2. Slowly Filling Canada
• Until 1663, Canada was property of the fur trading
company, not royal France until impatience with the slow
growth forced the crown to take control
• In 1627, there were still only 85 colonists in Quebec, and
could not defend against English privateers
• During the 1600s, less than 250 families immigrated, and
of those 12% were women. Despite this, the birth rate in
Canada was higher than in France
• In 1700, there were 15,000 people in Canada, but due to
peace with the Iroquois, by 1750 it grew to 52,000
3. Louisiana
• In 1682, La Salle named the Gulf of Mexico and
surrounding area Louisiana, after King Louis XIV
• Upon returning, he got lost, and La Salle was later
assassinated by the people he settled his colony with in
1687
• The mouth of Mississippi Bay was rediscovered and
colonized in 1699 (Biloxi Bay) and 1702 (Mobile Bay)
• The French connected their two strips of land, Canada
and Louisiana, using the river networks and trading
posts, including a network of Indian allies
