The LTCI* is a laboratory of Télécom ParisTech (Institut Mines-Télécom, IMT). Established in 1982, LTCI is characterized by its broad coverage of the field of information and communication science and technology (ICT). Its research activities range from the hardware layer (electronics, opto-electronics, system on chip, antennae, microwaves…) to the software layer (systems, algorithms, protocols…). They encompass studies on different kinds of data (audio, video, images, semi-structured data and web content) as well as works on network performance and services, or quantum cryptography issues.

Technological development have altered the way we communicate, learn, think, share, and spread information. Mobile technologies are those that make use of wireless technologies to gain some sort of data. As mobile connectedness continues to spread across the world, the value of employing mobile technologies in the arena of learning and teaching seems to be both self-evident and unavoidable The fast deployment of mobile devices and wireless networks in university campuses makes higher education a good environment to integrate learners-centered m-learning. This paper discusses mobile learning technologies that are being used for educational purposes and the effect they have on teaching and learning methods.

There is a digital revolution happening right before our eyes, the way we communicate is rapidly changing dues to rapid technological advances. Pencil and paper communication is drastically reducing and being replaced with newer communication medium ranging from emails to sms/mms and other instant messaging services. Information/news used to be broadcasted only through official and dedicated channels such as television, radio or newspapers. The technology available today allows every single one of us to be individual information broadcasters whether through text, image or video using our personal connected mobile device. In effect, the current trend shows that video will soon become the most important media on the Internet. While the amount of multimedia content continuously increases there is still progress to be done for automatically understanding multimedia documents in order to provide means to index, search and browse them more effectively. The objectives of this chapter are three-fold. First, we will motivate multimedia content modeling research in the current technological context. Secondly, a broad state of the art will provide the reader with a brief overview of the methodological trends of the field. Thirdly, a bird eye view of the various research themes I have supervised and/or conducted will be presented and will expose how contextual information has become an important additional source of information for multimedia content understanding.

This article summarizes the reflections of a scientist active in optical communication about the need of ethical considerations in technological research. An optimistic definition of ethics, being the art to make good use of technology, is proposed that emphasizes the necessarily involvement of not only technologists but also experts in humanity. The paper then reviews briefly the research activities of a Dutch national consortium where the author had been involved. This mainly academic research dealt with advanced approaches for ultrafast communication. In the next section an assessment is given of the potential impact of the technological results on society. In order to emphasize the positive aspects and counteract the negative ones, three steps are proposed: (i) create conditions for a dialogue between experts in ethics and technology; (ii) work out scenarios for the introduction of new techniques in society; (iii) anticipate opportunities and threats. Finally the conclusions are presented.

In this paper, we present our vision of MobiliNet. MobiliNet is a user-oriented approach for optimising mobility chains with the goal of providing innovative mobility across different types of mobility providers – from personal short range battery powered mobility aids over different types of public transports (e.g. buses, short distance train networks) to personal mobility means (e.g. car sharing). Our vision for MobiliNet is based on a social network- like system that is not limited to human participants. By including vehicles, corporations, parking spaces and other objects and spaces, the system could make traveling more comfortable and less stressful, and finally more efficient for the travellers. MobiliNet allows high-level trip planning, but also pays attention to other important details of the supported means of transportation. Especially for user groups with special needs, MobiliNet actively supports self-determined mobility. Thus enables again an active participation of this user group in in social life. Besides supporting travellers, the system could also create new business opportunities for transport associations and car sharing corporations.

The Project Urban Prototyping was intended as a preparatory exploration to develop the proposal for the establishment of the Laboratory for Urban Prototyping. The project explored the possibilities to establish a collaborative environment for design, planning and management of climate smart urban areas by the application of advanced virtual prototyping technologies. A series of 4 workshops were organised: Workshop I Virtual Prototyping, Workshop II Collaborative Planning and Design, Workshop III Planning and Design Process and Workshop IV Integrated Resource and Urban Modeling for Sustainable Liveability. In Workshop I Virtual Prototyping (VP) international experts presented concepts of VP from different fields of application.
