SHOW PROJECT
My personal role and contribution
           Tara Cox
INITIAL RESEARCH
āž” I personally looked at a variety of
ways in which people showed their work,
   this included art exhibitions, street
performance and live gigs at venues.

āž” I looked at methods of show in
Cambridge, because I felt this was more
personal as opposed to methods of
show in general, and I had also seen
most of these street performances so
   could reļ¬‚ect on them personally.

āž” While these methods of show held
more personal and physical relationships
with the client, as well as more personal
 audience feedback, these methods of
show were inevitably not the most
                  popular.

āž” However, I found that the most
popular way for a practitioner to show
their work is through the internet and
through television, due to the global level
of distribution and the amount of
           audience feedback.
WEB SHOW RESEARCH
āž” I then looked at research āž” Most web shows had one main
for web shows on the protagonist, and a series of 3 or 4
internet, after research on this friends which had different
being the most effective way characteristics.
        of showing work.
āž” Web series usually have a speciļ¬c
āž”I looked at web series such website, and merchandise available
as ā€˜The Guildā€™, ā€˜We Need on this website. The videos for the
Girlfriendsā€™ and ā€˜Living With series are posted on Youtube/Vimeo
the Inļ¬delsā€™ The web shows as well for further distribution and
were between 2 - 3 minutes have fan pages on Facebook.
       long, had certain
characteristics such as āž” These are the characteristics
humour, shot type and that I hoped to bring to our own
        character type. web series.

āž” I learnt that while most
web shows featured humour,
not all of them had to, I
looked at a web series called
  Prom Queen which was a
horror series, and still had the
 same effect on the audience
   and the same popularity.
ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE
      BLOGGING
āž” Using a blog enabled me to keep a neat and chronological
record of my work while I work throughout the project, which
                 showed clearly my research path.

āž” It also enabled me to post links to videos, pictures and other
websites which I wouldnā€™t have been able to do if I had used a non
               online source of evidence research.

āž” Using an online blog also meant I could access my work
anywhere that had internet. This was much easier keeping my
project all in one place as opposed to have a folder etc which I
would have had to take everywhere with me.

āž” Using the internet also meant that work at home and at college
was much easier to complete because things could just be typed
up quickly each day and the work would slowly add up.

āž” It enabled me to add slideshows, pictures and videos to
my text work in order to illustrate the work and what I did,
and personally I think this really helped.
ORGANISATION
āž” The organisation of the roles was fairly straightforward. The class
was split into two groups after a while, class meeting and we were
to create two different web series. Our web series was called
ā€˜Linesā€™ after the idea that people in detention write lines.

āž” The other groupā€™s web series was called Detention Deļ¬cit, but
nonetheless we stuck to the same brief, using the same rough
story line, the same minutes for the show and the same number of
characters. We had a different script etc so there were some clear
                   differences between the two.

We each had a clear role in the project, and
had to keep a record of all our progress,
which is what we used the blogs for. We
had roles such as director, actors,
                                                                           marketing, production etc.
MY PERSONAL JOBS
                         Marketing
āž” My ļ¬rst personal job was to do the marketing. This meant all the
publication of the shows, including all social networking, so the
facebook updates, emails, the twitter feeds, the myspace updates
and the youtube replies to comments. This was a pretty large role
and I felt comfortable promoting the project.

āž” You can see some of the
                                      screenshots of the publicity I
                                       created, including updates,
                                       feeds, video uploads etc. I
                                         also created a facebook
                                       group for Lines, which you
can see to the right. Overall,
I think my role in marketing
                                         was effective, which are
                                         clearly highlighted in the
                                      online views shown later on.

āž” I posted clear video links to Youtube, which the audience
members can easily access by just clicking the hyperlink. This
meant the amount of views we had were easily increasable and
this worked well because the audience did not have to do a lot
                                                                        to view the episodes.
MY PERSONAL JOBS
                 Advertising
āž” I also had the job of advertising the series, and
personally created all three of these posters with
Tim and distributed them around college to attract
            an audience pre showing.

āž” These posters attracted a big audience before
the showing and i felt had a good impact on the
viewing ļ¬gures of the web series. I personally
thought this role was enjoyable and I thought I got
                    a lot done.
MY PERSONAL JOBS
  Production manager
āž” My main personal role throughout the
project was to be the production manager.
This involved personally ļ¬lling out risk
   assessments, equipment permission
forms, and emails arranging ļ¬lming, cast
etc and what they need to be doing.

āž” This was one of my favourite jobs in the
project because it was quote managerial
and I liked the organisational side of the
                  project.
PLANNING
                content of the web series
āž” The content of the web series was based on research and characteristics of
other web shows, such as humour, shot type etc. Planning involved looking at
various web series such as We Need Girlfriends, The Guild and taking ideas from
these, Mike then wrote our own personal scripts.

āž” We tried to incorporate references into our web series from other TV shows,
which we learnt from web series ā€˜Chad Vaderā€™. We also payed close attention to
character type and had one main character, and some new characters
                       incorporated into each episode.

āž” Our web series ā€˜Linesā€™ is shown below,
incorporating some ideas from the initial
research of web series on the left hand side
                 of this page.
PLANNING
Publicity of thetheseries was series through
āž” The publicity
                of web web mainly advertised
social sites Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, which I played a big
part of publicising the series. Musicians we used in our web series
also advertised the series on their pages.

āž” Main publicity was also through posters advertising each episode
of Lines, which I also personally created with Tim. These helped
publicity as it helped to create a pre episode excitement which
geared the audience towards the launch.

āž” A Facebook event for each launch also really helped publicity
because it made sure social sites reminded the audience when the
launches of the episodes were, as well as emails and reminders
sent by us. You can see these publicity methods clearly highlighted
in the pictures alongside this text.
PUBLICITY
   Distribution of the web series
Distribution of my web series was mainly through video sharing
website Youtube. This was because it allowed the web series to
reach a global audience and had a huge effect on our audience
ļ¬gures as we had some views from abroad.

This level of distribution and an online method helped us further
in the distribution because we meant we could reach a further
audience if the media was just screened on TV or to an
audience, highlighted in my initial research.

āž” In this way, the distribution of the web series reached a
higher level than it would do from an ofļ¬‚ine source of
distribution. The planning of the distribution was planned
initially to be online and therefore we planned the series to
be shown online, and used online methods of advertising,
such as social networking etc, to promote the
                                                                                    programme.

āž” Therefore, the web series was mainly promoted in an
online method as opposed to an ofļ¬‚ine method of
advertising. The distribution of the web series played a big
part in the audience feedback, because posting the series
online meant that we could receive a much higher level of
                                                                      feedback and audience members.
SHOW -Idea to online
                   EPISODE ONE
āž” The idea to online process of Lines was very similar to
professional methods, we ļ¬rst came up with a script, then
created the shot list and storyboard and then ļ¬nally shot the
episode. After shooting was the editing, and then adding the
episode online at the launch time and date.

āž” Overall, the process of the ļ¬rst episode of Lines in my opinion
was very effective, and I think that we as a group did very well
and I personally stuck to my role very well and kept the group
                            organised.

āž” I feel that the overall process from the idea of the ļ¬rst episode
of Lines to online went well, although there were some
disagreement with the group and we agreed on a new director
for episode two, I think overall the process was effective in most
                              cases.
PLANNING EPISODES 2 & 3
                   Ideas to online
āž” Planning of episodes 2 and 3 of Lines were more organised,
detailed and thorough than episode 1, including sticking to the
                        storyboard etc.

āž” Episodes 2 and 3 followed the storyboard and shot list more,
and we included a next time feature in episode 2 to include more
interest, as well as more consistent shots and more attention to
                   detail such as continuity errors.

āž” Posters and advertising was increased so that audience
members were bombarded with news about Lines on Facebook,
Myspace, Twitter and in college due to the posters.

    āž” Overall, plans
      were a lot more
         focused in
     episodes 2 and 3
    and we as a group
      were a lot more
    organised to stick
      to the deadline.
AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK
             Show episode one
āž” Our audience response for the ļ¬rst episode of lines was the
most successful of all the episodes. This may have been due to
the main excitement about the program rather than which
episode was best. We received 746 views in total for episode
one, and this was almost three times higher than the other two
episodes. We also received interest from other countries such
as the USA and spain etc.

āž” However, this is only online
 feedback from youtube etc. For
  general feedback,we received
 some varying feedback, and the
   image on the immediate right
       shows the feedback we
     received from the personal
    feedback session where we
  received non online feedback.
AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK
āž” Episode 2 of Lines Show episode two
 received 240 views in
   total from Youtube,
which was considerably
    less than the ļ¬rst
 episode, but this may
  have been inevitable
and due to excitement
about the launch rather
     than episode 1.

āž” The feedback on the
 immediate right shows
  the feedback we had
from non online sources
      when we held a
    meeting and asked
  audience members to
      give feedback.
āž” This was very
 positive, and the online
   feedback was mainly
positive so i overall think
we did well in terms of
  feedback, despite the
 fact we did not receive
      as many views.
AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK
                Show episode three
āž” For episode 3, we received the least views online but I
personally think that this was due to interest of the web series
dying down more than people disliking the episodes.

āž” I think that episode 3 left the audience on the biggest
cliffhanger and therefore it should have received some more
views, we also had a ā€˜next timeā€™ preview on the end of
episode 2 so in theory we should have received more views
than we got in my opinion.

āž” For non online
  feedback, the
 comments we
 received to the
    right in our
     audience
discussion were
 overall positive
 so I believe the
   assumptions
made above are
 still accurate, I
  overall believe
  we did well in
 terms of views
and publicisation
       overall.
OVERALL REFLECTION
āž” For an overall reļ¬‚ection of the whole project, all three
episodes of Lines were met according to the deadline,
followed the script clearly and received varying audience
                         feedback.

āž” I personally think that I worked my hardest throughout
the project and had many different roles as explained in
this slide show. I worked my hardest to stick to the
deadlines and organised the group the best I can.

āž” I learnt how to work in a team more effectively, and
worked with people i had not previously done so. I
personally learnt that working in a team beneļ¬tted us
because it meant everyone had a clear role and could
āž” I think it gave us more awareness of
                                                                  audiences in projects and also
work on their role rather than trying to do too many things
                                                                   working towards deadlines.
                          at once.

āž” The downsides of the project were the level of views, I
had expected slightly higher. There were a lot of absences
in the group which learnt people had more than one job to
do and this often caused disagreements and arguments
                      within the group.

āž” Nonetheless overall, I personally think that the project
went very well and we worked as a team better than we
had done in any projects previously.

Show keynote Tara Cox

  • 1. SHOW PROJECT My personal role and contribution Tara Cox
  • 2. INITIAL RESEARCH āž” I personally looked at a variety of ways in which people showed their work, this included art exhibitions, street performance and live gigs at venues. āž” I looked at methods of show in Cambridge, because I felt this was more personal as opposed to methods of show in general, and I had also seen most of these street performances so could reļ¬‚ect on them personally. āž” While these methods of show held more personal and physical relationships with the client, as well as more personal audience feedback, these methods of show were inevitably not the most popular. āž” However, I found that the most popular way for a practitioner to show their work is through the internet and through television, due to the global level of distribution and the amount of audience feedback.
  • 3. WEB SHOW RESEARCH āž” I then looked at research āž” Most web shows had one main for web shows on the protagonist, and a series of 3 or 4 internet, after research on this friends which had different being the most effective way characteristics. of showing work. āž” Web series usually have a speciļ¬c āž”I looked at web series such website, and merchandise available as ā€˜The Guildā€™, ā€˜We Need on this website. The videos for the Girlfriendsā€™ and ā€˜Living With series are posted on Youtube/Vimeo the Inļ¬delsā€™ The web shows as well for further distribution and were between 2 - 3 minutes have fan pages on Facebook. long, had certain characteristics such as āž” These are the characteristics humour, shot type and that I hoped to bring to our own character type. web series. āž” I learnt that while most web shows featured humour, not all of them had to, I looked at a web series called Prom Queen which was a horror series, and still had the same effect on the audience and the same popularity.
  • 4. ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE BLOGGING āž” Using a blog enabled me to keep a neat and chronological record of my work while I work throughout the project, which showed clearly my research path. āž” It also enabled me to post links to videos, pictures and other websites which I wouldnā€™t have been able to do if I had used a non online source of evidence research. āž” Using an online blog also meant I could access my work anywhere that had internet. This was much easier keeping my project all in one place as opposed to have a folder etc which I would have had to take everywhere with me. āž” Using the internet also meant that work at home and at college was much easier to complete because things could just be typed up quickly each day and the work would slowly add up. āž” It enabled me to add slideshows, pictures and videos to my text work in order to illustrate the work and what I did, and personally I think this really helped.
  • 5. ORGANISATION āž” The organisation of the roles was fairly straightforward. The class was split into two groups after a while, class meeting and we were to create two different web series. Our web series was called ā€˜Linesā€™ after the idea that people in detention write lines. āž” The other groupā€™s web series was called Detention Deļ¬cit, but nonetheless we stuck to the same brief, using the same rough story line, the same minutes for the show and the same number of characters. We had a different script etc so there were some clear differences between the two. We each had a clear role in the project, and had to keep a record of all our progress, which is what we used the blogs for. We had roles such as director, actors, marketing, production etc.
  • 6. MY PERSONAL JOBS Marketing āž” My ļ¬rst personal job was to do the marketing. This meant all the publication of the shows, including all social networking, so the facebook updates, emails, the twitter feeds, the myspace updates and the youtube replies to comments. This was a pretty large role and I felt comfortable promoting the project. āž” You can see some of the screenshots of the publicity I created, including updates, feeds, video uploads etc. I also created a facebook group for Lines, which you can see to the right. Overall, I think my role in marketing was effective, which are clearly highlighted in the online views shown later on. āž” I posted clear video links to Youtube, which the audience members can easily access by just clicking the hyperlink. This meant the amount of views we had were easily increasable and this worked well because the audience did not have to do a lot to view the episodes.
  • 7. MY PERSONAL JOBS Advertising āž” I also had the job of advertising the series, and personally created all three of these posters with Tim and distributed them around college to attract an audience pre showing. āž” These posters attracted a big audience before the showing and i felt had a good impact on the viewing ļ¬gures of the web series. I personally thought this role was enjoyable and I thought I got a lot done.
  • 8. MY PERSONAL JOBS Production manager āž” My main personal role throughout the project was to be the production manager. This involved personally ļ¬lling out risk assessments, equipment permission forms, and emails arranging ļ¬lming, cast etc and what they need to be doing. āž” This was one of my favourite jobs in the project because it was quote managerial and I liked the organisational side of the project.
  • 9. PLANNING content of the web series āž” The content of the web series was based on research and characteristics of other web shows, such as humour, shot type etc. Planning involved looking at various web series such as We Need Girlfriends, The Guild and taking ideas from these, Mike then wrote our own personal scripts. āž” We tried to incorporate references into our web series from other TV shows, which we learnt from web series ā€˜Chad Vaderā€™. We also payed close attention to character type and had one main character, and some new characters incorporated into each episode. āž” Our web series ā€˜Linesā€™ is shown below, incorporating some ideas from the initial research of web series on the left hand side of this page.
  • 10. PLANNING Publicity of thetheseries was series through āž” The publicity of web web mainly advertised social sites Facebook, Myspace and Twitter, which I played a big part of publicising the series. Musicians we used in our web series also advertised the series on their pages. āž” Main publicity was also through posters advertising each episode of Lines, which I also personally created with Tim. These helped publicity as it helped to create a pre episode excitement which geared the audience towards the launch. āž” A Facebook event for each launch also really helped publicity because it made sure social sites reminded the audience when the launches of the episodes were, as well as emails and reminders sent by us. You can see these publicity methods clearly highlighted in the pictures alongside this text.
  • 11. PUBLICITY Distribution of the web series Distribution of my web series was mainly through video sharing website Youtube. This was because it allowed the web series to reach a global audience and had a huge effect on our audience ļ¬gures as we had some views from abroad. This level of distribution and an online method helped us further in the distribution because we meant we could reach a further audience if the media was just screened on TV or to an audience, highlighted in my initial research. āž” In this way, the distribution of the web series reached a higher level than it would do from an ofļ¬‚ine source of distribution. The planning of the distribution was planned initially to be online and therefore we planned the series to be shown online, and used online methods of advertising, such as social networking etc, to promote the programme. āž” Therefore, the web series was mainly promoted in an online method as opposed to an ofļ¬‚ine method of advertising. The distribution of the web series played a big part in the audience feedback, because posting the series online meant that we could receive a much higher level of feedback and audience members.
  • 12. SHOW -Idea to online EPISODE ONE āž” The idea to online process of Lines was very similar to professional methods, we ļ¬rst came up with a script, then created the shot list and storyboard and then ļ¬nally shot the episode. After shooting was the editing, and then adding the episode online at the launch time and date. āž” Overall, the process of the ļ¬rst episode of Lines in my opinion was very effective, and I think that we as a group did very well and I personally stuck to my role very well and kept the group organised. āž” I feel that the overall process from the idea of the ļ¬rst episode of Lines to online went well, although there were some disagreement with the group and we agreed on a new director for episode two, I think overall the process was effective in most cases.
  • 13. PLANNING EPISODES 2 & 3 Ideas to online āž” Planning of episodes 2 and 3 of Lines were more organised, detailed and thorough than episode 1, including sticking to the storyboard etc. āž” Episodes 2 and 3 followed the storyboard and shot list more, and we included a next time feature in episode 2 to include more interest, as well as more consistent shots and more attention to detail such as continuity errors. āž” Posters and advertising was increased so that audience members were bombarded with news about Lines on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and in college due to the posters. āž” Overall, plans were a lot more focused in episodes 2 and 3 and we as a group were a lot more organised to stick to the deadline.
  • 14. AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK Show episode one āž” Our audience response for the ļ¬rst episode of lines was the most successful of all the episodes. This may have been due to the main excitement about the program rather than which episode was best. We received 746 views in total for episode one, and this was almost three times higher than the other two episodes. We also received interest from other countries such as the USA and spain etc. āž” However, this is only online feedback from youtube etc. For general feedback,we received some varying feedback, and the image on the immediate right shows the feedback we received from the personal feedback session where we received non online feedback.
  • 15. AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK āž” Episode 2 of Lines Show episode two received 240 views in total from Youtube, which was considerably less than the ļ¬rst episode, but this may have been inevitable and due to excitement about the launch rather than episode 1. āž” The feedback on the immediate right shows the feedback we had from non online sources when we held a meeting and asked audience members to give feedback. āž” This was very positive, and the online feedback was mainly positive so i overall think we did well in terms of feedback, despite the fact we did not receive as many views.
  • 16. AUDIENCE RESPONSE AND FEEDBACK Show episode three āž” For episode 3, we received the least views online but I personally think that this was due to interest of the web series dying down more than people disliking the episodes. āž” I think that episode 3 left the audience on the biggest cliffhanger and therefore it should have received some more views, we also had a ā€˜next timeā€™ preview on the end of episode 2 so in theory we should have received more views than we got in my opinion. āž” For non online feedback, the comments we received to the right in our audience discussion were overall positive so I believe the assumptions made above are still accurate, I overall believe we did well in terms of views and publicisation overall.
  • 17. OVERALL REFLECTION āž” For an overall reļ¬‚ection of the whole project, all three episodes of Lines were met according to the deadline, followed the script clearly and received varying audience feedback. āž” I personally think that I worked my hardest throughout the project and had many different roles as explained in this slide show. I worked my hardest to stick to the deadlines and organised the group the best I can. āž” I learnt how to work in a team more effectively, and worked with people i had not previously done so. I personally learnt that working in a team beneļ¬tted us because it meant everyone had a clear role and could āž” I think it gave us more awareness of audiences in projects and also work on their role rather than trying to do too many things working towards deadlines. at once. āž” The downsides of the project were the level of views, I had expected slightly higher. There were a lot of absences in the group which learnt people had more than one job to do and this often caused disagreements and arguments within the group. āž” Nonetheless overall, I personally think that the project went very well and we worked as a team better than we had done in any projects previously.

Editor's Notes
