Green IT or green computing is the
study and practice of using computing
resources in ways that help reduce
energy and operating costs, enable
sustainable business practices and
reduce the environmental impact of IT
practices in the larger community

• Rising energy costs

Cloud Computing
• Cloud computing refers to computing
  services provided over the Internet (or
  “cloud”), whereby shared resources,
  software, and information are provided to
  computers and other devices on demand
• Pros: fast start-up & business agility, low
  entry cost with on demand pricing
• Cons: highly dependent on provider,
  privacy and security risks

  – Resource sharing minimizes wasted resource
  – Operating servers at higher utilization rates
• Examples:
  – Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2):
    Rent virtual-machine instances & hardware
  – Google’s App Engine: Web development
    platform to build and host Web applications
Virtualization
• Virtualization means to create a virtual
  version of a device or resource, such as a
  server, storage device or network where
  the framework divides the resource into
  one or more execution environments
• Pros: server consolidation, resource
  flexibility, portability & disaster recovery
• Cons: unpredictable performance, risky to
  put multiple systems on one host

  – Cut power demand (electricity for powering
    and cooling) through consolidation
  – Get more out of existing resources and
    reduce costs by shrinking number of servers
• Examples:
  – VMware Server Virtualization: Partitions a
    physical server into multiple virtual machines
  – Microsoft Virtual PC: Run multiple operating
    systems on a single physical computer

• Solution to the data center energy crisis
• Higher performance servers that require
  less energy consumption
• Some contain internal cooling technology
  or smart sensors that monitor heat
  created by the server and adjust fans
• Unified server cabinet for clustering apps
• Modular tower can add processing power
  and memory capacity as needed

1. Evaluate energy efficiency (monitor & reduce)
2. Redesign cooling system (concentrate cooling)
3. Reconsider redundancy (operate on current needs)
4. Use adjustable equipment (scalable and modular)

  • 3. Green IT Green IT or green computing is the study and practice of using computing resources in ways that help reduce energy and operating costs, enable sustainable business practices and reduce the environmental impact of IT practices in the larger community

Reasons to Adopt Green IT • Broader interest and emphasis on corporate social responsibility (CSR) • Rising energy costs • Attract and retain customers – Increasing public awareness – Positive environmental brand image • Government agencies have implemented standards and regulations that promote green computing

Cloud Computing • Cloud computing refers to computing services provided over the Internet (or “cloud”), whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand • Pros: fast start-up & business agility, low entry cost with on demand pricing • Cons: highly dependent on provider, privacy and security risks

Green Benefits of the “Cloud” • Green Benefits – Increased efficiencies (power efficiency) – Resource sharing minimizes wasted resource – Operating servers at higher utilization rates • Examples: – Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2): Rent virtual-machine instances & hardware – Google’s App Engine: Web development platform to build and host Web applications

Virtualization • Virtualization means to create a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device or network where the framework divides the resource into one or more execution environments • Pros: server consolidation, resource flexibility, portability & disaster recovery • Cons: unpredictable performance, risky to put multiple systems on one host

Green Benefits of Virtualization • Green Benefits – Cut power demand (electricity for powering and cooling) through consolidation – Get more out of existing resources and reduce costs by shrinking number of servers • Examples: – VMware Server Virtualization: Partitions a physical server into multiple virtual machines – Microsoft Virtual PC: Run multiple operating systems on a single physical computer

Green Servers and Benefits • Solution to the data center energy crisis • Higher performance servers that require less energy consumption • Some contain internal cooling technology or smart sensors that monitor heat created by the server and adjust fans • Unified server cabinet for clustering apps • Modular tower can add processing power and memory capacity as needed
  • 13. 10 Steps to Green Data Center 1. Evaluate energy efficiency (monitor & reduce) 2. Redesign cooling system (concentrate cooling) 3. Reconsider redundancy (operate on current needs) 4. Use adjustable equipment (scalable and modular) 5. Virtualize your storage (remap apps for efficiency) 6. Use ENERY STAR-rated appliances 7. Donate or recycle legacy servers (reuse parts) 8.
