are there ?
Competitions may be run
in several different ways:
• Knock-out
• League
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 16
17. Knock-out
This is quite a simple format.
After each match
the winning team goes through
to the next round
and the losing team is eliminated
(knocked out).
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 17
18. Knock-out: Seeding
Teams or players may be seeded (ranked)
to keep the top performers apart
until the later rounds.
This happens at Wimbledon
where the number one and two seeds
are kept apart until the final.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 18

some competitors
may receive a bye

to the next round
so the numbers even up.

22. Knock-out
Advantages:
• Quick and easy to organise.
• Can allow many entries, as half
are “knocked out” every round.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 22
23. Knock-out
Disadvantages:
• If you lose in round 1
you only get one game.
• You may need qualifying rounds
or to award byes
to get the numbers right.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 23
24. League
Many competitions are run as leagues.
Every team plays every other team,
often twice, “home & away”,
during the competition or “season”.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 24
25. League
Advantages:
• The league may be divided into divisions
to accommodate a large number of
competitors.
• Everyone has the same number of
games.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 25
26. League
Advantages:
• Fixtures can be arranged in advance
because you know how many games you
have, and who you are playing.
This is especially important for big matches
where tickets and transport
may have to be organised.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 26
27. League
Disadvantages:
• It can take a long time to complete all
the fixtures.
• Postponed fixtures can lead to “fixture
congestion”.
• It can takes several seasons to work your
way up from lower divisions.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 27
28. Combination Events
Competitions can be run using two systems,
Small leagues of four or five
to decide who goes through
to the knock-out stage.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 28
29. Combination Events
Advantages:
• Everyone is guaranteed several games.
• Teams may have more than one chance
to qualify for the next stage.
• Many teams can be involved.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 29
30. Combination Events
Disadvantages:
• Competitions can take a long time to
complete.
• There may be games between teams
where neither has a chance to qualify for
the next stage.
Neeraj Kumar Mehra, Lecturer( Health
2/21/2012 & Physcial Education),DIET Daryaganj 30
