		ESL Students “Strategies that work!”
Good Teaching Practices All of us MUST use effective, efficient ESL strategies because we may have L2 learners that we teach in English at some time in the day!!
What to watch for… Cooperative learning fully implemented—INTERDEPENDENCE!! (just  because they sit together, not coop learning) Teachers assigned to teach reading groups with ESL students must understand ESL methodology! Regrouping and placement of ESL students—place aggressively so they are exposed to a higher level of language. Provide support and scaffolding and have high expectations!!
Teachers must… Speak more slowly but at a natural rate. Enunciate clearly. Use simpler, shorter sentences. Rephrase, repeat, clarify. Emphasize new vocabulary, idioms or abstract concepts.
Giving Directions Give directions in “ESL” Break down complex tasks into simpler steps. Stop and ask questions of the students.
Building Vocabulary Sound (solid) investment Before & during each lesson
Keys to Unlocking Vocabulary and Concept Development Use gestures, body language & visuals (pictures and realia) Point to visuals Use labels to make connections Display vocabulary, messages, etc. around the room and school. Use students’ ideas Role play, use physical activities
Student Interaction Buddy Buzz Think-Pair-Share Put your heads together Teach each other Turn to your partner Shadow Talk
Shadow Talk Dominant English Student states answer. English Acquirer says the answer with the Dominant English Student English Acquirer answers without help from Dominant English Student.
Checking for Understanding “Wh…” questions “Proof” questions “Funny” questions “Confirmation” checks “Tell me more”
