In this session, I will review the literature on virtual communities of practice and wikis in emergency medicine. I will propose a new model for knowledge translation to link emergency physicians from across Canada in the creation of a novel open-source and free database of shared resources that can be reused and adapted to local contexts. Finally, I will provide a glimpse of a new era in knowledge translation in the era of the Semantic Web. Learning Objectives 1- Learn how communities of practice and wikis can support clinical practice in emergency medicine 2- Learn how a database of open-source and free knowledge tools could support your ED 3- Learn about the evolution of knowledge translation in the era of the of the Semantic Web

Speaker: Fiona Handley, senior lecturer in learning and teaching, University of Brighton. This session will explore the University of Brightonโs digital literacies framework which was launched in 2014. The framework, which is aimed at academic staff, is divided into four categories: learning and teaching, research, communication and collaboration, and administration. The session explores the strengths of a framework approach, the challenges it presents, but also the ongoing opportunities it offers compared to other digital literacy and capability initiatives.

Living in the time of abundance of information, publications, and social networks is a great opportunity for software engineering researchers. They can find much information about many projects, various relevant publications, and other researchers who did a work on a related topic. Yet, availability of (open source) software freely/publicly available is a great convenience for many. All this definitely opens up many exciting opportunities for a higher-quality and more creative research. However, this wealth causes another (bigger) challengeโ how to manage and comprehend all that data and interactions and be able to contextualize the data to the research needs at hand? In this talk, we will discuss a need for the development of new-generation personal information management systems for software engineering research. The key requirement is ubiquitous access, delivery and publishing of research data from โanywhere and anytime.โ Through a more organic integration of software engineering tools, publication sources, collaborative and community research tools, researchers should be able to able to build their own personal research environments, which satisfy their personal needs, preferences, formal obligations, and life-long objectives. To illustrate some promising directions for personal research environments, we will discuss different examples built on principles of the Social Web, the Semantic Web, technology-enhanced learning, and computer-supported cooperative work.

Modern knowledge work, such as that done by Extension professionals, often calls for collaborative efforts to address complex issues from a variety of angles. Using technology to facilitate collaboration can allow teams to span geographical boundaries, work at different times, easily share information, foster frequent interaction, expand the teamโs expertise, and reduce costs. However, collaboration within virtual spaces is different than traditional face-to-face work and requires consideration of a variety of factors: comfort with and access to the technology, leadership and coordination of the team, scheduling across time zones and institutions, etc. In this webinar we will highlight published research about technology-facilitated collaboration and discuss its benefits, challenges, and factors that contribute to success. This foundational webinar will set the stage for subsequent webinars that will address specific tools and techniques that can be used to foster the success of collaborative work using technology.

As institutions learn more about how to sustainably tweak (customise) their Moodle environments to better service their unique needs, we are starting to see some very interesting examples of practice emerge; oneโs that will not necessarily be seen on the Moodle Docs, Tracker, or Forums. One of these is the advent of a new course format developed by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) called the Flexi Format. This new format allows both 'Week' sections and 'Topic' sections to appear in the same course. Included in this format is also two new โsectionsโ called โGetting Startedโ and 'Assessment' aligned with a customized navigation block. Assessment, for example, has built-in smarts, providing the ability to draw in data via an abstraction layer from the Student Management System; 'People Soft', along with other automated features. However, this could be adapted to draw data from other system, such as Student One, Callista, etc. This presentation will demonstrate how this new course format looks and works, and will provide a rationale as to why it is been developed, but more importantly, why it has been seen as such a great way forward by many academics at USQ. In simple terms, it has given academic staff the ability to provide a more unique/customised experience for their students, while at the same time it allows the university to provide more consistency in how these courses will appear to students.

Presentation at EMTACL10, http://www.ntnu.no/ub/emtacl/ Guus van den Brekel Central medical library, UMCG Virtual Research Networks: towards Research 2.0 In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks โ with its extensive collaborative possibilities โ will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. The network โ evolved by technology โ is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's รกnd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

Through its flexible model of knowledge and learning services, NASA meets the development needs of practitioners, project teams, and the organization. By linking business strategy to knowledge and learning approaches, NASA provides an integrated and systematic approach to address critical skillsets for technical, leadership, and business capabilities. This approach optimizes individual competence, project team performance, and organizational learning in a way that enables NASA to meet the changing needs of its workforce. SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY Dr. Jon Boyle has served in several capacities in public and private sector organizations, from industrial production lines and overseas military combat units to multinational corporations, NASA flight facilities, and academia. He possesses expertise in Cognitive Neurosciences, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Knowledge Management, Group Processes, Human Resources and Workforce Development, Business Strategy, Technology-Enabled Learning, Research and Development, and Process Improvement. Jon currently serves as the NASA Agency Deputy Chief Knowledge Officer (InuTeq), where he contributes to the development of the overall NASA Technical Workforce through Knowledge Services. He earned a B.A. in Psychology and Biology from the University of Southern Maine; a M.Ed. from Boston University; a M.A in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from George Mason University; and a Ph.D. in Human Development from Virginia Tech, as well as participating in diverse training and certifications in technology, project management, quality-related topics, acquisition and procurement, leadership, and coaching. He currently teaches several undergraduate and graduate programs and maintains an active research and publication agenda. Jon lives in the DC Metro area with his wife Allyson, son Zachary, and twin daughters Bevin and Riley. His son Christopher recently returned from Afghanistan where he serves as a Blackhawk Crew Chief in the U.S. Army and is now stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA.
