The History of Major Earthquakes Around World Essay
The term earthquake comes from the Greek term for shaking. An earthquake is a visible rip across
the Earth s surface due to a release of energy and stored stress in the Earth s crust and causes
seismic waves. Earthquakes have been around since the time of the earliest civilizations.
Earthquakes used to be compared to the unrest of spiritual beings. Specifically, Aristotle and the
Ancient Greeks stated that earthquakes were the result of the underground winds . The earliest
earthquakes were recorded by seismometers which calculate the waves generated by each
earthquake. The original seismometer was the Wood Anderson seismometer. When an earthquake

The plates are in constant motion. Where they interact, along their margins, important geological
processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes (Spall 1).
Plate tectonics are one of the most influential factors of earthquakes. When tectonic plates slide past
each other an earthquake occurs. Typical plate tectonics move at about the same rate your
fingernail grows. The process is extremely slow before the plate moves significantly enough to
cause an earth quake but it does happen. These tectonic plates are on the fault lines which are
considered earthquake hot spots.
Earthquakes typically occur in relation to other earthquakes. After shocks that follow earthquakes,
typically occur around the same fault break as the original earthquake or can occur on nearby fault
lines as well. Earthquakes can also be triggers for future earthquakes occurring on the same fault
line or neighboring fault lines anytime from seconds to years after the orginal mainshock. In recent
decades, scientists have learned that faults and earthquakes communicate with one another in far
more diverse and interesting ways than the classic foreshock mainshock aftershock (Hough 1).
A specific type of catastrophic earthquake that comes to mind is a tsunami. A tsunami is considered
an undersea earthquake. Tsunamis are caused

The Internet And Its Impact On Our Lives Essay
According to History.com, in 1965, ARPAnet, also known today as the Internet, was invented for
military purposes. However, Tim Berners Lee had a different intention for ARPAnet. He invented
the worldwide web where information was accessible for anyone.
Centuries ago, to impart knowledge or information from the past and pass it from one person to
another, books were created. To obtain it, they had to go to a library, read tons of books about a
certain topic, jotted down and remembered the details they need. Today, all you need is an internet
access and you could have an enormous amount of data at your fingertips in an object that was
manufactured with the same size as a brick. Libraries were mainly used to obtain a physical
evidence of a documentation needed for research, studies, papers or projects. As stated in
History.com, for 56 years, the Internet had evolved. It became an ultimate tool in our daily
lives. However, nothing comes without a price. Nicholas Carr, an author of the article Is Google
Making Us Stupid? , published in The Atlantic as to how the Internet, specifically google, is
changing the way we read and the way we interact with reading materials. On the other hand, John
Battelle, an author, and a journalist, wrote a polemical article entitled Google: Making Nick Carr,
But It s Made This Guy Smarter published his response to Carr in his own blog. Battelle said that

George Boole and Boolean Logic
If you own a computer, tablet, or smartphone, you already use the contributions of George Boole to
the worlds of technology and mathematics. Boole, an Englishman, was an intellectual who was
interested in many fields including poetry, languages, science, and metaphysics. However, it was
his interest in mathematics that drove him to pursue knowledge in many areas of the subject, and
he went on to write numerous papers and volumes on a variety of mathematic topics. Boole s
determination to find a way use algebra to manipulate and solve logical problems led to his greatest
contribution to society, Boolean logic, and set the stage for explosion of ... Show more content on

On his website, Luke Mastin explains, Boole began to see the possibilities for applying his
algebra to the solution of logical problems...determined to find a way to encode logical
arguments into a language that could be manipulated and solved mathematically, he came up
with a type of linguistic algebra, now known as Boolean algebra (Mastin). Boole devised a
simplified system assigning symbols and connectives (such as AND, OR, and NOT) to
statements comparing sets of things or ideas. He used a binary system that processed two
objects (i.e. true and false ) that can be applied to any logic statement. This logic system was
later used in computer programming (by assigning a 1 for true and a 0 for false, for example) and
in electrical circuitry (Mastin). Boole wrote and published many academic documents and papers
including On a general method of analysis, in 1843, and Mathematical Analysis of Logic in 1847.
However, his most important work, and one that defines his legacy, was his An investigation into
the Laws of Thought, on Which are founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities,
published in 1854, in which he explained the ideas that would become Boolean algebra (O Connor
and Robertson). The concepts that Boole developed and illustrated in his documents laid the
foundation for computer programming and contributed to the explosion of technological advances
that have happened since. Boolean logic is the basis for almost anything that is

being spiny , with scales . Furthermore, Catherine wrestles with the animal identity. Keeping us
from knowing what the animal actually is, but she described it well enough to capture an image
of it in your mind. To me I believe she did it on purpose to keep the audience, the reader s

animal is whatever you image it to be.
In the poem Dear Day Catherine used many different types of metaphors. One was to describe
how fast she and the mythical animal would fly through the forests as if they re bullets as quoted,

From previous experiences with baking cookies we are aware that if you accidentally use baking

accurate because no measurement is precise so Byars cookie compared to ours will be different.

Errors that could not be eliminated includes the fact that measurements are not precise, and the

it would land at an airport. The plane landed on a slush covered filled after it had snowed at the

There the planesat at a gate and at around 0200 hours on 27 December, 1991, a flight technician
had finished inspecting the airplane and had noted that ice had formed on upper portion of the
wings.
By morning it was noted by a technician at 0730 hours that frost was found on the underside of
the wing, but after inspection of the upper wing he could not see any ice formed on it. It would
later be found out that there was indeed ice on it, but not a kind that is completely visible, and the
ice that was found on the wing was in fact clear ice. The reason this ice likely formed on the wing
was due to fuel being left in the wings overnight where the temperature within it was 20В° C.
Alongside that it had snowed overnight while the plane sat, which made ice and slush build up on

Addison s Disease
A disorder that takes place when your body produces an insufficient amount of certain hormones
that are produced by the adrenal glands is called Addison s disease. With Addison s disease, the
adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol and often times an insufficient amount of aldosterone
as well. Doctors sometimes refer to Addison s disease as the illness of chronic adrenal insufficiency,
or also called hypocortisolism. In 1855, Thomas Addison first described adrenal insufficiency,
which was subsequently named after him. The basis of Addison disease has dramatically changed

A person should visit their doctor for the diagnosis of this disease if they have severe fatigue,
muscle or joint pains, salt cravings, unintentional weight loss, and gastrointestinal problems, such
as vomiting and abdominal pain and nausea. The cause of Addison s disease is the result of the
adrenal glands being damaged and producing insufficient amounts of cortisol and aldosterone as
well. The adrenal glands are located just above the kidneys. Being part of the endocrine system,
the adrenal glands produce hormones that give instructions to almost every organ and tissue in the
body. The adrenal glands are made up of two different sections. The interior (medulla) which
produces hormones similar to adrenaline. The (cortex) outer layer has the role of producing a
group of hormones that are called corticosteroids; these include mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids
and the male sex hormones known as (androgens). Addison s disease takes place when the cortex is
damaged and does not produce hormones in adequate quantities. Doctors often refer to this
condition that involves damage to the adrenal glands as a primary adrenal insufficiency. When the
adrenal glands fail to produce adrenocortical hormones it is commonly a result of an autoimmune
disease where the body is attacking itself. For an unknown reason the immune system sometimes

History Of The Confederate Flag
Chase Jones
History of the confederate flag
In the past couple of year, there has been a controversial battle over the flying of the Confederate
Flag on government buildings. The controversy has really started to stir up in the southern states
such as South Carolina, Mississippi, and Georgia. On January 30, 2001, the state of Georgia
changed its flag, removing the large Confederate battle cross from the 1956 design and replacing
it with the state seal of Georgia. Now, the state of Mississippi is the only state that fearlessly
displays the Southern Cross in its state flag. Though several Southerners see the Confederate Flag
as a symbol of southern pride and heritage, many others see the flag as a dishonorable reminder of
slavery and segregation in the south. Although this flag is under great controversy in the southern

There are environmental factors impact the spread of infectious diseases, and the main aspects
are water supply, hygiene services, food, and climate. An absence of safe water, a lack of
sanitation facilities, loss of living situations, and insecure food would cause suffering or
possible death. Instances of epidemics are Obesity, HIV, Cholera, and Malaria (Peterson, 2002).
Malaria is caused by parasites, which are organisms live on or in a host, and get food from the
same host, and the main affection come along by mosquitoes. Additionally, not all type of
mosquitoes can cause that transfer of bugs to people of bite them. Only one type of female
mosquitoes called Anopheles mosquitoes, which transmit parasite called Plasmodium from
infected people due to blood needed to grow their eggs (WHO, 2015). These parasites live and
grow inside the mosquito s salivary glands. Moreover, when a mosquito goes for the next bite, the
parasite injected into another human blood as a second host. The growth of the parasite multiply
quickly at the infected human liver, and then moved back to the red blood cells. In a short period,
approximate one or two weeks some of the malaria symptoms are starting to illustrate like vomiting,
headache, and fever. At that situation, patients should be treated rapidly with actual medicines, or
that massive spread of the parasites can destroy the red blood cells, which cause blocking the

Benefits And Limitations Of Renewable Energy Sources
In the world that we live, the prospects for renewable energy will increase in the European union
as a whole, and in the UK in particular, in the coming decades. Renewable energy sources are
already providing a significant proportion of the world s primary energy, and it is likely to be
providing a much greater proportion of the world s energy by the second half of the 21th century.
The European Union countries may do something to increase 20% of all energy from Renewable
sources by 2020 to the society. This essay will outline the benefits and limitations of two common

of the fundamental principles for policy in the 21st century. The politicians, industrialists,

seek international, national, and local cooperation. However, reaching specific agreed policies and

In the international context, the word progress relate to amendment in quality of life, including
improving standards of living in less developed countries. The aim of sustainable development is
to achieve this aim while safeguarding the ecological processes upon which life depends. Locally,
progressive businesses seek a positive treble under line, (a positive offering to the economic,
social, and environmental well being of the community). We know that many changes in social
patterns are related to energy supplies. We may expect further changes to occur as renewable
energy systems become even more widespread. The influence of modern science and technology
ensures that there are considerable improvements to older technologies, and subsequently standards
of living can be expected to rise, especially in rural and previously less developed

Only the gold and silver flowed now, not from the coffers of the king, but from the purses of men
who had made, say a fortune from industry, and returned, in their wills, a bounteous share of it to
endow more chairs, more lectureships, more fellowships in the university where they had learnt

making a point about universities and the funding that they received from men that had gone to
school there. Woolf s essay takes place during the early nineteen hundreds when most women did

Thankfully times have changed, and women writers are recognized equally as men are today in
society. The main reason is that women today have an equal chance at education. Education today
is open to everyone, because education can be paid for, or funded in various ways.
Universities today are much easier to attend for anyone that wishes to go to school. There are so
many different types of programs out there today that make education more affordable for
people that do not have the assets to pay for an education themselves. There are many forms of
financial aid available for specific groups of people. For example, there are scholarship programs
set up specifically for women, or programs set up specifically for minorities. There are also
programs set up for people with certain disabilities. These programs are set up in this sort of way
to give everyone a chance to fit in to one of the specific categories. There are many ways to apply

Bullying from a boss/employer comes from the established fact that they have power over their
employee as 81% of bullies are managers (Weinstein, viewed 18 August 2015). However, it is
when this power is abused that bullying is found. Workplace bullying is easily considered

Albatross Anchors usually do small batch production order due to plant antiquation and safety
issues. With the limited manufacturing area and warehouse space the limited space to store raw
materials is costing the company more money to produce the anchors. The time frame of production
of order is very important to the retailers the less time to produce the more units can be produced to
increase the production and bring down the cost of production. Speed in production is the new
competitive edge in production as quick as the order is placed by the customer; the customer is
expecting the manufacture to have it delivered to them. The way a manufacturing company can
meet the challenge of speed by employing the tools and techniques that produce speed in design
production and delivery tools like rapid prototyping, concurrent engineering, simulation and 3D
modeling, build to order through lean and agile manufacturing, Six Sigma, outsourcing, third party
logistics, cross docking. Companies must use them efficiently and effectively in order to gain a
competitive advantage (Tompkins, 2002). The company must make technology changes it is the
way of the future. Must understand the process of satisfying the customer and using effective
communication in order to achieve and maintain speed, and continue through the supply chain to
the customer and the supply chain to the suppliers with continuous flow of communication. 3.

The Flat Tax System
Taxes are something the people of America have had an issue with since the very creation of this
nation, and it is one of the main reasons the Revolutionary War was fought. The issue of taxes has
morphed over time, and in our current time period, people are debating which tax system should be
implemented. Even though this is a broad topic and a national issue, this paper will only cover the
income taxversion of these systems, and which income taxsystem would be most beneficial to the
state of Texasspecifically. Currently, there are three main types of income tax systems, and they are
the progressive income tax system, the flat income tax system, and the no income tax system. By

Also, if the government wanted to raise more revenue through raising income taxes, and there
was a flat income tax system in place, they would have to raise the income taxes for everyone
across the board. Now, let s look back the example from earlier where person one made $50,000
and person two made $100,000. Remember, they both payed the same percentage of their
income in taxes, which was 10%: person one payed $5,000, person two payed $10,000. Some
people will say that this way of taxation is unfair because the $5,000 means more to person one
than the $10,000 means to person two. Regardless of whether the $5,000 means more to person
one than the $10,000 means to person two is true or not, they are being treated fairly because
they are both paying the same percentage of their income. The flat tax has good points like its
simplicity and ability to stimulate an economy, but it also has weaknesses like its inability to be
flexible after implementation and the possibility of putting even more of a tax burden on lower
income families. Let s move on to the third and final tax system to be covered which is no income

Individualistic Government By Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau believes that in a government that is ruled by the majority vote, or the
majority rule, the government itself is answering to the requests of the strongest group, and in most
cases, the strongest group is not the group with the best intentions, in terms of virtue or thoughts.
Thoreau describes the majority[of the governed] ... [are not] most likely to be right... but they are
physically the strongest. He believes that the majority have their requests answered due to their
strength. Shortly after, he discusses the idea of a governmentruling by conscience and not through
their own decisions of right and wrong. Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree,
resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience then? I think that we
should be men first, and subjects afterwards. Thoreau debates the idea of following what we believe
is right, through our conscience, rather than blindly following the law. I agree with Thoreau in this
aspect, why should we blindly follow rules that we know are morally unjust? Thoreau begins his
piece of literature with his accepted motto, That government is best which governs least. There is a
term called individualistic culture , which is defined to mean a culture that looks to government to
maintain a stable society but with minimum intervention in the lives of the people. Thoreau
believes that the best kind of government is the kind that governs the least number of people,

Red Kayak Narrative
What would you do if you found out that your friends had committed a crime that caused a boy s
death? Would you turn them in even if you were slightly involved in the crime? Well that is the
predicament that the main character in Red Kayak faces. The major plot events in Red Kayak go
like this: Mrs. DiAngelo and her son Ben were in a kayaking accident, and Ben dies as a result,
leaving Brady, the main character, traumatized. Later, Brady finds out that his two friends, J.T.
and Digger caused the kayak to sink. Brady also remembers a day when the three of them were
swimming and Digger was acting angry at the DiAngelos for buying his grandfather s farm.
Brady had suggested to put holes in the kayak, so now Brady has to decide what to do because the
plan to sink the kayak was his idea. Things like this make Red Kayak a good example of realistic
fiction. Realistic fiction is a type of story that might really happen. The five elements of realistic
fiction are: credible events, authentic characters, real setting, true to life themes, and believable
dialogue. Credible events are events that could really happen. Authentic characters are characters
that develop over time. Real setting shows a setting that could really exist. True to life themes are
themes that could be applied to one s own life. And finally, believable dialogue contains realistic
conversations. Red Kayak is realistic fiction because of its credible events, authentic characters, and
true to life themes.
A reason why Red Kayak is considered realistic fiction is because of its credible events. One
credible event in Red Kayak is that Ben died because of being in a cold river for too long. On
pages 49 50, Brady s mom tells Brady Ben died... Brady responds by asking why did he die? Brady
s mom then says I don t know... I guess because he was in that cold water for so long. This is a
credible event because people do die at young ages like this. Not everyone can live a full life. In
short, Ben dying is a credible event because people do die in the real world.
Another way Red Kayak is an example of realistic fiction is because of its authentic characters. An
authentic character in Red Kayak is Digger. Something that support this is on page 107. Brady

IV. Choiceand Rationale
After reviewing all of the possible choices I chose to go with choice A. I chose A, because it
saves Pacific Healthcare a lot of money as discussed in choice C. By choosing DuPont the
company would save $450 a day compared to Kodak. That is $3,150 per week of savings and
$12,600 a month by switching to DuPont. Also in choosing Agfa which is the same quality as
Kodak, Pacific Healthcare would save $330. Keep in mind that Agfa and DuPont have the same
quality as Kodak. Why choose Agfa over DuPont if they have the same quality of X ray film?
That is why I chose DuPont. It is a smart solution, because it saves Pacific Healthcare money
while also keeping the same quality as Kodak. Moving on two the other choices Mr. Rubble has.
In the beginning I mentioned that there were four competitors that offered X ray films at a much
lower rate than Kodak. The competitors were Agfa, DuPont, Fugi, and 3M. I have discussed Agfa
and DuPont. The reason for not adding Fugi and 3M to my possible solutions is because Pacific
Health care wanted to keep the same high quality in X ray film. Even though Fugi and 3M met
minimum requirement they were thought of as having lower quality. Pacific Healthcare was

However, it is extremely difficult to send a human being into space. The space shuttle, which ferried
astronauts from earth to the International Space Station cost, on average, $1.5 billion dollars for
each of the 135 launches (Pielke Jr. 2007). Furthermore, the space shuttle had an operational
altitude of less than 600 miles, with the typical flight only reaching altitudes of around 250 miles
(Jenkins 2006); for missions beyond the International Space Station, the distance several orders of
magnitude greater. On average, it is 238,900 miles to reach the moon, and 140 million miles to
reach Mars (http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/profile.cfm). The sheer amount of resources
required to send a person into space makes it exceptionally difficult and costly to do so.
Consequently, it becomes critical that the astronauts well being is accounted for when being sent
on long term missions, both from an ethical and financial perspective. This paper will address some
of the hazards and health concerns that arise due to long term space travel for human beings.

About 50% of astronauts experience mild to severe motion sickness upon entering space; this
condition is referred as Space Adaptation Syndrome. Though it was initially thought of as a result of

The Pros And Cons Of Women
Working outside of the home was rare for women at a time and was wrong if it was done.
Women that did work outside of the home were not taken seriously being seen as less intelligent
than men and less able to cope with stress (Harrington 16). They were physically and
intellectually inferior so women weren t usually allowed to face the outside world (Collins 4 5).
Women were told if they worked, they would be taking jobs away from men that needed to
support their families, but in reality most women who worked did so to support their families as
well (Harrington 17 18). The unemployment rates surpassed men s 4.7% to 2.8% in the 1960s
(Ward 101). It was thought that women had no real ambition to work (Harrington 16). Though it
wasn t typical for a women to work, it was said the poor and single women should work until
they were married (Chafe 21). Even then it was a stretch for a woman to work considering
single women were seen as prey in the workplace (Nies 15). The usual jobs women were stuck
into were teachers, nurses, and secretaries (Kesselman 31). Even if qualified, women couldn t
work high level federal jobs (Nies 46). A lot of the time, women wouldn t even receive credit for
the jobs they did (Povich 78). Not only were women stuck in jobs they didn t enjoy, but they were

The Stele Of Naram-Sin Sne Analysis
In my essay, I will compare and contrast two historical pieces. The first one is the Victory Stele
of Naram Sin. The stele was made by the Mesopotamian empire during the Akkadian period,
which was from 2254 to 2218 BCE. It was founded in Susa, present day Shush, Iran. The second

victory. The composition is an important part of the art. In both pieces, the eyes move from the top

in the piece. In the Victory Stele of Naram Sin, the eye goes straight to the top. The stone slab has a

The Fives System
The FiveS system, also known as the 5S, is a organization system created at first for production
systems and then adapted by western managers for the workplace. Hiroyuki Hirano developed
the system in Japan and it is believed it lead to the very popular Just in time (JIT) manufacturing.
For example, major brands like Toyota have been using this system successfully for years. 5S is
based on the phrase a place for everything and everything in its place. (Byrne) Meaning that the
workplace should have everything you need, when you need it. In the workplace, it is believed
that the environment is key into the employee s behaviors. For example, if your mind is clear and
you don t have any worries, you will think and work more efficiently... Show more content on

In my experience as a student, I learned that organization and order are essential for me to
achieve my goals and getting everything done on time. Without a clean organized desk, I can t
do my assignments as fast and efficient as I would if it was. That is because I will waste time
cleaning and finding resources and also I will be paying attention to other things that I shouldn
t. In any organization, the principle is the same because we have the same human behavior.
Based on that, it is clear that implementing the 5S system is very positive for organizations and it
is a key concept in organizational behavior. Pillars The FiveS system is based on five pillars
mentioned above. It is important to know that the system is cyclical, meaning every step follows
another and has to be done in the right order for it to work. Figure 1 shows a good diagram of
how the system works and how the last S, sustain, makes sure that the steps keep going and
improving. If done correctly, it should result in continuous improvement of the organization s
workplace. The first pillar, called Sort, relates to elimination of everything in the workplace that is
unnecessary to the employee s tasks. This will create opening of workspace that could be used
better, as well as eliminate unnecessary or broken tools that would slow down employee tasks.
There are several methods to achieve this, the most popular being red tagging . This method
involves sorting through the items in the

The Battle Of The War On France
The Hundred Years War was fought between the armies of England and France beginning in 1337
CE, and eventually leading to a French victory in 1453. The war had a number of consequences,
from England losing the vast majority of its territories in mainland Europe to significantly
advancing European military technology. The origins of the conflict were in a dispute between the
English and the French over the French throne. After Charles IV of Francedied in 1328, leaving no
male heir behind, he passed the throne to his cousin, Philip of Valois, who was crowned Philip
VI. However, many English believed their young king Edward III had the right to the crown, as
his mother Isabella was Charles s sister. The other cause of the war was the argument between
both sides over Guyenne, a territory that the English had held in France for many years, and which
was very valuable and profitable for the English. Edward III declared war on France because of the
strategic value of Guyenne and to distract the French from Scotland, rather than his personal desire
for the throne.
The French claim to their own throne was largely based on their decision that the crown should
not be passed down to a woman. First of all, there had never previously been any queens of
France, because until then every French ruler had left a male heir behind. In 1316, following the
death of Louis X of France and his infant son John I, there were no more male heirs left, and there
was a question over who would inherit the

Countrywide Financial Crisis
Countrywide Financial, co founded in 1969 by Angelo Mozilo and David Loeb became the
largest provider of home loans in the U.S., where one out of every six loans originated with
Countrywide (Olster, 2010). Countrywide found its niche providing loans to minorities, those with
less than stellar credit, and by issuing loans to low income families. Numerous families, unable to
achieve the American dream, had the capability of becoming home owners, because Countrywide
diminished the barriers preventing this group from obtaining home ownership (Ferrell, Fraedrich,
Ferrell, 2013). House America and We House America were two programs created at Countrywide
to assist low income and minority individuals with home ownership by offering lower... Show more

Bank of America, under the impression they had made an excellent business decision was unaware
of the totality involving Countrywide s loan practices. Only a small group of Bank of America s
employees were involved in the assessment of Countrywide s books and operations techniques, yet
had no input in the acquisition (Rothacker, 2014). Only a matter of time, Bank of America would
realize the magnitude of legal issues it had acquired from Countrywide. However, Bank of America,
which was much larger, had the ability to manage the negative media and confront the rising legal
troubles better than Countrywide. Ironically, in 2001, Bank of America discontinued subprime
mortgages and higher priced loans to riskier consumers (Rothacker,

Literary Works Of The Harlem Renaissance
As a young girl in Portland, Ore., RenГ©e Watson immersed herself in the words of Langston
Hughes, discovering that his poems about black identity mirrored experiences in her own life.
Since moving to Harlem more than a decade ago, she has often walked by his old home a three
story brownstone on East 127th Street with cast iron railings and overgrown ivy.
The author spent his final 20 years, and wrote some of the most notable literary works of the
Harlem Renaissance, in this house. It was designated a historic landmark in 1981. Yet in recent
years, the property has remained empty. A performance space opened in 2007 but closed when the
tenants were evicted about a year later. In 2010, the current owner listed the house for $1 million
but found no buyers.
With her neighborhood experiencing rapid gentrification, Ms. Watson, 38, an author and poet, felt
that too many crucial landmarks of the Harlem Renaissance, like Mr. Hughes s home, were
disappearing or going unnoticed.
It feels like, whether it s intentional or not, our stories are being erased, Ms. Watson said.
So, after a year s worth of planning, she began to preserve the legacy of the house herself. She
began a nonprofit organization, persuaded the owner to let her lease and renovate the brownstone,
and started raising the money necessary to do so.
If she can successfully open Mr. Hughes s home and maintain it as a public space, it would be a
notable feat, especially in New York City, some preservationists say.

Summary Between Lord Of The Glies And Lord Of The Flies
Early man set up civilizations so future generations could live in peace and survive in their
surroundings. As early man developed civilizations, they contained five characteristics. Three of
the five are complex institutions, specialized workers, and record keeping. Complex institutions
are organizations like government and religious organizations. Specialized workers are people
like teachers, soldiers, and priests. Finally, cuneiform tablets were used in record keeping to
keep track of rules and trade. The characters in Lord of the Flies mirror early man s development
through complex institutions, specialized workers and record keeping. The boys in the novel
Lord of the Flies mirror the development of early man through complex institutions when they
appoint a chief. In the historical fiction novel, Clan of the Cave Bear, the text reads, the leader of
the small clan... (Auel 12). In the Lord of the Flies, after being called to the beach by the conch,
the boys vote for a chief to lead the mass of boys on the island similar to the early man leader
portrayed in Clan of the Cave Bear (Golding 22). The connection between these texts
demonstrates that the boys are going through the same development phase as early man did. In
both Lord of the Flies, and Clan of the Cave Bear, there is a chief, and even more, a complex
institution similar to a government. Now that a government has been formed, there will be workers
and a way to keep track of events. The boys in the novel

Where they interact, along their margins, important geological processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes (Spall 1). Typical plate tectonics move at about the same rate your fingernail grows. The process is extremely slow before the plate moves significantly enough to cause an earth quake but it does happen. These tectonic plates are on the fault lines which are considered earthquake hot spots. Earthquakes typically occur in relation to other earthquakes. After shocks that follow earthquakes, typically occur around the same fault break as the original earthquake or can occur on nearby fault lines as well. Earthquakes can also be triggers for future earthquakes occurring on the same fault line or neighboring fault lines anytime from seconds to years after the orginal mainshock. • 7. The Internet And Its Impact On Our Lives Essay According to History.com, in 1965, ARPAnet, also known today as the Internet, was invented for military purposes. However, Tim Berners Lee had a different intention for ARPAnet. He invented the worldwide web where information was accessible for anyone. Centuries ago, to impart knowledge or information from the past and pass it from one person to another, books were created. To obtain it, they had to go to a library, read tons of books about a certain topic, jotted down and remembered the details they need. Today, all you need is an internet access and you could have an enormous amount of data at your fingertips in an object that was manufactured with the same size as a brick. Libraries were mainly used to obtain a physical evidence of a documentation needed for research, studies, papers or projects. As stated in History.com, for 56 years, the Internet had evolved. It became an ultimate tool in our daily lives. However, nothing comes without a price. Nicholas Carr, an author of the article Is Google Making Us Stupid? , published in The Atlantic as to how the Internet, specifically google, is changing the way we read and the way we interact with reading materials. On the other hand, John Battelle, an author, and a journalist, wrote a polemical article entitled Google: Making Nick Carr, But It s Made This Guy Smarter published his response to Carr in his own blog. Boole, an Englishman, was an intellectual who was interested in many fields including poetry, languages, science, and metaphysics. However, it was his interest in mathematics that drove him to pursue knowledge in many areas of the subject, and he went on to write numerous papers and volumes on a variety of mathematic topics. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On his website, Luke Mastin explains, Boole began to see the possibilities for applying his algebra to the solution of logical problems...determined to find a way to encode logical arguments into a language that could be manipulated and solved mathematically, he came up with a type of linguistic algebra, now known as Boolean algebra (Mastin). Boole devised a simplified system assigning symbols and connectives (such as AND, OR, and NOT) to statements comparing sets of things or ideas. He used a binary system that processed two objects (i.e. true and false ) that can be applied to any logic statement. This logic system was later used in computer programming (by assigning a 1 for true and a 0 for false, for example) and in electrical circuitry (Mastin). Boole wrote and published many academic documents and papers including On a general method of analysis, in 1843, and Mathematical Analysis of Logic in 1847. However, his most important work, and one that defines his legacy, was his An investigation into the Laws of Thought, on Which are founded the Mathematical Theories of Logic and Probabilities, published in 1854, in which he explained the ideas that would become Boolean algebra (O Connor and Robertson). The concepts that Boole developed and illustrated in his documents laid the foundation for computer programming and contributed to the explosion of technological advances that have happened since. History Of The Confederate Flag Chase Jones History of the confederate flag In the past couple of year, there has been a controversial battle over the flying of the Confederate Flag on government buildings. The controversy has really started to stir up in the southern states such as South Carolina, Mississippi, and Georgia. On January 30, 2001, the state of Georgia changed its flag, removing the large Confederate battle cross from the 1956 design and replacing it with the state seal of Georgia. Now, the state of Mississippi is the only state that fearlessly displays the Southern Cross in its state flag. Though several Southerners see the Confederate Flag as a symbol of southern pride and heritage, many others see the flag as a dishonorable reminder of slavery and segregation in the south. Although this flag is under great controversy in the southern states, there is no reason why this flag should not be flown from government buildings because it isn t demoralizing African Americans in the symbolization of slavery, segregation and domination although it is used by many hate groups across the united states they too need a history lesson because the confederate flag only started as a battle flag that some blacks fought under and held with pride. The Confederate Flag is a demoralizing symbol to many African Americans in the United States. Also, if the government wanted to raise more revenue through raising income taxes, and there was a flat income tax system in place, they would have to raise the income taxes for everyone across the board. Now, let s look back the example from earlier where person one made $50,000 and person two made $100,000. Remember, they both payed the same percentage of their income in taxes, which was 10%: person one payed $5,000, person two payed $10,000. Some people will say that this way of taxation is unfair because the $5,000 means more to person one than the $10,000 means to person two. Regardless of whether the $5,000 means more to person one than the $10,000 means to person two is true or not, they are being treated fairly because they are both paying the same percentage of their income. The flat tax has good points like its simplicity and ability to stimulate an economy, but it also has weaknesses like its inability to be flexible after implementation and the possibility of putting even more of a tax burden on lower income families. • 31. Individualistic Government By Henry David Thoreau Henry David Thoreau believes that in a government that is ruled by the majority vote, or the majority rule, the government itself is answering to the requests of the strongest group, and in most cases, the strongest group is not the group with the best intentions, in terms of virtue or thoughts. Thoreau describes the majority[of the governed] ... [are not] most likely to be right... but they are physically the strongest. He believes that the majority have their requests answered due to their strength. Shortly after, he discusses the idea of a governmentruling by conscience and not through their own decisions of right and wrong. Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterwards. Thoreau debates the idea of following what we believe is right, through our conscience, rather than blindly following the law. I agree with Thoreau in this aspect, why should we blindly follow rules that we know are morally unjust? Thoreau begins his piece of literature with his accepted motto, That government is best which governs least. There is a term called individualistic culture , which is defined to mean a culture that looks to government to maintain a stable society but with minimum intervention in the lives of the people. Thoreau believes that the best kind of government is the kind that governs the least number of people, supporting this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Red Kayak Narrative What would you do if you found out that your friends had committed a crime that caused a boy s death? Would you turn them in even if you were slightly involved in the crime? Well that is the predicament that the main character in Red Kayak faces. The major plot events in Red Kayak go like this: Mrs. DiAngelo and her son Ben were in a kayaking accident, and Ben dies as a result, leaving Brady, the main character, traumatized. Later, Brady finds out that his two friends, J.T. and Digger caused the kayak to sink. Brady also remembers a day when the three of them were swimming and Digger was acting angry at the DiAngelos for buying his grandfather s farm. Brady had suggested to put holes in the kayak, so now Brady has to decide what to do because the plan to sink the kayak was his idea. Things like this make Red Kayak a good example of realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a type of story that might really happen. The five elements of realistic fiction are: credible events, authentic characters, real setting, true to life themes, and believable dialogue. Credible events are events that could really happen. Authentic characters are characters that develop over time. Real setting shows a setting that could really exist. True to life themes are themes that could be applied to one s own life. And finally, believable dialogue contains realistic conversations. Red Kayak is realistic fiction because of its credible events, authentic characters, and true to life themes. A reason why Red Kayak is considered realistic fiction is because of its credible events. One credible event in Red Kayak is that Ben died because of being in a cold river for too long. On pages 49 50, Brady s mom tells Brady Ben died... Brady responds by asking why did he die? Brady s mom then says I don t know... I guess because he was in that cold water for so long. This is a credible event because people do die at young ages like this. Not everyone can live a full life. In short, Ben dying is a credible event because people do die in the real world. Another way Red Kayak is an example of realistic fiction is because of its authentic characters. An authentic character in Red Kayak is Digger. Something that support this is on page 107. In my experience as a student, I learned that organization and order are essential for me to achieve my goals and getting everything done on time. Without a clean organized desk, I can t do my assignments as fast and efficient as I would if it was. That is because I will waste time cleaning and finding resources and also I will be paying attention to other things that I shouldn t. In any organization, the principle is the same because we have the same human behavior. Based on that, it is clear that implementing the 5S system is very positive for organizations and it is a key concept in organizational behavior. • 42. The Battle Of The War On France The Hundred Years War was fought between the armies of England and France beginning in 1337 CE, and eventually leading to a French victory in 1453. The war had a number of consequences, from England losing the vast majority of its territories in mainland Europe to significantly advancing European military technology. The origins of the conflict were in a dispute between the English and the French over the French throne. After Charles IV of Francedied in 1328, leaving no male heir behind, he passed the throne to his cousin, Philip of Valois, who was crowned Philip VI. However, many English believed their young king Edward III had the right to the crown, as his mother Isabella was Charles s sister. The other cause of the war was the argument between both sides over Guyenne, a territory that the English had held in France for many years, and which was very valuable and profitable for the English. Edward III declared war on France because of the strategic value of Guyenne and to distract the French from Scotland, rather than his personal desire for the throne. The French claim to their own throne was largely based on their decision that the crown should not be passed down to a woman. First of all, there had never previously been any queens of France, because until then every French ruler had left a male heir behind. In 1316, following the death of Louis X of France and his infant son John I, there were no more male heirs left, and there was a question over who would inherit the ... Countrywide Financial Crisis Countrywide Financial, co founded in 1969 by Angelo Mozilo and David Loeb became the largest provider of home loans in the U.S., where one out of every six loans originated with Countrywide (Olster, 2010). Countrywide found its niche providing loans to minorities, those with less than stellar credit, and by issuing loans to low income families. Numerous families, unable to achieve the American dream, had the capability of becoming home owners, because Countrywide diminished the barriers preventing this group from obtaining home ownership (Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2013). • 44. Literary Works Of The Harlem Renaissance As a young girl in Portland, Ore., RenГ©e Watson immersed herself in the words of Langston Hughes, discovering that his poems about black identity mirrored experiences in her own life. Since moving to Harlem more than a decade ago, she has often walked by his old home a three story brownstone on East 127th Street with cast iron railings and overgrown ivy. The author spent his final 20 years, and wrote some of the most notable literary works of the Harlem Renaissance, in this house. It was designated a historic landmark in 1981. Yet in recent years, the property has remained empty. A performance space opened in 2007 but closed when the tenants were evicted about a year later. In 2010, the current owner listed the house for $1 million but found no buyers. With her neighborhood experiencing rapid gentrification, Ms. Watson, 38, an author and poet, felt that too many crucial landmarks of the Harlem Renaissance, like Mr. Hughes s home, were disappearing or going unnoticed. It feels like, whether it s intentional or not, our stories are being erased, Ms. Watson said. So, after a year s worth of planning, she began to preserve the legacy of the house herself. She began a nonprofit organization, persuaded the owner to let her lease and renovate the brownstone, and started raising the money necessary to do so. If she can successfully open Mr. Hughes s home and maintain it as a public space, it would be a notable feat, especially in New York City, some preservationists say. ... • 45. Summary Between Lord Of The Glies And Lord Of The Flies Early man set up civilizations so future generations could live in peace and survive in their surroundings. As early man developed civilizations, they contained five characteristics. Three of the five are complex institutions, specialized workers, and record keeping. Complex institutions are organizations like government and religious organizations. Specialized workers are people like teachers, soldiers, and priests. Finally, cuneiform tablets were used in record keeping to keep track of rules and trade. The characters in Lord of the Flies mirror early man s development through complex institutions, specialized workers and record keeping. The boys in the novel Lord of the Flies mirror the development of early man through complex institutions when they appoint a chief. In the historical fiction novel, Clan of the Cave Bear, the text reads, the leader of the small clan... (Auel 12). In the Lord of the Flies, after being called to the beach by the conch, the boys vote for a chief to lead the mass of boys on the island similar to the early man leader portrayed in Clan of the Cave Bear (Golding 22). The connection between these texts demonstrates that the boys are going through the same development phase as early man did. In both Lord of the Flies, and Clan of the Cave Bear, there is a chief, and even more, a complex institution similar to a government. Now that a government has been formed, there will be workers and a way to keep track of events. The boys in the novel ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
