2. Why do Birds Migrate ??????
• Bird migration is a seasonal journey that happens
twice each year.
• Birds that do not migrate are called resident birds.
• Birds migrate in search of food. Food is abundant in
warm, sunny places and nearly absent in dark,
snowy locations.

3. Which birds migrate ??????
Short Distance Migrants
• Hairy Woodpecker
Middle Distance Migrants
• Blue Jays
Long Distance Migrants
• Arctic Tern

4. Hairy Woodpecker
• The small Hairy Woodpecker is quite territorial.
• It's obvious that woodpeckers like insects...but they
also like sap from Sapsucker holes, sunflower seed,
meat scraps.
• Northernmost populations display irregular and
unpredictable wandering in winter.

5. Blue Jay
• This Bird covers a large part of America and Canada.
• Some individual jays may migrate south in one year,
stay north the next winter
• Young Jays may be more likely to migrate than
adults.

6. Arctic Tern (The Champion)
• Arctic Tern is known as the CHAMPION of
Migration.
• Arctic Terns can travel as much as 24,000 miles
(round trip) each year.
• The Arctic Tern can live to be at least 34 years old, in
which case it may have flown more than 800,000
miles in its lifetime!
