4. Battle of Caporetto
● The attack on Italy was delayed for two days because
of bad weather
● On October 24, 1917 when the Central Powers started
their attack on Italy, they smothered the valley with
poisonous gas. Luckily the Italian soldiers had gas
masks, but that would only protect them from the gas
for two hours or less. So all the soldiers fled and 500600 soldiers were still killed...

Then later on that night they attacked the Italian side
again and peppered them with mortar fire.
The Central Powers didn’t stop there. After that they
opened fire on the Italians with 2200 pieces of artillery
and detonated two large mines under the Italians strong
points bordering the valley. And the Central Powers
gained access into the Italian side.
6. The Aftermath
● At the end of the battle the central powers had won
● 10,000 Italian soldiers were killed, 30,000 were
wounded, and 265,000 were captured
● 70,000 soldiers from the central powers were killed
and wounded
● This battle was one of the most decisive battles of
World War I because even though the Italians had
50,000 more soldiers than the Central Powers they still
had more artillery and more of a game plan. And
therefore the Italians had major losses in equipment...
