2. Biomechanics
A combination of two words “Bio” & “Mechanics”
Bio – means – Living Organisms
Mechanics – is a branch of Physics which deals with the motion and causes of
motion
Actual application of laws and principles of physics in to the systems/body
Definition of Biomechanics
“Biomechanics refer to the application of Mechanical principles and laws to
the living structures or biological properties specifically to the loco-motor system
of the living body”
3. Sports Biomechanics
“ Sports Biomechanics refer to the application of Mechanical principles and laws
to the field of sports or athletes specifically to improve performance of athletes”
4.
5. Mechanics
Have two branches –
Kinetics – which deals with the cause of motion
Why ?
Eg . Force , pressure , impact, Gravity etc
Kinematics – deals the description of motion in terms of time, displacement ,
speed , etc
How ?
Eg. How long ,how much speed etc
6. Division of Kinetics and Kinematics
Static and Dynamics are the two branches of both kinetics and kinematics
STATICS – applied on a body at REST phase
DYNAMICS – applied on a body at MOTION phase
REST – if there is no changes in the size , shape, posture , position etc of body
are called as movement
MOVEMENT – Any changes occurring in the size , shape, posture , position etc
of body are called as movement
8. Goals of Sports Biomechanics
Performance improvement
Technique improvement
Movement Quality improvement
Equipment improvement
Injury prevention and Rehabilitation
Reduce the chance of injury by developing equipment
Technical correction
Concepts of force transfer
