• Let's move into our HISTORY TIMELINE. This
time we are going to learn about ROMAN
HISPANIA. It is said when the Iberian
Peninsula was inhabited (habitada) by the
Romans.

• A big part of Europe was inhabited by the
Romans during this time. It was the Great
Roman Empire.
4. The Roman Hispania
• In 218 B.C.Romans defeated (derrotar) the
Carthaginians in a war, so they started to
control the Mediterranean Sea.
• They Completed the conquest of the Iberian
Peninsula in 19 B.C. Because of the resistance
of people in the interior.

ROMAN RULE:
• The peninsula became a part of the Roman
Empire. It was called Hispania.
• Inhabitants adopted Roman customs, and they
were ruled by Roman law (llei).
• They spoke Latin.
• The governor was a Roman person.
• The Iberian leaders became the Roman
Aristocratic class, and part of the government.

ORGANISATION OF HISPANIA
• The Romans divided Hispania into provinces.
• Each province was ruled by a governor.
HISPANO-ROMAN SOCIETY
• There were 2 groups of people:
• Free people: they had right (drets) and
could take part in government.
• Slaves: they had no rights.

FREE PEOPLE SLAVES
Very rich men and women:
• Merchants
• Landowners
• Families from Rome
Humble people:
• Craftsmen
• Small merchants and
farmers.
Owned by another person.
• They worked on the land.
• They worked in domestic
service.
• They worked as a gladiators
at the circus.

ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE
• Romans were very good at Architecture,
transport and communication. They
constructed:
• Theatres, circuses, amphitheatres and
thermal baths for people’s entertainment.
• Triumphal arches and columns were built
to commemorate important events such as
victory in a battle.

Romans were excellent builders.
They used two new materials for
building: cement and concrete.
Concrete is a mixture of
stones, cement and sand.

ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE
• Ports, bridges and aqueducts were built to
improve life in the cities.

• Romans also built stones roads between cities
of the peninsula and between Hispania and
other parts of the Empire.
• To decorate floors and walls,
the Romans used paintings
or made mosaics.
13. The Roman Hispania
END OF THE ROMAN RULE:
• After about 400 A.D. Germanic tribes from the
central and northern Europe invaded Hispania
and conquered the Territory. The Roman lost
the control of the peninsula.
