2. Professional Drivers (PDs) Safety
o Professional drivers:
o Truck drivers, Bus drivers, Taxi drivers, Delivery drivers
(van, car, motorcycles, other), Ambulance drivers
o Risk factors:
o Involving trucks and buses have often serious
consequences: lead to around 16% of road fatalities in
the EU (ERSO, 2023)
o Prone to fatigue and distraction as well as to health
conditions that might affect safe driving, e.g. sleep
apnoea.
o But also… alcohol, drugs (e.g. benzodiazepine)…
3. How can technology help improving safety of PDs?
OFF-ROAD Fitness-to-
Drive
ON-ROAD Fitness-to-
Drive
Off-duty, lifestyle
and recuperation/ pre-
driving shift-phases.
Sleeping, eating, drinking
…
• In-vehicle real time monitoring of
driver behaviour, e.g. fatigue,
distraction, speed
• Real-time feedback (e.g. warning)
• Alcolock
4. o Holistic pre-, during and
roadside monitoring and
assessment system of driving
ability
o Assess physical, cognitive,
and physiological Fitness-to-
Drive (commercial drivers)
o Cloud-based
countermeasures and
coaching tool deploys
solutions to driver & fleet
operators
PANACEA Project Approach
6. Example: Fatigue management - 1
Before and During the Shift
• If high fatigue level is predicted, the
driver is notified.
• To highlight consequences of a
behaviour (e.g. lack of sleeping).
• A notification is also sento to the
operator.
• If a critical level is detected, the
driver is notified.
• To provide a feedback to the driver.
• A notification is also sento to the
operator.
Fatigue
Prediction
Fatigue Alert
7. Example: Fatigue management - 2
After the Shift
Fatigue Report
• At the conclusion of each shift, the
driver can review their performance.
• To provide feedback in terms of poor
driving behavior and recognition of
good behavior.
• The report can be shared with the
operator.
• A self-assessment is
proposed under certain
conditions.
• To improve understanding
what triggers unwanted
behavior.
• The answers can be shared
with the operator.
Fatigue
Questionnaire

The Operator countermeasures
Fatigue Debriefing
Operator Dashboard
• Based on driver’s fatigue risk level a debriefing session could
be recommended.
• After the session, the operator fills in a short questionnaire
to evaluate the main factors of the driver’s fatigue and make
notes on their state.
• To provide support or encouragement for performing the
target behavior
