29. SECRETS TO SUCCESS IN MATH PERFORMANCE
STRATEGY:
Children learn a pattern, count
it orally, finger hop on blank
boards, and then also hop on
imaginary boards on the
floor. This system helps children
visualize multiplication and see
it's patterns.

30. Hopping games to reinforce and practise arithmetic skills
Number Sequencing – Hop on each number in order from 1 through to 5,
then 1 through to 10 then 1 through to 15, then 20 and then 25.
Odd/Even Numbers – Hop on the odd or even numbers in order.
Pre-subtraction – Hop on each number from 5 through to 1, then 10
through to 1, then 15, 20 and 25 through to 1.
Addition – Start at 1 then add 2 each time, then 3, 4 etc. Repeat starting at
2, then 3 etc.
Subtraction – Start at 10 then subtract 2 each time, then 3, then 4. Repeat
starting at 15, 20 and 25.
Times Tables – Hop through the 2, 3, 4 and 5 times tables.

36. Using manipulative materials in
teaching mathematics will help
students learn:
• to relate real world situations to mathematic symbolism.
• to work together cooperatively in solving problems.
• to discuss mathematical ideas and concepts.
• to verbalize their mathematic thinking.
• that there are many different ways to solve problems.
• that mathematic problems can be symbolized in many
different ways.
37. manipulatives
two color counters
unifix cubes
thermometers
tangrams
coins
magnetic numberscalculators
geoboards
base ten blocks
shapes
scales and balances
pattern blocks
clocks
38. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Pocket chart with number cards 0-
100
Students can increase their
understanding of
numbers by identifying numbers,
number patterns, counting, skip
counting, etc..
39. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
One-inch blocks
These blocks can be used to
measure, count,
create and extend patterns.
40. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Large geometric solids
The plastic shapes illustrate relationships
between area, volume, shape, form and
size.
41. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Geoboards
Geoboards are used in the
exploration and recognition of
shapes, designs, spatial
relationships, angles,
fractions, area, perimeter, symmetry,
and coordinates.
42. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Two sided counters
These math manipulatives are great for
teaching
number sense and number operations.
43. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Fraction circles
Fraction circles teach students about fractions
and their relationships. When young children begin
using them
they see, feel, and compare equivalent fractions and
as they
get older the fraction terms become meaningful
from their
previous play experiences.
44. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Base ten blocks
Base ten blocks can be used by students to
learn
basic mathematical concepts including addition,
subtraction, number sense, place value and
counting.
45. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Unifix Cubes
Unifix cubes are used for patterning,
sorting,
counting, addition ,subtraction,
multiplication
and measurement.
46. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Wooden blocks
These blocks can be used when
teaching geometry, symmetry, number
sense,
counting, and patterns.
47. Top 10 Math Manipulatives
Pattern Blocks
Pattern blocks can be used to teach
everything
from number sense, sorting, shape
identification, graphing, fractions and
more.

64. Multiplication “BINGO”
1. Hand out multiplication
sheets to everybody
2. Explain the game
3. Call out the numbers to
the students
4. The first person to say
“BINGO” will win but
you have to get it
horizontally or vertically
5. If two people say
“BINGO” at the same
time the person who has
the most in the row or
column will win
“BINGO”
Materials and Setup
Skills needed to know
division
Time to play 3 rounds
Max # players 19, 1 host
66. Number Hunt
1. You get
multiplication
facts like 2 x 6 and
someone tries to
find the answer
somewhere around
the room if they
don’t find a
correct answer
they try to find
others.
• Cards with numbers
hidden around the
room.
• Needs to know
multiplication facts
and has to have
good memory.
• 10 -15 minutes
• 4-8 people. Groups
of 2
67. Measurement Hunt
1. Steps (In Measurement
hunt everybody will
partner up with ONE other
child and He/She will hold
the answer key and ruler.
The answer keys will be in
different orders so no one
will cheat and you
measure the areas that
the answer key says to
measure and if the object
is a certain measurement
for instance 8 and a half
and on the card it says 8
and a half=rock then go to
the rock.
• Materials and Setup
Garden/rulers
• Skills needed to play
Measurement
• Time to play
Until someone wins
• Max # players 20
68. Area and Perimeter Hunt
1. Grab a ruler and a tape
measurer
2. You can pair up if you want
to
3. Find objects with the given
areas and perimeters
4. Area,5 sq. inches
5. Perimeter,1 foot
6. Area,20 sq. inches
7. Perimeter, 3 feet
8. Area,14 sq. inches
9. Then, bring them back to
your desk and share with
the class
• Need a ruler and tape
measurer
• You will have 10-15
minutes
• Whole class
