ENVISIONING THE FUTURE IN EDUCATION
SXSWEDU 2023
This envisioning meetup is inspired by the work of
Warren Ziegler in his published work Envisioning the Future
“Persons who do not create their own images of a future
world are destined to live out somebody else’s images.”

CONCERNS ABOUT EDUCATION
Concerns: a situation that causes you to worry or be disturbed; it
becomes a focal point of dissatisfaction.
Describing your concerns: Be specific and detailed.
List your concerns: as many concerns or dissatisfactions about
education or teaching as come to mind
ENVISIONING
Vision: The product of creative imagination and foresight.
Imaging: The act of generating images and bringing them into conscious awareness.
Envisioning Involves: Imaging Intending Focused Listening Discerning Action
Indicators of Images : Concrete Observable Describable
THINKING
Look within yourself and examine the concerns you have voiced.
What image of a school that nurtures both students and teachers
do you see as you take a mental leap into the future?
Write down the words, phrases, sentences and pictures you are
thinking about that describe your image of this school in the future.
(These descriptions are indicators of your image)
PUBLISH YOUR VISION
Concern: is the one which you identified as primary.
Central theme: is its main idea, its focus.
Focused image: A sense of the future; its power forces you to commit to achieving it.
Indicators: Are the specific signs which reveal that the image is perceivable.
Consequences: The results both beneficial and harmful, of the vision becoming real.
Summary: Summarize the elements of your vision both detailed and succinctly.
