Literature Review Performance Management and the Balanced...
Chapter 2
Literature Review
Since the Balanced Scorecard was developed in the 1990 s by Robert Kaplan and David Norton
(1992), it has gained in popularity amongst academics and practitioners. In 1990, Kaplan and Norton
led a research study of a lot of companies with the purpose of exploring the new methods of
performance management. The importance of the study was an increasing belief that the financial
measures of performance management were not as effective as before with the development of
modern business enterprise. Representatives involved in the study companies, including the
researchers Kaplan and Norton, were persuaded that the reliance on financial measures of
performance had an effect on their ability to create value. After ... Show more content on

2003). Similar to Speckbacher et al. (2003), this study examines the structure of the BALANCED
SCORECARD as a whole. This study is however, unique in that it addresses both the structure and use
of the BALANCED SCORECARD. Kaplan amp; Norton (1992; 1996; 2001), the originators of the
balanced scorecard, emphasize that the inclusion of non financial measures is just one aspect of the
balanced scorecard, noting that there are several structural attributes that make it unique from other
frameworks, such as KPI (key performance indicator) cards and stakeholder cards. Kaplan amp;
Norton (1996, 2001) also suggest that its unique structure allows it to be used as a strategic tool to
steer organizations towards sustained long term profitability. They argue that simply including non
financial metrics in their performance measurement system is not enough for organizations to learn,
improve, and grow. If Kaplan and Norton s argument is correct, then companies with different levels
of BALANCED SCORECARD adoption should see different results. This suggests a need to compare
organizations that have different levels or numbers of balanced scorecard attributes to see if there are
any differences. As well, academic studies may be more comparable if a clearly defined Balanced
Scorecard was used. A clearly defined BALANCED SCORECARD would enable organizations and
researchers to assess the level of BALANCED SCORECARD adoption which may help to explain
some of the differences in

Music And Harmony In Music
According to Goodall, harmony is a word that borrowed by other language to show the well being,
human warm, agreement or friendliness. In music, harmony is the vertical of pitch with a part of
several pitches sounded at the same time. It unlike rhythm and melody as it was not part of music
from the beginning but it is an upstart. Harmony combined pitches into chords to please our ears.
Harmony is a magic compare to other elements of music. The tonal gravitational forces for harmony
are more complex and powerful than the melody. It contributes to the effect of the motion in music
and it allows the component to manipulate the human emotion. Besides, harmony is music coming
together with two or more sound to make effect and all around the world ... Show more content on

Drone is the constant note just like deum verum the drone just follows the melody and played parallel.
However, this system gradually disappeared and new system is beginning. For an example, Sumer is
icumen in has special drone worked independently from the tune. When there are two different notes
played one after another, it is the beginning of chord progression. Chord progression is the heart of
western harmony that the harmony does not stay static and it moves. Whenever the note in the melody
collides with the two supporting drone, three note chord is created and three note chord is the basic of
western harmony.
Furthermore, harmony also contributes to the structural design of music. The arrangement of melodic
lends itself to hierarchical design more noticeably than does harmony. This is because repetition of
patterned material more obvious in melody then it is in harmony. The pattern of frequency of vibration
that created within an instrument named as harmonics. According to the video of Goodall, when
plucking a string of harp, it vibrates at different frequencies, it may two or more different notes offer.
It is creating the hierarchical of notes and

Who Is St. Thomas Aquinas Determinants Of Natural Law
St. Thomas Aquinas interpreted Aristotle s philosophies to be read in a Christian lens. His view
demonstrates that moral obligations are determinants of a natural law, one that is acquired from each
individual s God given nature and is knowable by [all] (McBrayer Markie 2014, p. 241). Aquinas
emphasized morality being crucial for everyone, and that God s plans for his creations include being
good. Although, he knew that not everyone was informed of God s moral rules; so, he theorized that
God created the world in accordance to natural laws in which his creations have an innate sense of
knowing what is good for themselves. From our intuitive desires, some inclinations are natural, while
others are unnatural. According to Aquinas, the natural proclivities occur from eternal law, which
states that the whole community of the universe is governed by divine reason (McBrayer Markie
2014, p. 242), and sharing eternal reason for rational beings lead to natural law. ... Show more content

Therefore, natural laws are those that would exist, even if government did not. Natural law consists of
discerning what is good and what is evil (McBrayer Markie 2014, p. 242), such as the prohibition and
positive injunction aspects of a basic good. A basic good includes having a survival instinct to value
life, and a person can reason that others have valuable lives as well, so killing is a violation of natural
law. The prohibition in this scenario is to not kill, while the positive injunction is to promote life. This
natural inclination based on the basic good of life will enable a person to aid others and themselves,
through charities or healthy lifestyles. In contrast, not all virtuous acts are prescribed by natural law

Wilhelm Rontgen and the Nobel Prize Essay
Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was born on March 27, 1845 in Lennep, Prussia; which is now Remscheid,
Germany. His family moved to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, where we went to Institute of Martinus
Herman van Doorn, a boarding school. He did not show any special aptitude, but he had a fascination
with nature and loved roaming the countryside and walking through forests. Later he attended a
technical school in Utrecht, but unfortunately was unfairly expelled for allegedly drawing a rude
caricature of one of the teachers, which was in fact drawn by another student. He then entered the
University of Utrecht in 1865 to study physics. He did not have the required credentials to enter the
University, but he heard he could enter by passing an exam. He ... Show more content on

He named this new discovery X Ray because x is the term for an unknown number in mathematics. It
was later called Roentgen Rays although changed back to X Ray . With his new discovery, he found
that the rays would travel through human tissue, but leave a shadow of bone and metal behind. One of
his first experiments was on his wife Bertha s hand with a ring on her finger in 1895. Medical X rays
work by letting fast moving electrons come to a sudden stop on a metal plate. They show up different
on the radiograph because of different absorption rates of different material. The calcium in bones
absorb the most x rays so they appear white on a radiograph, or the film x rays are displayed on,
although other things like tissue, fat and skin absorb it less so they appear grey. Air absorbs the least x
rays so this is why lungs look completely black on a radiograph. Todays x ray machines are much
faster, more efficient and produce much less harmful radiation. Excessive exposure to x rays can be
dangerous but in modern medicine doctors are able to keep us safe with their knowledge on this. The
original x ray machine took 90 minutes and produced 1500 times the radiation as modern x rays.
Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen has made a huge impact on todays technology. It s obvious to see that
inventing the x ray is a big deal, but this was actually a very big accomplishment and made a lot of
new things possible. Without the x ray our ability in the medical world would be

An Analysis Of Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication Of The...
The Age of Enlightenment encouraged writers to break away from conventional thought and express
their ideas and opinions through reasoning. Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication of the Rights of
Women and Marquis de Sade s Philosophy in the Bedroom examine the conventional norms in their
respective author s contemporary societies. In both accounts, Wollstonecraft and Sade prescribe the
path humanity should take in order to improve the human condition. Marquis de Sade develops an
unconventional philosophy by claiming that cruelty is nature s most basic quality. He supports the idea
that humans are born with the notion of cruelty and thus, should embrace their destructive instincts.
According to him, might is right because in the state of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, she focuses on the importance and value of education, believing that the most perfect
education...is such an exercise of the understanding as is best calculated to strengthen the body and
form the heart (Wollstonecraft 134). Like her Enlightenment contemporaries, she believed that reason
was a virtue since it empowered the mind to think freely and independently. Reason allowed one to
truly express his or her ideas. The best way to cultivate such reasoning was to become educated. Thus,
both men and women should be educated for the betterment of society as a whole since both sexes
would then be able to contribute a broader range of ideas. However, the general consensus amongst
her contemporaries in 18th century England was that women were more artificial, weak
characters...and, consequently, more useless members of society (Wollstonecraft 134). Women were
expected to lead domesticated lives and become dependent on men. They were considered as
housewives, not expected to contribute to society or stand out in anyway. Therefore, women did not
have the same amount of access to a proper education as men did since they were not expected to be
involved with forming their own reasoning and opinions. As a result, women only learned what they
perceived and experienced from the world, left to play guess work rather than make observations and
draw conclusions and speculations. Without critical thinking,

Stainless Steel Lab Report Discussion
Analysis The observations during this experiment mean several things. The bubbles around the
materials in the beginning of each trial show that there is a reaction starting to happen. The bubbles
around the stainless steel can mean that, while there was no measurable change in the mass, it is
possible some of the stainless steel was corroded. This prediction was confirmed in the second trial
when the stainless steel did have a measurable change in mass. The change in color in the water of the
steel shows that a solid precipitate was created. There was also evidence of a precipitate in the flakes
around the steel. Another piece of evidence showing that precipitate formed was the cloudiness of the
liquid around the iron. The reason that the vinegar smell dissipated from the iron and mild steel is
because all of the acetic acid in the vinegar was used up creating what would have been just water if a
precipitate had not formed. The mode of each trial varies for each metal, and each one shows
something different. The modes for Iron in trial one are 0.3% and 0.4%. These show that they
corroded a little, and consistently due to the fat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The copper in this experiment was the least corroded, as was predicted. When the metals are compared
to mild steel, the standard of comparison, all of them performed better, so they would all make better
tanks according to the results of this experiment. The practical applications of this would be using
copper to make the tanks under gas stations. For further experimentation one could investigate the
discrepancy in the mild steel between trials 1 and 2. One could also investigate the effect of oxidation
on how well the metals would work. There is also the possibility of investigating which metal would
be the most cost effective. Another investigation that could be done would be seeing if the surface area
of the samples would affect the corrosion of the

The Effects Of Video Game Play On The Educational Process
Video game play can be very beneficial in the educational process. It can enhance cognitive abilities
and skills in children and adolescents. In fact, studies have found that improvements in cognition have
been related to grey matter changes in the prefrontal cortex. Specifically, a study conducted by Simon
Kuhn, in which magnetic resonance imaging scans of 152 14 year old adolescents were collected and
used to estimate cortical thickness, showed an increase in cortical thickness in the left dorsolateral
prefrontal cortex and in correlation an increase in cognitive and strategic planning abilities (Simon
Kuhn 5). These results come from the need to follow directions in games. In order to progress in
games, one must first learn to follow the guidelines, restrictions and components of them. As the
player confronts new challenges, he must use problem solving skills to find solutions. The player must
find new combinations and incorporate old skills with new skills to overcome obstacles. In relation,
players must also get used to multitasking. As games become more intricate, players must juggle
different objectives while keeping track of all the changing elements and connecting ideas. Games
induce quick thinking as well. According to cognitive scientist Daphne Bavelier of the University of
Rochester, results of a study found that people who play video games become more attuned to their
environment, are able to keep visual tabs on friends in crowds, can navigate better, and are

An online poll showed 81% of people believe Indira Gandhi s assassination was justified. It was a
sunny day in New Delhi, India when the prime minister of India dies. The day was October 31, 1984;
she was shot by 2 of her bodyguards named Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. The assassination of
Indira Gandhi was unjustified because she went to war for India s independence and wanted to help
the environment; however, some people believe she was making unintelligent decisions for India.
Nevertheless, Indira used her power and politics to improve the environment. She had power and a

There are three sociological perspectives of race and ethnicity which are functionalist, conflict, and
labeling perspectives. The first one I will discuss is the functionalist perspective. The functionalist
perspective emphasizes how the parts of society are structured to maintain its stability. As also
described in the reading the functionalist approach is an approach, if an aspect of social life does not
contribute to a society s stability or survival, it will not be passed on from one generation to the next.
The functionalist perspective thinks that racial hostility is hard to be admired but the functionalist

As described it was the movement of 2 million African American out of the Southern United States to
the Midwest, Northeast, and West from 1910 to 1930. They migrated to escape racism and seek
employment opportunities in industrial cities.
When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 less than eight percent of the African
American population lived in the northeastern or Midwestern U.S. As described, Between 1910 and
1930, the African American population grew by about 40% in Northern states, mostly in the major
cities. Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Cleveland had some of the biggest increases in
the early part of the century. Because changes were concentrated in cities, urban tensions rose as
African Americans and new or recent European immigrants, both groups chiefly from rural societies,
competed for jobs and housing with the white ethnic working class. Tensions were often most severe
between ethnic Irish, defending their positions, and recent immigrants and blacks.
African Americans moved as individuals or small family groups. There was no government assistance,
but often northern industries, such as the railroads, meatpacking and stockyards, recruited people. The
primary factor for migration was the racial climate and widespread violence of lynching in the South.
In the North, they could find better schools and adult men could vote (joined by women after 1920).

The Impact of Mental Illnesses and Health Problems from Work Related Stress on Employees in
Office Jobs
Introduction
Year after year a behavioral change began to impact her life; she became irritable, fatigued and gained
almost fifty pounds. She was no longer fun to be around and isolated herself away from everyone. Her
kids would ask if she was okay and knew something was wrong. The work related stress and
harassment she received from her bosses triggered symptoms of depression. The job took place at
Unknown Healthcare where she was an administrative assistant. An office job that paid fairly well,
however, was stressful because of the rigorous demands from the bosses and the abusive behavior in
which they treated her. She was working 9 5 everyday with some days of overtime while being a
single parent with two young kids. She decided it was in her best interest to quit the job and find
something where she would be happier and healthier. However the damage was already done as she
currently, to this day, suffers from chronic depression. After leaving the job she began taking anti
depressants and found a job that she loves. You can see a huge improvement in behavior, as she has
more energy and is enjoyable to be around again. She will be interviewed in a different segment with
regards to the study. Stress in the workplace is a common safety and health issue in the 21st century
and can lead to mental illnesses such as depression if untreated for years. Not only

makes a referral to have an individual student evaluated to determine if there is a disability. Special
education comes at no extra cost to the parents of the student. Gibb and Dyches (2016), mention how

Gibb and Dyches (2016) state, Academic achievement refers to gaining requisite skills and knowledge
for success in school (p. 47), and functional performance can be defined as applying knowledge and
skills to meet daily needs (p. 47). Reading, writing, and math are academic achievement skills that are
crucial to the students learning because they all are required for other subjects. In contrary, functional
performance involves adaptive skills such as feeding and dressing oneself, and meeting appropriate
school behaviors. Gibb and Dyches (2016) mention that the PLAAFP statement derives from
reviewing the curriculum standards for academic achievement, determining the students current
academic strengths and limitations, and assessing the students current functional strengths and
limitations (p. 48).
Measurable Annual Goals
Measurable annual goals are used to identify what the individual student is expected to achieve within
one year to address what effects the disability has caused. Gibb and Dyches (2016) define the word
measurable as the behavior stated in the goal can be observed and measured to determine when it has
been achieved (p. 60). Therefore, in order to be considered a measurable academic and functional
performance goal the goal must be able to be measured, must meet the individual student needs that
are in relation to the disability and cause problems within the general education curriculum, and must
also meet any other additional

almost anyone someone meets may be considered as a friend. Given the vast amount of people that

understandable categories. In her essay, What Are Friends For? Marion Winik does an admirable job
of placing the people in her life into categories based on what those people meant to her. Two of the
many categories she talks about are Buddies, and the Relative Friend. In this essay, I will talk about

Roman And Greek Gods And Goddesses In The Modern World
Another important contribution to our modern world is Roman Greek gods and goddesses because of
its impact by helping the world with inventive names, gorgeous religious temples and even the
Olympics. Ancient Greece invented the Greek gods to make sense in the world, for example, how was
the earth made, why seasons change etc, for example, to explain why Greece only had three seasons
summer, winter spring. People came up with the story of how (the god of the Underworld) Hades
created winter by kidnapping Persephone (goddess of springtime and flowers). Many structures,
company s products are named after many Greek Roman gods like Apollo 69 (rocket ship), statue of
liberty (modeled after the goddess Libertas), Nike (shoe brand), Pandora (Jewelry), Amazon (online
shopping website), Saturn (car company) Dionysus Wine Spirits (wine company) etc. A lot of Roman
names were used to be the names of planets, some were used for modern things like cereal (Ceres),
volcano (Vulcan), Mars chocolate bar (Mars) etc. Speaking of names, Roman gods were originally the
Olympian gods, who had their names changed because the Romans wanted to claim them as their
gods. Each Greek god and goddess s name were changed to fit their roman form, for example, Zeus
got changed to Jupiter, Demeter to Ceres, Hera to Juno, Hades to Pluto, Artemis to Diana and many
more other ones. Since the Greeks have an abundant amount of deities, it most likely they have a vast
amount of temples to worship their gods and goddesses. Some Greek gods and goddesses are
considered patrons of city states in the land of Greece, for example Helios (original god of the sun)
patrons glorious Corinth, while Ares (god of war) patrons murderous Sparta, Athena (goddess of
wisdom), patrons the great city of Athens. The ancient Olympics were created in honor of Zeus (god
of the sky and lightning), where city states compete for laurel wreaths to gain honor for their city
states. The ancient Olympics was considered a men only thing (because men competing were nude), a
bit like young woman serving at the temple of Vesta (Greek form Hestia), where they had to keep a

Understanding Literacy And Its Basic Definition
Literacy is a resource that when allocated amidst political, social and gender constraints benefits
society as a whole. Literacy by its basic definition is how one can read, write and communicate
effectively with people. Beyond that, it s about being competent in a subject area. For example,
reading in a literate level means that a person is able to read fluently by pronouncing words correctly
without many mistakes. Another form of literacy when reading, is when a person can read in public
without having many issues. For example in a conference, meeting, or social gathering, the person is
adept in being competent. Of course this idea of literacy and competency is subjective by nature.
Utilizing proper vocabulary, grammar and structure are components of being literate in the discipline
of English. Communication is essential as well and can also be a form of literacy. Communicating is
how a person has the ability to develop a strong argument against someone and provide more reasons
why their point may be argued. It is important to realize that it is also important to listen to others and
benefit from the life experiences of others literacy. In a technologically driven society my literacy in
computers has benefited me immensely, as it has allowed me to bestow upon others forms of
competency that will hopefully be a domino effect of education that betters society. Literacy is the
ability to read and write, or be competent in a discipline. It is important to be

Queen Gertrude Is Responsible For Ophelia s Death
In Hamlet, William Shakespeare leaves many mysteries for the audience to decipher on their own.
One such, is the mystery surrounding Ophelia s death. Harmonie Loberg, in the article, Queen
Gertrude: Monarch, Mother, Murderer, argues that, Queen Gertrude is responsible for Ophelia s death
(60). The Queen s description of Ophelia s death is controversial because it is so full of detail, that
many believe it must be an eye witness account. Did the Queen kill Ophelia to try and protect Hamlet?
The last scene seems to answer this question, as the Queen shares in the same fate that befalls all of
the other murderers in the play. Ophelia s death is suspicious and should not be thought of as a suicide,
but instead a calculated murder by an overly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When people get an idea in their heads that their leaders are corrupt it can lead to governments being
overthrown. These songs, and the idea that they put into the heads of the people, are enough to give
the Queen a motive to get rid of Ophelia, and her rambling on about the death of her father and the
return of her brother only add to the fire (4.5 29 33, 71). What may keep her from killing Ophelia at
this point is the knowledge that the King has sent Hamlet to England, where she believes he is safe.
The Queen knows Laertes is on his way home and if Hamlet were to return now, there would be
trouble. When Laertes returns he incites a riot, seeking revenge for his father s murder, he goes after
the King. When he finally gains admission to the King he is very angry and the Queen has to hold him
back (4.5. ). Loberg says this is when the Queen switches from a woman who handles her problems

Northwestern Men s Swimming Organizational Structure
Northwestern Men s Swimming as a Rational Organization
Rational Organizations Theory is an idea that has been motivated by social theorist Max Weber who
explains that traditionally, organizations were structured in a way that favored traditionalism, where
relationships, values, and other political agendas explained the framework for which an organization
was constructed and that over the course of time, this organizational structure will continue to move
towards a more modern platform promoting rational behavior, rational decision making, and a rational
culture. Rational organizations use formal structures to designate people and positions of authority to
specific tasks in order to improve predictability and calculability. Although the behavioral
characteristics of rational organizations are typically demonstrated in academia by analyzing the
structure and delegation of tasks within organizations like financial firms, small businesses, and
professional sports franchises, a space that is often overlooked is ... Show more content on

It is important to recognize that the bureaucratic structure of Northwestern Men s Swimming is
indicative of its rationality. There are delegated roles designed to allow different departments to
operate within their respective sphere of competences, which theoretically should translate to a
lubricated, rational organization. However, the idea of over rationalization and the iron cage of
rationality is not something that should be overlooked here. Weekly meetings with psychologists,
constant check ups with trainers, and the lack of an off season are all things that, when viewed through
the lens of rational decision maker, are things that should better the program in its entirety. However,
there comes a point when the returns to these investments begin to decrease, as over rationalization
may actually become irrational, and inhibit

Can Marijuana Really Kill You? Probably Not. A new report

for Disease Control and Prevention and many of the several news articles it triggered, are blaming a
space cookie for killing a teenager in Colorado illustrating a potential danger associated with
recreational edible marijuana use. But is it fair to say that weed kills? The new CDC report states that
a teenager in Colorado died after consuming an entire marijuana cookie that contained 6 servings of
marijuana s active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In this week s Morbidity and Mortality
report, the incident was labeled as the first linked to marijuana consumption without evidence of ...

one sixth of the cookie the equivalent of about 10 mg of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in weed
that causes the high. It is undeniable that the THC level in his blood was high 49 ng/mL. Some
research suggests that high doses of THC can produce serious anxiety attacks and psychoticlike
symptoms, but can we really call this a marijuana overdose? There are a number of factors that rule
out this possibility. Although it is true that dose matters and that Thamba, was marijuana naivee , what

Book Review: Julius Caesar s The Conquest of Gaul
[underline or italicize titles of books]
Between the years 58 B.C.E and 50 B.C.E., Gaius Julius Caesar conquered almost the whole of France
as well as Belgium, Switzerland and parts of Germany; he also found time to invade Britain twice.
Julius Caesar was a Roman statesman and general who played a critical role in the demise of the
Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. He amassed great power through clever political
alliances and military victories. Caesar recorded his conquests in great detail which provides valuable
historical text to refer to; however it must be kept in mind that it is a clear piece of propaganda. As the
saying goes, the winner gets to write history. Nonetheless, Caesar s writings are a unique firsthand
source on his conquests in Gaul and the various Gallic tribes he came up against.
Central themes evident in his memoir are war, devotion and persuasion. Caesar was clear to outline in
his commentaries how each of his campaigns was in the best interest of the republic. He depicted
himself as a loyal servant to the Roman people and therefore portrayed his actions and decisions in the
most favorable way possible. Those who would have read his work at the time would have felt
inspired and consequently considered him a hero. Caesar s books were intended to aid future
historians in telling his story accurately and [in a way

This theory explains that a pain modulating system exists with a neutral gate in the cord that can open
and close leading to modulation of the pain gate. Proposing that physical, emotional and mental
conditions are responsible for closing and opening the gate, found in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord.
Moreover, it helps to explain the relationship between thoughts and emotions in modifying the
perception of pain, why actions such as music, imagery, and distraction help to relieve it. For example,
understanding that the gate may be opened by bodily injury, anxiety, and depression. The gate may be
closed by analgesia, good mood, and distraction. Therefore by administering analgesia to a patient, the
pain gate can be closed and by using music and relaxation activities. In the authors clinical area a day

The Juvenile System
For over an era of time, states have thought that the juvenile system was a way to protect the
community by producing a method that reacts to children who are growing into adulthood. States
know that children who are young offenders and commit crimes are not the same as adults. The
children are less responsible, and they have a bigger ability for transformation. To react to these
changes, states have recognized that a detached court for juveniles from adults. They have formed a
separate, children constructed service provision system that is dissimilar than what is delivered to
adults. In history there were three types of juvenile organizations started to appear in the USA

Kitty Ball Character Analysis
When we were first introduced to Kitty, I thought she was a standard, sheltered little princess with few
problems in her life. She seemed like a Bella Swan style bimbo, a perfectly beautiful airhead from a
poorly written fanfiction. Jacob or Edward? Vronsky or Levin? Her life was like an empty romance
story disguised by flowery language. She s loved despite having absolutely no merit. And in many
ways, Kitty truly is a spoiled, overprotected girl. But, when she is rejected by Vronsky, something
inside her fundamentally changes.
Kitty s rejection by Vronsky is not just a single heartbreak; instead, it is representative of growing up
and learning about the harsh realities of life in one blow.
Kitty begins as a character who is very secure in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She isn t some trashy homewrecker who Kitty can bring herself to hate or even brush off; she s a
mature and elegant woman who is far more grown than Kitty is. Even her outfit reflects this: even
though Kitty thought Anna would look most beautiful in a bright, gaudy lilac, Anna chooses to wear a
minimal, and yet ultimately more stunning, black dress. Kitty observes Anna s dance with Vronsky,
and the feeling that she will never truly come to understand everything in the way Anna does hits her
hard. In comparison to Anna, Kitty is unquestionably a child, and this comes with two thoughts: first,
the thought that she is the inferior woman, and second, the realization that she is too inexperienced to
be making decisions about such important matters as marriage.
She becomes further overwhelmed by the weight of choosing a spouse as it becomes clear to her that
her thought that Vronsky ever loved her was completely wrong. As Kitty observes Vronsky and Anna
s dance, it hits her that Vronsky has never loved her in the first place. She sees that Anna was drunk
with the wine of the rapture she inspired (81) in Vronsky. Vronsky s admiration and obedience is clear
as day to Kitty, and she is horrified (81) to see how he loses all her confidence in the face of Anna s
beauty. As she watches the two dance, she experiences a feeling she never has before jealousy. She can
feel the significance of every motion they make. Kitty, who has never seen Vronsky s glazed face,

Charitable Donations
With advances in technology have come easier strategies for raising charitable funds to help
individuals who have fallen victim to disaster and tragedy. Charitable organizations can now raise
more money quicker with the help of technology, but an unfortunate consequence has also been the
increase in organizations claiming to be charitable committing fraud and using donations for profit
purposes. Even major trusted organizations like the Red Cross have recently come under fire in regard
to irresponsible use of donated funds. Subsequently, individuals who want to help have begun
showing increasing amounts of uncertainty, as they do not know exactly where their donations would
be going. The result is an unfortunate drop in donations when they are most needed, especially in
times of disaster such as following Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. As a charitable organization
that wants to maximize aid to those suffering, it is important to take strategic actions to help reduce
potential donors uneasiness by utilizing the Uncertainty Reduction Theory to develop active and
interactive strategies that would include setting up a transparent information flow so that donors can
easily find information to ensure reliability in donations as well as establish relationships of trust
through interacting with donors individually and opening up a reciprocal conversation.
Fraudulent use of charitable donations is an unfortunate reality that threatens the ability for honest

Self Care In Shel Silverstein s The Giving Tree
At one point in a person s life, one usually finds a companion so strong they would do anything for
them. At least, there is a common misconception that one can give their all to somebody they care for,
simply because they care. The downside is, the relationship turns for the worse. When the giver gives,
the taker becomes greedy, and often times, the giver sticks around even when they are being clearly
exploited. Being taken advantage of and naivety come together hand in hand. Therefore, in Shel
Silverstein s The Giving Tree, the Tree is naive and being taken advantage of because she puts the Boy
s happiness and well being ENTIRELY above her own, ultimately leading to her self destruction. The
Boy also habitually returns to reap the benefits of the Tree ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Giving Tree becomes so absorbed in her concerns for the Boy that she neglects to truly take care
of herself. While Silverstein states in the poem that the Giving Tree loved the Boy, all of her
subsequent actions benefited the Boy and harmed herself. She was only content when caring for the
Boy; she never seemed to be complete by herself. Thus, when the little Boy wanted money, she gave
her fruits to him to sell. She gifted her branches to him, so that he could build the house he wanted.
Then she gifted her trunk, so that the Boy could sail away in his own boat. By the time the Boy had
aged into seniority, he had already reduced the Tree to a stump. In relation to self care, it s also vitally
important to remove toxicity in your life. Somebody who drains you of energy is toxic. The Boy came
back time and time again to ask for more, and then would leave her behind

Evaluating Course Quality And Faculty Teaching
Evaluating Course Quality and Faculty Teaching
Evaluating courses are important for ensuring that the student s educational needs are being met.
Furthermore, it ensures the education being provided aligns with the institution s mission, goals and
policy. Students, peer faculty members, and administrators all play significant roles in the evaluation
process. The course I chose to evaluate is an online, undergraduate, and didactic course. Three
different evaluation tools are discussed that assesses faculty teaching, student satisfaction, and course
quality.
Evaluation Methods

( Midterm Student Feedback, n.d.). Survey methods are the most popular methods for evaluating MSF.
The IDEA model is another evaluation resource. It also utilizes a student rating system for allowing
students to evaluate instructor teaching and student satisfaction with the course. Research states that
students tend to have higher exam scores, can apply the material better and are more apt to pursue the
subject subsequently, when they learn from instructors with high ratings. (Benton and Cashin, 2012).
Furthermore, improving student satisfaction. The IDEA survey evaluates six different factors
commonly found on student rating evaluation forms. Overall, students find that course organization
and planning, clarity and communication skills, teacher/student interaction and rapport, course
difficulty and workload, grading and examinations, and student self rated learning are all essential
components to improving satisfaction with the instructor and course. (Benton and Cashin, 2012).
Traditionally, in the live classroom setting, administrators or peer evaluators could pay a scheduled or
unscheduled visit to the classroom and began the evaluation process. The advantage was observing the
instructor in real time and the interaction with students. Well, with the recent shift of live classrooms
becoming more distance accessible online courses, this process is similar but executed differently.

Maple Syr Up Research Paper
How to make Maple Syrup
My family has been making maple syrup for over 100 years. My siblings, cousins, and I are the 6th
generation of syrup makers in our family. Everyone in the family has their part to play during the 6
week long syrup season. The process of making maple syrup is a long and hard one but in the end it s
totally worth all of the loss of sleep, frozen and aching limbs, and the extra time we take out of our
lives to make syrup every year. Our family usually starts the season on Valentine s Day as a family
tradition to start drilling in the woods and to get all of the firewood we need ready for the entire
season. For the whole 6 week season we need to use 30 chords of firewood to use during the
evaporation process. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first grade is called Grade A it has three different ambers and is mostly used on the table. There is
light amber, which is light in color and delicate in taste. Medium amber has a mellow flavor to it and
medium in color. The dark amber is obviously dark in color and full flavored. The next grade is B
which is mostly used in the kitchen but personally, this is my favorite grade of syrup. It is more robust
in flavor and it is used mostly to cook with. The next grade is C which is the commercial syrup. We
don t usually sell this stuff off our shelves to the customers but it still has a good maple flavor. The last
grade is grade D which is the nastiest syrup of the season. Its what we call Buddy Syrup . It has that
name because since it s the last sap of the season collected, it has a bitter taste to it from the buds of
the trees. We don t sell it or even bother putting it in the jugs like the rest of the syrup. We put it in the
stainless steel drums and it gets taken to factories that make the syrup sold in grocery stores. So, the
factories take 2% of the Buddy Syrup , and 98% water and corn syrup and mix it all together and send
it to grocery stores all over and most people buy it that way. The buddy syrup can also be used to
sweeten tobacco and horse feed. It can also turn out to look just like the other grades that we actually
sell to customers. All I have to say is that Mother Nature can be great to work with some years, and
others, she can be a real pain in the

Vincent Van Gogh And Post Impressionism
What defines art? More importantly, who defines good or bad art? Does that make one who deals with
art in any way is a judge in their own right? When viewed in that perspective, art is practically
subjective in its natural state. Perhaps, that is why the artistic community is so diverse. It could be said
that each of those categories are composed of artists who prefer that certain style of expression.
Vincent Willem van Gogh, generally speaking, falls into the category of being an Post Impressionist,
with a twist.
Loosely speaking, what does Post Impressionism work usually appear to be? In the name of all things
casual, the style of Post Impressionism actually was not to strict in what they depicted for their style.
However, amidst all these individual styles and interpretations, there were commons threads that all
linked them to the category Post Impressionism. For instance, most works of art belonging to this
category, seem to place an emphasis of abstract, symbolic and personal meanings/emotions envisioned
within the pieces (Post Impressionism, 2017). Not only that, but also the application of structure,
order, and the optical effects of color dominated the aesthetic vision in efforts to describe the world
around them (Post Impressionism, 2017). Judging by those characteristics, van Gogh fit in quite easily
with the diverse group of artists that composed the Post Impressionist style of artwork.
No doubt that van Gogh enjoyed such expressive forms to create

  • 2. Literature Review Performance Management and the Balanced... Chapter 2 Literature Review Since the Balanced Scorecard was developed in the 1990 s by Robert Kaplan and David Norton (1992), it has gained in popularity amongst academics and practitioners. In 1990, Kaplan and Norton led a research study of a lot of companies with the purpose of exploring the new methods of performance management. The importance of the study was an increasing belief that the financial measures of performance management were not as effective as before with the development of modern business enterprise. Representatives involved in the study companies, including the researchers Kaplan and Norton, were persuaded that the reliance on financial measures of performance had an effect on their ability to create value. After ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2003). Similar to Speckbacher et al. (2003), this study examines the structure of the BALANCED SCORECARD as a whole. This study is however, unique in that it addresses both the structure and use of the BALANCED SCORECARD. Kaplan amp; Norton (1992; 1996; 2001), the originators of the balanced scorecard, emphasize that the inclusion of non financial measures is just one aspect of the balanced scorecard, noting that there are several structural attributes that make it unique from other frameworks, such as KPI (key performance indicator) cards and stakeholder cards. Kaplan amp; Norton (1996, 2001) also suggest that its unique structure allows it to be used as a strategic tool to steer organizations towards sustained long term profitability. They argue that simply including non financial metrics in their performance measurement system is not enough for organizations to learn, improve, and grow. If Kaplan and Norton s argument is correct, then companies with different levels of BALANCED SCORECARD adoption should see different results. This suggests a need to compare organizations that have different levels or numbers of balanced scorecard attributes to see if there are any differences. As well, academic studies may be more comparable if a clearly defined Balanced Scorecard was used. A clearly defined BALANCED SCORECARD would enable organizations and researchers to assess the level of BALANCED SCORECARD adoption which may help to explain some of the differences in ... In music, harmony is the vertical of pitch with a part of several pitches sounded at the same time. It unlike rhythm and melody as it was not part of music from the beginning but it is an upstart. Harmony combined pitches into chords to please our ears. Harmony is a magic compare to other elements of music. The tonal gravitational forces for harmony are more complex and powerful than the melody. Chord progression is the heart of western harmony that the harmony does not stay static and it moves. Whenever the note in the melody collides with the two supporting drone, three note chord is created and three note chord is the basic of western harmony. Furthermore, harmony also contributes to the structural design of music. The arrangement of melodic lends itself to hierarchical design more noticeably than does harmony. This is because repetition of patterned material more obvious in melody then it is in harmony. The pattern of frequency of vibration that created within an instrument named as harmonics. • 4. Who Is St. Thomas Aquinas Determinants Of Natural Law St. Thomas Aquinas interpreted Aristotle s philosophies to be read in a Christian lens. His view demonstrates that moral obligations are determinants of a natural law, one that is acquired from each individual s God given nature and is knowable by [all] (McBrayer Markie 2014, p. 241). Aquinas emphasized morality being crucial for everyone, and that God s plans for his creations include being good. Although, he knew that not everyone was informed of God s moral rules; so, he theorized that God created the world in accordance to natural laws in which his creations have an innate sense of knowing what is good for themselves. From our intuitive desires, some inclinations are natural, while others are unnatural. According to Aquinas, the natural proclivities occur from eternal law, which states that the whole community of the universe is governed by divine reason (McBrayer Markie 2014, p. 242), and sharing eternal reason for rational beings lead to natural law. ... Natural law consists of discerning what is good and what is evil (McBrayer Markie 2014, p. 242), such as the prohibition and positive injunction aspects of a basic good. A basic good includes having a survival instinct to value life, and a person can reason that others have valuable lives as well, so killing is a violation of natural law. The prohibition in this scenario is to not kill, while the positive injunction is to promote life. This natural inclination based on the basic good of life will enable a person to aid others and themselves, through charities or healthy lifestyles. • 5. Wilhelm Rontgen and the Nobel Prize Essay Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was born on March 27, 1845 in Lennep, Prussia; which is now Remscheid, Germany. His family moved to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, where we went to Institute of Martinus Herman van Doorn, a boarding school. He did not show any special aptitude, but he had a fascination with nature and loved roaming the countryside and walking through forests. Later he attended a technical school in Utrecht, but unfortunately was unfairly expelled for allegedly drawing a rude caricature of one of the teachers, which was in fact drawn by another student. He then entered the University of Utrecht in 1865 to study physics. He did not have the required credentials to enter the University, but he heard he could enter by passing an exam. He ... It was later called Roentgen Rays although changed back to X Ray . With his new discovery, he found that the rays would travel through human tissue, but leave a shadow of bone and metal behind. One of his first experiments was on his wife Bertha s hand with a ring on her finger in 1895. Medical X rays work by letting fast moving electrons come to a sudden stop on a metal plate. They show up different on the radiograph because of different absorption rates of different material. The calcium in bones absorb the most x rays so they appear white on a radiograph, or the film x rays are displayed on, although other things like tissue, fat and skin absorb it less so they appear grey. Air absorbs the least x rays so this is why lungs look completely black on a radiograph. Todays x ray machines are much faster, more efficient and produce much less harmful radiation. Excessive exposure to x rays can be dangerous but in modern medicine doctors are able to keep us safe with their knowledge on this. The original x ray machine took 90 minutes and produced 1500 times the radiation as modern x rays. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen has made a huge impact on todays technology. It s obvious to see that inventing the x ray is a big deal, but this was actually a very big accomplishment and made a lot of new things possible. • 6. An Analysis Of Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication Of The... The Age of Enlightenment encouraged writers to break away from conventional thought and express their ideas and opinions through reasoning. Mary Wollstonecraft s A Vindication of the Rights of Women and Marquis de Sade s Philosophy in the Bedroom examine the conventional norms in their respective author s contemporary societies. In both accounts, Wollstonecraft and Sade prescribe the path humanity should take in order to improve the human condition. Marquis de Sade develops an unconventional philosophy by claiming that cruelty is nature s most basic quality. He supports the idea that humans are born with the notion of cruelty and thus, should embrace their destructive instincts. According to him, might is right because in the state of ... However, she focuses on the importance and value of education, believing that the most perfect education...is such an exercise of the understanding as is best calculated to strengthen the body and form the heart (Wollstonecraft 134). Like her Enlightenment contemporaries, she believed that reason was a virtue since it empowered the mind to think freely and independently. Reason allowed one to truly express his or her ideas. The best way to cultivate such reasoning was to become educated. Thus, both men and women should be educated for the betterment of society as a whole since both sexes would then be able to contribute a broader range of ideas. However, the general consensus amongst her contemporaries in 18th century England was that women were more artificial, weak characters...and, consequently, more useless members of society (Wollstonecraft 134). Women were expected to lead domesticated lives and become dependent on men. They were considered as housewives, not expected to contribute to society or stand out in anyway. Therefore, women did not have the same amount of access to a proper education as men did since they were not expected to be involved with forming their own reasoning and opinions. As a result, women only learned what they perceived and experienced from the world, left to play guess work rather than make observations and draw conclusions and speculations. • 8. Stainless Steel Lab Report Discussion Analysis The observations during this experiment mean several things. The bubbles around the materials in the beginning of each trial show that there is a reaction starting to happen. The bubbles around the stainless steel can mean that, while there was no measurable change in the mass, it is possible some of the stainless steel was corroded. This prediction was confirmed in the second trial when the stainless steel did have a measurable change in mass. The change in color in the water of the steel shows that a solid precipitate was created. There was also evidence of a precipitate in the flakes around the steel. Another piece of evidence showing that precipitate formed was the cloudiness of the liquid around the iron. The reason that the vinegar smell dissipated from the iron and mild steel is because all of the acetic acid in the vinegar was used up creating what would have been just water if a precipitate had not formed. The mode of each trial varies for each metal, and each one shows something different. The modes for Iron in trial one are 0.3% and 0.4%. For further experimentation one could investigate the discrepancy in the mild steel between trials 1 and 2. One could also investigate the effect of oxidation on how well the metals would work. There is also the possibility of investigating which metal would be the most cost effective. • 9. The Effects Of Video Game Play On The Educational Process Video game play can be very beneficial in the educational process. It can enhance cognitive abilities and skills in children and adolescents. In fact, studies have found that improvements in cognition have been related to grey matter changes in the prefrontal cortex. Specifically, a study conducted by Simon Kuhn, in which magnetic resonance imaging scans of 152 14 year old adolescents were collected and used to estimate cortical thickness, showed an increase in cortical thickness in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and in correlation an increase in cognitive and strategic planning abilities (Simon Kuhn 5). These results come from the need to follow directions in games. In order to progress in games, one must first learn to follow the guidelines, restrictions and components of them. As the player confronts new challenges, he must use problem solving skills to find solutions. The player must find new combinations and incorporate old skills with new skills to overcome obstacles. In relation, players must also get used to multitasking. As games become more intricate, players must juggle different objectives while keeping track of all the changing elements and connecting ideas. Games induce quick thinking as well. According to cognitive scientist Daphne Bavelier of the University of Rochester, results of a study found that people who play video games become more attuned to their environment, are able to keep visual tabs on friends in crowds, can navigate better, and are ... It was a sunny day in New Delhi, India when the prime minister of India dies. The day was October 31, 1984; she was shot by 2 of her bodyguards named Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. The assassination of Indira Gandhi was unjustified because she went to war for India s independence and wanted to help the environment; however, some people believe she was making unintelligent decisions for India. She tried to help the environment while fighting alongside others. Indira fought for India, she took the time to fight for her territory, her people. She used her position as prime minister to keep India Independent. During her independence day anniversary speech, she said her people should celebrate this day. While she was the prime minister, she tried her best to make positive changes in India. Some people believe she was making poor decisions for India. When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 less than eight percent of the African American population lived in the northeastern or Midwestern U.S. As described, Between 1910 and 1930, the African American population grew by about 40% in Northern states, mostly in the major cities. Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Cleveland had some of the biggest increases in the early part of the century. Because changes were concentrated in cities, urban tensions rose as African Americans and new or recent European immigrants, both groups chiefly from rural societies, competed for jobs and housing with the white ethnic working class. Tensions were often most severe between ethnic Irish, defending their positions, and recent immigrants and blacks. African Americans moved as individuals or small family groups. There was no government assistance, but often northern industries, such as the railroads, meatpacking and stockyards, recruited people. The primary factor for migration was the racial climate and widespread violence of lynching in the South. The work related stress and harassment she received from her bosses triggered symptoms of depression. The job took place at Unknown Healthcare where she was an administrative assistant. An office job that paid fairly well, however, was stressful because of the rigorous demands from the bosses and the abusive behavior in which they treated her. She was working 9 5 everyday with some days of overtime while being a single parent with two young kids. She decided it was in her best interest to quit the job and find something where she would be happier and healthier. However the damage was already done as she currently, to this day, suffers from chronic depression. After leaving the job she began taking anti depressants and found a job that she loves. You can see a huge improvement in behavior, as she has more energy and is enjoyable to be around again. She will be interviewed in a different segment with regards to the study. The process used to determine special education starts when either a teacher or a parent makes a referral to have an individual student evaluated to determine if there is a disability. Reading, writing, and math are academic achievement skills that are crucial to the students learning because they all are required for other subjects. In contrary, functional performance involves adaptive skills such as feeding and dressing oneself, and meeting appropriate school behaviors. Gibb and Dyches (2016) mention that the PLAAFP statement derives from reviewing the curriculum standards for academic achievement, determining the students current academic strengths and limitations, and assessing the students current functional strengths and limitations (p. 48). Measurable Annual Goals Measurable annual goals are used to identify what the individual student is expected to achieve within one year to address what effects the disability has caused. • 16. Roman And Greek Gods And Goddesses In The Modern World Another important contribution to our modern world is Roman Greek gods and goddesses because of its impact by helping the world with inventive names, gorgeous religious temples and even the Olympics. Ancient Greece invented the Greek gods to make sense in the world, for example, how was the earth made, why seasons change etc, for example, to explain why Greece only had three seasons summer, winter spring. People came up with the story of how (the god of the Underworld) Hades created winter by kidnapping Persephone (goddess of springtime and flowers). Many structures, company s products are named after many Greek Roman gods like Apollo 69 (rocket ship), statue of liberty (modeled after the goddess Libertas), Nike (shoe brand), Pandora (Jewelry), Amazon (online shopping website), Saturn (car company) Dionysus Wine Spirits (wine company) etc. A lot of Roman names were used to be the names of planets, some were used for modern things like cereal (Ceres), volcano (Vulcan), Mars chocolate bar (Mars) etc. Speaking of names, Roman gods were originally the Olympian gods, who had their names changed because the Romans wanted to claim them as their gods. Each Greek god and goddess s name were changed to fit their roman form, for example, Zeus got changed to Jupiter, Demeter to Ceres, Hera to Juno, Hades to Pluto, Artemis to Diana and many more other ones. Since the Greeks have an abundant amount of deities, it most likely they have a vast amount of temples to worship their gods and goddesses. Some Greek gods and goddesses are considered patrons of city states in the land of Greece, for example Helios (original god of the sun) patrons glorious Corinth, while Ares (god of war) patrons murderous Sparta, Athena (goddess of wisdom), patrons the great city of Athens. The ancient Olympics were created in honor of Zeus (god of the sky and lightning), where city states compete for laurel wreaths to gain honor for their city states. The ancient Olympics was considered a men only thing (because men competing were nude), a bit like young woman serving at the temple of Vesta (Greek form Hestia), where they had to keep a flame alight or face the consequences and be buried alive, otherwise they brought honor to their ... • 18. Understanding Literacy And Its Basic Definition Literacy is a resource that when allocated amidst political, social and gender constraints benefits society as a whole. Literacy by its basic definition is how one can read, write and communicate effectively with people. Beyond that, it s about being competent in a subject area. For example, reading in a literate level means that a person is able to read fluently by pronouncing words correctly without many mistakes. Another form of literacy when reading, is when a person can read in public without having many issues. For example in a conference, meeting, or social gathering, the person is adept in being competent. Of course this idea of literacy and competency is subjective by nature. Utilizing proper vocabulary, grammar and structure are components of being literate in the discipline of English. Communication is essential as well and can also be a form of literacy. Communicating is how a person has the ability to develop a strong argument against someone and provide more reasons why their point may be argued. It is important to realize that it is also important to listen to others and benefit from the life experiences of others literacy.
