1. In addition to the other Focus
Group
I started off by showing them the music
magazine called Vibe, it’s a very successful
RnB magazine and wanted some opinions on
what the girls liked and didn't.
2. The Questions I asked:
• Once I had asked the girls the questions such as :
• 1) what artists do you like and listen to within this RnB music magazine?
• 2) Is RnB the genre of music you are most interested in compared to the
others?
• 3) What features do you like on the front cover?
• 4) What features do you like on the double page spread?
• 5) What is appealing to you about the contents page?
• 6) Do you like the colours that have been used throughout the magazine?
• 7) Do you feel that it shows a clear representation of the RnB genre?
• 8) What do you think about the fonts used on the front cover, contents
page and double page spread?
• I then received answers and feedback from them.
3. Question One
• As I asked the questions, I went round and asked each
individual one by one so that I could take notes and get
a clear and focused answer from each person.
• 1) what artists do you like and listen to within this RnB
music magazine of Vibe?
• Charlie answered saying: ‘I like artists such as Drake,
Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Ashanti and many others that
feature within this RnB music. I like reading RnB music
magazines because I can see interviews of my favourite
artists as well as find out tour dates for upcoming
concerts in the year’
4. The answers
• Betsi answered this question saying: ‘ I listen
to quite a lot of Drake, Trey songz, Ciara and
T.I. I listen to loads of RnB artists you’d be here
forever if I named them all. I love the genre of
RnB I think its great to listen too, I like the
music videos artists make RnB artists are
always so creative with their settings when
making a music video.’
5. The answers
• Cherisse then answered the same question
saying: ‘ I love this RnB music magazine it
offers artists that are current and in the charts
but also old artists that never get old, I think
its good they show a variety of artists. RnB is
the only genre I listen too there are so many
artists to listen to I never get bored, I can
listen to it wherever I am or whatever mood
I’m in.’
6. Question Two
• 2) Is RnB the genre of music you are most
interested in compared to the others?
• Charlie: 'Yes, I always have been really. I like the
artists that feature in that genre as well as the
type of music it provides. Its very upbeat, urban
and modern but it also offers slow songs as well,
so I listen to it whatever mood I'm in.’
• Betsi: ‘Yeah it is, There are so many different
artists to listen to with different varieties of song
choices I never get enough.’
• Cherisse: ‘It is yes, I don’t remember a time
where I haven’t, I just love this genre of music, I
think everyone does.’
7. Question Three
• 3) What features do you like on the front cover?
• Charlie: ‘ I like how they use quite a big space for the main image it shows
that the artist featured on the front is important. I also like the colours,
there very modern and urban. The layout they have used is quite simple
but I think its effective.
• Betsi: ‘ The features I like are the big bold lettering of the name of the
magazine, how much room they give the main image it automatically
draws your eye. The colours are nice and suitable for the genre, and the
layout is also structured well, I think its very modern.’
• Cherisse: ‘ The front cover is always the most important for me, It has to
be really eye catching to make me want to read it and this magazine really
does that for me, it always has the big, bold lettered name at the top and
then the main image of the artist featured inside almost taking up the
whole page with text around it, making it look really modern and urban
just like the genre’
8. Question Four
• 4) What features do you like on the double page spread?
• Charlie: ‘ I like the layout of the page, I like how the main
artist has a page of its own and then the interview is on the
opposite side of the page. The colours are repeated
throughout the magazine which I think is effective as it’s all
the same.
• Betsi: ‘ Yeah, I agree with Charlie, I like the layout and how
the artist gets its own page, Its modern and detailed, I like
reading the double page spreads in Vibe.
• Cherisse: ‘ This is my favourite section of the magazine, I
love reading about artists especially when it’s written as an
interview. I also agree with what the girls said, I like the
colours and also the layout.
9. Question Five
• Charlie: ‘ Vibe’s content pages are always pretty simple and basic,
But I like it. The way they structure the ‘Con’ and then ‘Tents’
beneath it is really effective, it looks modern and really fits in with
the RnB look of the magazine. The fonts they use as well are
different to what is inside the magazine which makes it stand out.
• Betsi: ‘ I like how Vibe lay out their content pages, its very simplistic
but yet draws in my attention. I like how the content page also
features a large image of the featured artist.
• Cherisse: ‘ the Colours Vibe use are always good, simple yet draw
my attention in. I like the layout of the content page as Its not too
busy on the page, it gets to the point. I agree with the girls as well
that Vibe always feature a large image of the artist which will be
featuring inside.
10. Question Six
• 6) Do you like the colours that have been used throughout the
magazine?
• Charlie: ‘ Yes, there very simple colours but because they use the
majority of the same colours over and over it makes the magazine
look classy, modern and effective as it becomes a common feature.
• Betsi: ‘ Yeah, I agree with Charlie, as you read the magazine often
you get used to the colours so it becomes a repeated feature. I also
like how the colours are so simple yet they look effective within
Vibe.
• Cherisse: ‘ I think the colours are great. There simple as the girls
have said but they fit with everything on the pages so well, it all
comes together to make the magazine look modern and successful
in what they do.
11. Question Seven
• 7) Do you feel that it shows a clear representation of the RnB
genre?
• Charlie: ‘ Yes, I do feel like it shows a clear representation of the
RnB genre as the colours reflect the feel and mood of RnB music.
These colours such as greys, whites, blacks, reds, are all colours that
I would associate with the genre of RnB.
• Betsi: ‘ I like these colours and if someone asked me what colours I
would think of when asked about RnB music, these colours to come
to mind so yes, I do think a clear representation has been shown
here.
• Cherisse: ‘The colours used are all colours like said before are
colours that I would relate to the genre of RnB and I think that they
are modern and sophisticated colours to use in a music magazine it
doesn’t make it look tacky.
•
12. Question Eight
• 8) What do you think about the fonts used on the front cover,
contents page and double page spread?
• Charlie: ‘ The fonts used on all three pieces are all fairly simple fonts
yet they all come together within the magazine to look very
effective, giving the magazine a sense of class. Most of the fonts are
all repeated throughout the magazine so everything looks neat and
keeps the constant, ongoing representation of RnB.
• Betsi: ‘ I like all the fonts that are used I think that Vibe have chosen
good fonts because their not too fancy but yet they keep a
structured and simple layout.
• Cherisse: ‘ Vibe chose fonts that are ideal to fit in with a music
magazine, it all looks RnB in my opinion. I like how the fonts are
repeated through the front cover, content page and double page
spread keeping the structure the same makes it professional.
