Anticipatory Set
Pretend your grandmother lives on a farm, and has 9 cats.
How many legs would there be altogether?

How would you solve for the answer?
Direction Instruction

The survey was taken by one hundred 3rd graders on preference of repeated addition or multiplication. As student
became more comfortable processing multiplication using repeated addition they preferred multiplication to
repeated addition. Students realized multiplication was a faster and easier way to solve for the answer.

On the next four slides are the number cards for students to build
repeated addition models to process multiplication.

Note: Slides can be printed out, laminated, and cut apart. Students
can be partnered up, for less cards needed.

  • 33. 3rd Grade Survey Repeated Addition Multiplication 100 75 50 25 0 July August September October The survey was taken by one hundred 3rd graders on preference of repeated addition or multiplication. As student became more comfortable processing multiplication using repeated addition they preferred multiplication to repeated addition. Students realized multiplication was a faster and easier way to solve for the answer.
  • 34. Repeated addition is Multiplication!
  • 38. Independent Practice-Activity On the next four slides are the number cards for students to build repeated addition models to process multiplication. Note: Slides can be printed out, laminated, and cut apart. Students can be partnered up, for less cards needed.
