The Historical Background Of Yuri Gagarin
Intro. Yuri Gagarin is still a hero and national icon in the Russia today. His achievement can be
argued as having one of the greatest effects on Soviet culture. The young man who on April 12,
1961 became the first person in space and to circle the Earth in the Vostok rocket. When he returned
to Earth, he was "born twice, there was his original, physical birth in 1934, and his second birth as a
public figure in 1961." This event is also a prime example of how technology has played a crucial
role in modern life. To understand the significance of the Gagarin's accomplishment, it is important
to look at historical background in the Soviet Space program and supporting individuals such as
Sergei Korolev that helped in culminating Gagarin's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soviet rocket development can be credited to Korolev's. His contribution of the R–7 rocket is
arguably the most important innovation of the entire Soviet Space program. Gagarin would not have
flown into space without Korolev; "a genius, unmatched by the engineers at NASA." After the
successful launching of Sputnik, the Soviets began to consider using the R–7 to launch the first live
organism in space; a dog named Layka. It "required Korolev to modify the structure of the R–7 to
encompass a small cylinder." The successful first test of the combination of capsule and rocket
cemented opinions that Korolev's R–7 was the only method to get a human into space. It also
demonstrated what the Soviets eventually wanted which was launch a man in space. And in 1960,
Korolev submitted his proposal for a human to fly in Space. When Sergei Korolev was promoted to
Chief Designer of the Soviet Space program, he became colleagues with Gagarin because "Gagarin
made a good impression by asking pertinent questions." Korolev's relationship with Gagarin was
very close, initially taking him under his wing calling him "my little eagle." Interestingly, Korolev
was unsure that Gagarin could

Russia And The Soviet Union
Russia had many complications before Mikhail Gorbachev came into power for the Soviet Union.
During 1939 through 1945, Russian took part in World War II heavily and were led by Dictator
Joseph Stalin. Following the war, Russia was in a nuclear arms race with America, riding on
everyone's fear of there being a World War III and a nuclear war. Post World War II Russia and the
rest of the Soviet Union had very poor living conditions due to the mass of poverty. In 1962, the
Cuban Missile Crisis took place, which was also known as the October Crisis. This was when
American President John F. Kennedy was informed that there were Soviet nuclear–tipped missiles
in Cuba where he then made a deal with Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev where America would
not invade Cuba as long as the Soviet Union withdrew its missiles. Following this was the Brezhnev
Era, Soviet Union circa 1964 through 1982, in the Soviet Union.
The Brezhnev Era is the time in the Soviet Union that Leonid Brezhnev was in power of Russia and
the Soviet Union from October 1964 through November 1982. During this era, the Soviet Union
began with a high economic growth and prosperity but then it ended in a weaker Soviet Union with
a social, political and economic lack of progress. Nikita Khrushchev was President before Brezhnev
but he was kicked out of office due to his lack of accomplishing his set goals. During the Brezhnev
Era, the leadership style was known as "collective leadership" which would continue through

Aspects And Effects Of The Space Race
Brooks Brumby Mr. Hubbard November 17, 2017 The Space Race: Aspects and Effects The Space
Race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States to see which nation could
achieve spaceflight dominance before the other. The Race began on August 2, 1955 and ended
nearly 40 years later in December of 1991. The Space Race began because of two major factors that
would carry it until its end. The Soviet Union's announcement that they were going to began
building and using satellites to use in space days before the United States planned to announce the
same thing helped fuel the fire for the competition. The Cold War also played a very influential role
in the competitiveness between the countries and would inspire them to be better and work harder
than their rival. The general public also played a key role in the race. Reinforcing your country's
involvement in the race gave them the all clear to spend money to build these space crafts, satellites
and other technology in order to not only win, but to please the people. If a country has the support
of its people they can accomplish anything. Propaganda like posters became a great way of
encouraging the people to get involved and stay involved. Posters depicted great spaceships only
seen in movies, engrained a hatred for the opposing country, the influence the race had on the future,
and astronauts as real life superheroes like Superman. Most importantly the Space Race was a time
of great inventions that carry on to

The United States And Soviet Union Essay
The 1980's were a dynamic time in the life cycle of the Cold War. The early portion of this decade,
which saw massive shifts in the administrations of the United States and Soviet Union, maintained
an atmosphere of suspicion, wariness, and skepticism. This theme of uncertainty and caution was
the logical product of decades of both American and Soviet duplicity, confrontation, and
militarization. Yet, despite this mistrust between the polar Cold War belligerents, and contrary to the
early rhetoric of the Reagan administration, the United States and Soviet Union modified their
perceptions of each other's intentions following 1985's Reykjavik Summit, which, despite producing
no tangible results, established common desire for arms reduction and a conclusion of the Cold War.
This warming of relations, however, increased at a gradual rate and encountered significant hurdles
as the two nations attempted to limit the potential for thermonuclear war. Ultimately, Ronald Reagan
and Mikhail Gorbachev's "dialogue of the eyes" transitioned from one administration to the next,
while also weathering significant domestic pressures as the United Soviet Socialist Republic
disintegrated.
Doubt and insecurity largely characterized the Cold War in the late–1970s and early stages of the
Reagan presidency. Following the rise and fall of détente, the collapse of the Nixon administration,
and the expansion of alarmist groups such as the Committee on the Present Danger, the Soviet
Union and

The Creation Of Sputnik
On October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched a satellite called Sputnik 1 into space. This marked
the start of the space race. Americans were terrified of the chance of the Soviet's sending missiles
from space. However Dwight. D. Eisenhower was not scared and did not do much.
About a month later on November 3, 1957 the Soviets launched a new spacecraft called Sputnik 2.
Sputnik 2 sent the first animal into space, it was named Laika. Lakia did not survive, but the
Russians were in the lead.
America decided to do something so they attempted to send Vanguard, ( satellite, nobody was in it)
on December 6th 1957 into earth's orbit. At that time there was no NASA, the project was under the

They were working on an even bigger rocket than Saturn 5. It was called N–1 and it was intended
for a lunar launch. Unfortunately (fortunate for America) 5 months later the N–1 rocket exploded at
a launch pad.
Although half the nation doubted the launch on May 16th 1 million people came to watch the launch
of Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins as the crew. They were going
to watch the launch of a spacecraft that was going to land on the moon.
After the journey to get near the moon at 1:46 p.m. July 20th Armstrong and Aldrin pulled away
from the command module in the landing module named Eagle. Meanwhile Michael Collins was
orbiting the moon alone. At 4:18 on July 20th the Eagle had landed. At 10:56 P.M. July 20th Neil
Armstrong took his first step onto the moon.
They had done it they had landed! Buzz Aldrin soon came and they collected moon samples.
At 1:54 p.m. July 20th the Eagle is lifted in the air. If they had not been able to do that Michael

The Beatles And Their Music
An entire generation in Cold War Soviet Russia was born to a nuclear bomb, raised under the
constant threat of war, and seemed doomed to suffocate by their own government, until they were
emancipated by a life force that was as formidable as unlikely a savior. This paper discusses the role
of the Beatles and their music in the cultural, political and social revolutions that took place Cold
War Russia. Drawing upon various conversations and anecdotes that Leslie Woodhead discusses in
his 2013 book 'How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin', this paper attempts to also understand how
contemporary Russia has evolved to carry with herself the revolutionary spirit of the Beatles.
As reiterated upon by various interviewees in different capacities, it is important that one must
preface any discussion of the Beatles in the Soviet Union with a historical context of the country in
the 1960s. It is indeed impossible to guess whether the Beatles would have had the impact they
made on another historical generation, but the Soviet population in the mid–sixties certainly lived in
a time that was "fertile ground" for the arrival of the Beatles (Woodhead, 23). In those early years of
the Cold War, Nikita Khrushchev and his efforts in spearheading Russia in the international space
race, along with his "thawing" of political, economic and cultural restrictions were a source of a
nationwide zeal and pride. Nevertheless, the rapid events leading to his ousting in 1965, and the

The Negative Effects Of Zero Earthquavity On Humans
Zero gravity can be something fun to experience, but it can also have some bad effects on humans.
Zero gravity or weightlessness happens when the effects of gravity are not experienced. Humans
have been experiencing zero gravity since the year 1961 when Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin
became the first human to travel to space. Zero gravity has became something humans experience
for fun. For example there is a company called Zero G and they they allow people to pay money to
go up in a plane and experience zero gravity. Even though some people find Zero gravity as a
experience of a lifetime, it can also have some bad effects on humans. The International Space
Station is in constant freefall above Earth. It's forward motion is just about equal to the speed it falls
to earth. This allows the astronauts inside to experience zero gravity. One function of The
International Space Station is to test the long term effects that zero gravity has on the human body. It
was a huge focus for the first one year long mission where astronauts were in zero gravity for one
year straight. (space.com) NASA uses astronauts to determine the effects of zero gravity on humans.
They send them to the International Space Station for long period at a time. Just recently Scott Kelly
and Mikhail Kornienko were the first humans to spend one consecutive year in space. NASA used
them to test the effects of zero gravity on humans. They used that information to help determine
how humans would react to zero

no the Cold War was unique, because a lot of lives would be gone if it was an ordinary war. The
Cold War was a result of the U.S/USSR involvement, the different economical ideas, and the
authoritative powers of the nations involved. The Cold War started around 1947 after World War II

Differences and Similarities Between Reagan and Gorbachev
The Cold War, which started sometime in the 1940's, was a large quarrel between the United States
and the Soviet Union. This dispute involved a lot of propaganda and threats of nuclear warfare.
Despite all of the trouble though, after over forty years of fighting, the two leaders of these countries
(Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev) would finally work out a solution. However, although they
did reach an agreement, there were many differences between these two men. One way in which
these men were dissimilar is that they were leaders of different countries, each with their own ideas
and opinions on how things should be dealt with. For example, Ronald Reagan was the president ...

This is especially true for Gorbachev because he knew that The Cold War needed to end. However,
in taking the steps to do this, Gorbachev eventually caused the collapse of The Soviet Union.
However, in the end, he was ending the war for the greater good. This is a respectable and admirable
trait of Gorbachev that is known globally. Another characteristic that Reagan and Gorbachev shared
was how popular they were with the American people. Ronald Reagan was a popular president by
the end of his time, and most Americans liked and respected him. Mikhail Gorbachev was also well
respected by the Americans because he allowed the destruction of the Berlin wall and was
eventually to blame for the fall of the Soviet Union. The United States saw Gorbachev as both an
ally and a friend. The Soviets on the other hand had mixed opinions on him. This makes him
dissimilar to Reagan because he was not popular with his own people. In addition to this similarity,
Reagan and Gorbachev also shared yet another attribute. This trait was that these two men worked
immensely to put an end to The Cold War. They were able to do this in many ways. For example,
Reagan and Gorbachev swapped letters multiple times on business. These letters show that these
two men worked together and eventually became acquaintances. These men showed diligence in
their dealings with one

Increased Military Spending During the Cold War Brought...
The increase in military spending is another argument that caused stagnation in the Soviet Union
during the period. Brezhnev spent huge amount of money in the defense sector and according to
Blanchard & Froot et al. (1994) the share of defense spending in GNP was 12% in 1960–70, and
increased by 4% in 1975–80 to 16%, even though the country was is deep economic crisis.
Brezhnev increased military spending each year; even as the country needed the spending in other
"important" sectors, to boots the growth of the country, and caused low–level of economic
development. Brezhnev increased the spending specifically on nuclear materials production plants,
compared to weapons. During this time in history both the superpower, USA and Soviet Union ...

The doctrine made it possible for the country to intervene in another socialist state (any Eastern
Bloc nation), internal affairs when the state social system and the states' common interests were
threatened. In early 1968 began the Czechoslovak Communist Party under the leadership of
Alexander Dubček to introduce a series of reforms, including the abolition of censorship
(Fordham.edu, 2014). In response to these efforts, the Soviet Union launched a policy to combat
"anti–socialist forces" (Wilde, 2014). The doctrine was first used in 1968 when the Soviet Union
invaded Czechoslovakia to end the "Prague Spring "(Fordham, 2014). The outcome of the invasion
by the Soviet Union made Czechoslovakia go back to communist control, "even if it meant a third
world war" (BBC, 2014). Mikhail Gorbachev's government denounced the Brezhnev doctrine in the
late of Soviet Union's life. Policy change does not necessarily come with leadership change. Russia
is a fundamentally different society than the Soviet Union. Communism is replaced by capitalism,
Russians can travel abroad and Internet revolution has long since reached the country. Russia
connoisseurs are comparing just the Putin–controlled period, which the country is in now, with 18
years under Leonid Brezhnev from 1964 to 1982. Prime Minister Medvedev has talked a lot about
modernization, but stagnation is the word that recurs when talking

The Evolution Of The Spacecraft
The Evolution of the Spacecraft "When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the Moon, I
cried." explained Alan Shepard when asked about his experience on the moon in February 1971 (8).
Space travel had humble beginnings with the first object reaching space orbit in the late 1950s.
Technology improved such that a rocket could be sent to the moon. Studying space teaches us about
our universe and our own planet. The space craft that scientist predict in the future will travel further
into the unknowns of space. In this research paper I will outline the history, the benefits, the present
state, and the future of space travel.
The construction of the first spacecraft was in a chaotic period known as the Cold War. The Cold
War was a war that started after of World War 2 with high tensions between the capitalist United
States and the communist Soviet Union. There were no shots fired between the two countries,
however threats of nuclear warfare still lingered (3). During the Cold War science and technology
grew into a major source of national pride.
The Soviet Union made incredible advances during the "Space Race". The Soviet Union made their
first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. Sputnik 1 orbited the Earth for 21 days before burning up in the
atmosphere in October 1957. The United States quickly fired a satellite about one fourth of the size
of the Sputnik 1, the Navy Vanguard, up into the atmosphere. Unfortunately the Navy Vanguard

The Importance Of Exploration In The Modern World
Many explorers in our modern world are trying to see what the outside of our planet looks like.
Before they go deeper into their exploration they need to do more research about it and they go out
there to see what is really going on. What are they going to find? Is there a danger here? The
influence of how many European explorers wanted to explore the world have an impact on the
modern world explorers. For example, Christopher Columbus who had the desire to explore eastern
of India but unfortunately, his plan did not work. Alternately, he landed in the Caribbean islands. In
the same way, today's explorers in our modern world are eager to explore space. But instead of that,
they always discover something new and they put all their attention in this new discovery.Humans
have always dreamed of visiting space, to know what is really happening outside our planet. What is
it in space? The exploration of space, sometimes called the conquest of space, consists of the
physical exploration of space, that is to say of all the objects external to space. Earth. The
exploration of the solar system is the first step, one of the major scientific events of the second half
of the twentieth century, but also more broadly for our societies, by the prodigious expansion of this
new frontier. The idea of sending an object or a man into space was designed by science fiction
writers hundreds of years before it was physically and materially possible. During the second half of
the twentieth century,

point was taken by the USSR. On October 4, 1957, the USSR launched the "Sputnik." Sputnik was

John Glenn became the first person to orbit the earth, from America. On July 16,1969, America won
the space race by landing on the moon. Neil Armstrong became very famous for his words "One

The Space Race : Soviet Union And The United States
The Space Race There are a few things that little boys love more than anything else and among
those are dinosaurs, racecars, and rocket ships. Plenty of kids have dreams of being an astronaut
when they grow up, and are influenced by cartoon characters like Gru trying to steal the moon in
Despicable Me, or the Octonauts on Disney Junior. However, these ideas and images had to have a
beginning somewhere within history, and those origins are known as the space race. This
technological rivalry took place between the no–longer–existent Soviet Union and the United States.
It began in the late 1950s, when Russia was in the midst of the Cold War. The space race pushed
mankind to reach for new heights in astronomical endeavors, to discover incredible celestial
wonders, and to accomplish what no man had done before. Nikita Khrushchev was the primary
leader of the Soviets during this time. While he attempted to maintain peace with the Western
powers, he was the one responsible for initiating the dreaded Cuban Missile Crisis, a foreign
conflict under Kennedy's presidency. He introduced a policy called "de–Stalinization" in the Soviet
Union, an effort to remove the influence of the previous potentate (History.com Staff 1). Presidents
Eisenhower and Kennedy were each in charge of the United States' cosmological efforts throughout
this interlude. Each was exceedingly important to the cause, and was held responsible for the
outcome of the duel as well as revving up the U.S. citizens

The Space Race: Competition Between The United States And...
At the close of WWII, only two world superpowers remained in tact: the United States and the
Soviet Union. The United States believed that the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism and
the United States wanted to stop the Soviet Union from doing so. The resulting conflicts between
the United States and Soviet Union became known as the Cold War. The two countries clashed over
communism, nuclear arms and "other policy matters" for several decades.
One outgrowth of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was the "Space
Race." The Space Race was a competition between the United States and The Soviet Union to
become the first world superpower to have the best technology in space. After World War II, the
United States and the Soviet Union understood how important experimentation with rockets would
be to their military strength going forward. Recognizing their own limitations, both countries
enlisted the world's foremost rocket scientists from Germany to help with their research. Not long
after, both the United States and the Soviet Union were making great strides in rocket technology.
By 1955, both countries announced that they were close to launching satellites into orbit. The two
countries took one another's claims as threats to their national security and the Space Race was born.
The Space Race was regarded as critically important by both the United States and the Soviet Union
because the outcome would show the world once and for all which country reigned

When people talk about the events in the space race, the first thing they often talk about is Neil
Armstrong being the first man to walk on the moon. While Neil Armstrong played a big part in the
race to the moon, there are many other people who contributed to the great space race. Many people
do not know who the major people involved in the space race were, what the race was trying to
accomplish, why it happened, and when this historical event took place in American history.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president who founded the space program, also known as NASA
(National Aeronautics and Space Administration.) The whole goal of NASA was to gain information
and fix the problems with flight within our atmosphere and outside of our atmosphere
(https://history.nasa.gov/factsheet.mht). There was also another reason why NASA was created, for
military and defense against enemies (https://history.nasa.gov/factsheet.mht). America's biggest
enemy at the time was the Soviet Union lead by Nikita Khrushchev. Shortly after Eisenhower
founded the space program, John F. Kennedy took over as president. President Kennedy met with
Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev on June fourth, 1961 to see if the Soviet Union wanted to work
together in achieving their common goal of sending a man to the moon. Khrushchev denied

situation leading up to Kennedy's "We choose to go to the moon" speech on September 12, 1962.

After the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Union became embroiled in what is
now known as the Cold War, this was both an international competition between two countries, and
an ideological confrontation between capitalism and communism. This led to direct and indirect

Sputnik And The Space Race
On October 4, 1957, the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union commenced in
a sudden, explosive fashion. The Soviet Union launched 'Sputnik', humanity's very first artificial
satellite, into outer space. Sputnik, meaning 'fellow traveler' in Russian, is now synonymous with
the Cold War and the Space Race. Sputnik's purpose was twofold – the first reason was purely to
beat the U.S. to outer space. However, Sputnik had scientific reasons to be in space as well. The
Soviet Union determined five objectives for Sputnik to accomplish during her time in space: 1. Test
the method of placing an artificial satellite into Earth's orbit, 2. Provide information on the density
of the atmosphere by calculating its lifetime in orbit, 3. Test radio and optical methods of orbital
tracking, 4. Determine the effects of radio wave propagation through the atmosphere, and 5. Check
principles of pressurization used on satellites. When the Soviet Union beat the United States by
launching something into space first, the U.S. reaction was palpable. Public fear and anxiety spread
throughout the nation, along with a sense of nationalism and pride. The United States must answer
with a launch, or face humiliation and defeat.
The United States answered the Soviets during the new year of 1958. The new year saw the launch
of Explorer I, the creation of NASA, and the founding of the top–secret project Corona. The launch
of the United States' first satellite a mere three months after

World War II : The Cold War
After World War II came to a stop in the mid–20th century, a new rivalry began known as the Cold
War. This battle sorrowed the world's two great powers the democratic, capitalist United States and
the communist Soviet Union against each other. Beginning in the late 1950s, space would become
another tense stage for this competition, as each side wanted to prove the superiority of its
technology, its military firepower and by extension its political–economic system. There were a lot
that led up prior to the space race. The United States came out of World War II with a huge amount
of strategic bomber force and they already used atom bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.
Since the Soviet Union did not have equal amount weapons and bases, they started manufacturing
rockets and ballistic missiles capable of intercontinental range. Policymakers of USA felt that the
diplomacy of the State Department was no longer sufficient to contain the USSR in light of the
tension between the Soviet Union and the United States .The National Security Act of 1947 created
the National Security Council. The function of the NSC as outlined in the 1947 act was to suggest
the President on integration of domestic, foreign, and military policies relating to national security
and to facilitate interagency cooperation. At the President 's direction, the NSC could also determine
and evaluate risks to U.S. national security, scrutinize policies, and then report or make
recommendations to the President.

Spencer accurately describes the honor and struggles associated with carrying such a title by
describing what the women in the book were doing in an interview with People magazine, "They
were basically treated as second–class citizens. They knew that they had more to offer, and they
basically rolled up their sleeves and 1 2 3 they did the work to be a part of something greater than
themselves. Their contributions to the space program, we're still feeling the impact of it today."

She was very dedicated to the girls and loved to encourage them to do better in life. Thus, when they
were singing a song that was degrading to their cultural and their history she immediately put a stop
to it. Margot Lee Shetterly describes the moment by writing, "It was a powerful moment for the
girls...Mary didn't have the power to remove the limits that society imposed...but it was her duty...to
help pry off the restrictions they might place on themselves" (98). Mary made an impact on the girls
even if she couldn't make one on the way society viewed African–Americans.
On September 2, 1945 World War II drew to an end however two years later another conflict
commenced. In 1947, the Cold War began which positioned two great countries against each other.
This was a fight to see weather democracy or communism was the superior foe. The Space Race
was the result the two leading countries fighting for dominance. Both countries were competing to
proclaim they were smatter, had better technology, and were overall more advanced in the multiple
fields. They were fighting to see who had better weapons, nuclear advances, and intel.
The Soviet Union seemed to be advancing against the United States during the 1950s. Then the
unimaginable happen, the Soviet Union was able to launch a missile into outer space which
contained the world's first artificial satellite. In the United States, Americans were surprised that the
Soviet Union had accomplished such a task. They were also afraid since

World War II : The Cold War
Soon after World War II ended in the mid–20th century, a new rivalry started known as the Cold
War. This battle aroused enmity between the world's two great powers the democratic, capitalist
United States and the communist Soviet Union. In the late 1950s, space became center stage for this
competition, as each side left no stone unturned to prove the superiority of its technology, military
firepower and political–economic system.
There was a lot that led up to the space race. The United States came out of World War II with a
huge amount of strategic bomber force and they already used atom bombs in Hiroshima and
Nagasaki in Japan, displaying its superiority in Nukes. The Soviet Union did not have equal amount
weapons and bomber force. So, they started manufacturing rockets and intercontinental range
ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Policymakers of USA felt that the diplomacy of the State Department
was no longer sufficient to contain the USSR amid the tension between the Soviet Union and the
United States. The National Security Council was created on the basis of the National Security Act
of 1947. The function of the NSC was to suggest the President on integration of military, foreign
and domestic policies relating to national security and to facilitate interagency cooperation. At the
President 's direction, the NSC determined and evaluated risks to U.S. national security, scrutinized
policies, and then reported or made recommendations to the President. The United States ran into

How Did The Sputnik Change The World
The world experienced very many huge moments, such big moments in which sometimes you don't
think it's really happening. October 4, 1957, was one of those days. It was the day of the Sputnik
launch. Sputnik was a Soviet satellite that orbited in the earth's rotation 584 miles above the earth
and traveling at about 18,000 mph. It took approximately 98 minutes for it to rotate the earth which
meant it passed the United States seven times a day. The sputnik had a diameter of 22 inches and
184 pounds. It's visible with binoculars before and after sunrise, sputnik transmitted radio signals
back to earth strong enough to be picked up by amateurs radio operators. The Sputnik changed
many things in the world like the view on the Soviets and their ability to produce technology. Since
the United States saw that the Soviet Union was the first to launch their satellite they ask themselves
that why haven't they become the first to launch? So since the day Soviet Union launch the United
States responded so they created NASA to improve education to train future engineers, and
developing technology to win the Space Race. The U.S. government, military, and scientific
community were caught off guard by the Soviet technological achievement. The 65° inclination and
duration of its orbit made its flight path cover virtually the entire inhabited Earth. Tracking and
studying Sputnik 1 from Earth provided scientists with valuable information, even though the
satellite wasn't equipped with

COLLAPSE OF THE SOVIET UNION
To understand why unlike the Soviet Union's political system, China's is not near collapse, one must
first understand why and how the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) collapsed, resulting
in the collapse of the Soviet Union itself. After the October Revolution, the CPSU adopted Leninism
as the main party ideology, and moved swiftly to adopt socialist changes. However, as Lenin's
health declined, his main supporters, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, began fighting amongst
themselves. Stalin won, forcing Trotsky into exile, and after Lenin's death, began implementing a
series of policies known as Stalinism to solidify his totalitarian rule. Partly influenced by fascism,
Stalin promoted the cult of personality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leonid Brezhnev, who took power after Khrushchev, attempted to reinstate Stalinism back into the
Soviet Union. His reign created the neo–Stalinist period in Russia, albeit with a series of economic
reforms that favored light industries and the production of consumer goods than heavy industry.
Brezhnev also supported weakening animosities with the West in order to improve relations,
attempting to improve the social and economic condition within the Soviet Union. However, due to
health problems, much of the actual implementation was carried out by others within the CPSU
leadership. Being on average older than the general population, the CPSU leadership was mostly
conservative, which hindered the progress. Overall, through trying to combine the conservative and
relatively outdated ideologies of Stalinism with failing economic reforms, Brezhnev was credited
with the Era of Stagnation in the Soviet Union, being unable to deal with both internal and
international affairs. Following Brezhnev was Yuri Andropov, a reformist who, during his short time
as the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, pushed for more freedom in media
and appointed several other reformers into key positions in the CPSU. Konstantin Chernenko, who
took power against Andropov's wishes following his demise, attempted to shift back into the
Brezhnev era policies, while also promoting reforms in education and the role of labor unions.
However, poor health prevented him from properly implementing policies, and de facto power
remained with reformer Mikhail Gorbachev. By this point, the constant fighting between reformists
and Stalinists, together with conflicting and ineffective policies, had severely damaged the Soviet
economy, as well as deteriorated international relations, escalating the Cold War, and slowly
worsened socioeconomic and political tensions within

The Impact Of The Space Race
The Space Race, occurring between 1957 and 1975, allowed both the Union of Soviet Socialist
Republics and The United States of America to develop technology and spread their respective
communist and capitalist ideologies. The Space Race allowed the two nations to compete for
superiority in a non–lethal arena. Unlike other confrontations, the Space Race also gave both parties
the platform to prove their superiority to their own nations through frequent propaganda use in the
form of film, television, paintings, cartoons, posters, ect. Propaganda allowed both nations to
influence people's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours by injecting their own political ideology. During
1957, the Soviets launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik–1. The U.S were concerned
that the Soviets would attach a missile to the satellite and consequently gain the ability to fire down
at the U.S with little to no notice. As fear rose in the U.S, the government seized the perfect
opportunity to gain public support for NASA and the space program. The government used this as
the ideal time to magnify the nation's fears of communism into the form of propaganda. As the U.S
produced high quantities of propaganda, the Soviets responded with their own, highlighting their
personal attitudes and ideologies. Source 1. Drawn by Boris Berezovsky, a Russian business

Taking a Look at the Space Race
The Space Race was a 20th century competition between the former Soviet Union and United States
for dominion in spaceflight capability and is still an event that generates controversy. Historians and
contemporary analysts who claim the United States won the space race frequently cite "the landing
of Apollo 11 on the moon" as the sole reason why the nation won. However, while this event was
indeed a triumph, it was stimulated by a series of consecutive feats by the former Soviet Union. The
U.S.S.R. was the victor of the space race because it successfully launched the world's first artificial
satellite, the Sputnik 1, leading directly to the launch of the first living creature into space with the
Sputnik 2. Later, the U.S.S.R launched the first human into orbit inducing future endeavors like the
launch of the first woman in space and the first–ever spacewalk. The U.S.S.R. then "kicked off the
era of manned space stations with its Salyut series of orbital outposts" as the series fostered the
development of the Mir space station. In essence, although these events were paralleled with the
prompted creations and developments from the United States, the former Soviet Union's space
accomplishments paved the way for future innovations in space.
As a result of the successful launch of the world's first artificial satellite (the Sputnik 1) that led
directly to the launch of the first living creature into space (with the Sputnik 2), the U.S.S.R. was the
winner of the space race. Prior

Essay On The Space Race
The Space Race
Imagine you're running in a race, all you have to do to win is run fast and go past the finish line
first. Now, imagine you're in another race, but to win you must walk on the moon! The United
States and the Soviets had that kind of race during the Cold War, called the Space Race. According
to the Merriam–Webster dictionary, a Cold War is "a state of political hostility between countries
characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare, in particular." This
Cold War was "a state of geopolitical tension after World War II between powers in the Eastern Bloc
and powers in the Western Bloc." (History.com staff, 2010) and lasted from 1945–1990. In this

Neil Armstrong was a very significant person. He was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio, on August 5th,
1930. In 1949–1952 he was a naval aviator, then in 1955 he joined NASA. For 17 years he was a
test pilot, engineer, astronaut, and administrator for NACA and NASA. "NASA stands for National
Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA was started in 1958 as a part of the United States
government. NASA is in charge of U.S. science and technology that has to do with airplanes or
space." (NASA.gov staff, 2009) Armstrong began his NASA career in Ohio. At age 32, he officially
transferred to astronaut status. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, Neil gained the distinction
of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. (NASA.gov staff,
2012) After that, he received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical engineering from Purdue
University and a master of science in Aerospace Engineering from the university of Southern
California. Sadly, Neil Armstrong died from cardiovascular procedures complications on August

Script for US–Soviet Space Race Presentation
"Americans, traditionally, love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle...Americans love
a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time...That 's why Americans
have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to
Americans" – This quote from the 1970 biopic of General George Patton illustrates the worldview
of Americans during and immediately following World War II. When the new battle of the Cold War
began, the Soviet Union became our new enemy, to be absolutely and utterly defeated by any means
necessary. Not only was each advancement by the U.S. a victory, but each one by the USSR was
implicitly a failure. This mindset culminated in the U.S.–Soviet Space race, a struggle to obliterate
the other side technologically while leaving no room for collaboration. This presentation seeks to
explain the history of the event, as well as the positive and negative effects of the competitive factor.
To briefly roadmap how this presentation will proceed, I will first explain the contributing factors
that went into starting the conflict, followed by how it began. Then, I will follow by highlighting
some major accomplishments from both sides. From there, I will explain the media's take on the
events as they unfolded, how the race ended, and finally conclude with an analysis of how the race
positively and negatively impacted the world.

Taking a Look at the Space Race
The 20th century was a complex and eventful time period for the Soviet Union. The Union of Soviet
Socialist Republics (also known as the USSR or Soviet Union) survived and advanced through a
century that consisted of revolutions, changes in leadership figures and policies, and events such as
World War II and the Cold War. As this union experienced a period of so much change, there is no
doubt that these events had a variety of large impacts on the history and culture of the Soviet Union.
However, a certain series of events and explorations that also reached a peak during this era often
took a more subtle route of impact on Soviet society and culture. Space exploration in the Soviet
Union and across the world took a huge leap forward toward the end of the 20th century. Namely,
the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America lasted from the 1950's
to the 1970's and engaged the country in an intense competition to the moon. While the Space Race
did focus on achieving greatness in space, a deeper analysis showed that it revolved around the
desire to obtain supremacy in not only the spaceflight sector of the world, but also as a powerhouse
nation in general. The United States and the USSR pushed each other to complete the first to launch
into space, send humans to space, and finally to reach the moon. Ultimately, one of the largest ways
that the Space Race incluenced the culture and people of the Soviet Union happened through the

The Soviet War : The Cold War Essay
COLD WAR TERMINATION
Most historians and foreign policy analysts in 1981 did not anticipate that within a decade the Cold
War would be over and that it would end with relatively little violence and the end of the Soviet
Union. Structural forces have received considerably less attention than the players in assessments on
the end of the Cold War. There is widespread recognition that a stagnating Soviet economy
definitely shaped Gorbachev 's policy of perestroika to revive a command economy dominated by
the Soviet Communist Party and state. Although Gorbachev struggled to transform the Soviet
economy, the American economy revived after a severe recession in 1982 and took off into
sustained growth, offering a striking contrast to the Soviet scene.
Cultural forces had less immediate impact on Soviet and American policymakers and remain more
elusive with respect to demonstrating their impact on the endgame of the Cold War. The Russians
had long since lost out with respect to influence around the globe in areas such as the media,
consumer products, and lifestyle. The Soviet Union also had lost the ideological competition, a
central feature of the Cold War since its origins. Although Gorbachev launched glasnost to open the
door to new ideas and to reduce the remaining repression in the Soviet system as it struggled with
the legacies of Stalinist totalitarianism, the Soviet leader faced a difficult challenge to overcome
both the resistance inherent in the Soviet system as well as

Gagarin joined a flying club and took to the skies for the first time. He graduated from the Soviet

Gagarin's plane that day, flipping it and forcing it into an unrecoverable spiral dive towards the
ground." and she also states "In 2013, Leonov announced on the Russia Today TV network that
another report on the crash, recently declassified, confirmed the real story: A second plane being
tested that day, an Su–15 jet, mistakenly flew far lower than its planned altitude of 33,000 feet,
instead passing close to where Gagarin's plane had been flying, around 2,000 feet. Such a large
aircraft would be able to roll over a smaller one (like the MiG–15) in its wake if the two planes
came too close to each other." This evidence supports that a large aircraft with a large enough wind

The Space Race Essay
The years after World War II was a time of great scientific and technological advancements. With
these advancements came great tension and rivalry between the United States and the former Union
of Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR). The biggest rivalry between the two superpowers was the
advancement in space technology. In 1952, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) was
established in which scientists stated that in the time between July 1, 1957 and December 31, 1958,
solar activity would be at a high point. The IGY made it so that both the US and the USSR became
determined to be the first to reach space, and so the space race was born. During the space race, the
USSR made many launches that were very advanced and superior to the US. ... Show more content

This launch was extraordinary because it put the first living mammal into space. "This satellite was
much heavier than Sputnik 1, having two cabins, one for the equipment and controls and another for
Laika, the dog. Laika's cabin provided her with oxygen, food, water and allowed the dog enough
room to lie down and stand"(Siddiqi). It was predicted that Laika would live for ten days, but due to
thermal problems inside the satellite she only survived for about two. At the time of Sputnik 2, there
was no mention of the US even trying to send any living organism into space because they were still
having trouble with regular satellite launches. This launch not only further emphasized the Soviet
Union's superiority to the United States, but it also provided scientists with the first data of a living
organism in space and foreshadowed the future in human space travel. By the anniversary of
Sputnik 1, it seemed like the United States were catching up to the Soviet Union in terms of
satellites launched. The US had now launched three Explorers and one Vanguard while the USSR
had launched three Sputniks. Although the US had launched more satellite than the USSR, Sputnik

Yuri Knorozov : A Difficult Student
Yuri Knorozov was born in 1922 in Kharkiv, Russia. Although Yuri's parents were Russian
intellectuals, he spent a majority of his younger life as a delinquent. Yuri has been described as "a
difficult student" and was even on the boarder of being expelled from education for misbehavior
when it suddenly became clear that his inquisitive temperament and extreme accuracy with attention
to detail became outstandingly noticeable. In 1940, at the age of 17, Yuri left his home in Kharkiv
for one in Moscow. His travel to Moscow eventually got him enrolled in Moscow State University
where he studied under the newly created Department of Ethnology. The major of his study was
Egyptology, and later he came to specialize in that field. However, his undergrad study was cut short
as WWII came to Russia and Yuri was drafted into war in 1943. From 1943 until 1945, Yuri fought
for the Red Army of Russia as an artillery spotter (a person in war who is responsible for directing
artillery or mortar fire into enemy lines). In the autumn of 1945, he returned to his studies at
Moscow State University in order to complete his courses. At the time, he displayed particular
interest in the study of ancient writing systems. During his duration at Moscow State University, he
spent a great deal of time devoted to the studying of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. This interest

NASA:
Nasa was a very important part to the Space race as it was the U.S. organisation that helped build an
aircraft that could launch human beings into space; hence 'the first man on the moon'.
The term 'NASA' stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. As a part of the U.S.
government, it was initiated in 1958. Nasa does many important things, the man one being, that they
make satellites, which are then used for scientists to learn more about space. It is overall in charge
of U.S. science and technology that is based about looking and finding out more to do with airplanes
as well as space.
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated:
"We will safely send and return an American to the moon before the end of the decade".
This worked out exceptionally well as NASA helped quite well through the usage of the research
and the Apollo program. With the use of this exceptional program, for the first time in man–kind
history, people had left Earth, orbited it as well as, to a great surprise, had also landed on the moon.
Overall these trips, especially the ones involving human beings travelling in space, continue to help
NASA and scientists investigate further.
When did it occur?
When the Space Race occurred, it was first led on by Soviet Union on October 1957 (the time of
which the space race first started). This was when Soviet Union successfully launched the first
satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit around Earth.

Yuri stood outside the shop, watching his prey with an evil grin. He had waited long enough.
The prey walked out of the store, and Yuri purposely bumped into him, knocking the man over. Yuri
studied the man discreetly, a kind smile forming on his face as he offered the man a hand up. His
platinum hair fell over his left eye, which was a beautiful shade of blue green. His pale skin looked
beautiful in the sunlight, and his lips looked very smooth and soft. He was exactly 180 centimeters
tall, or five feet and eleven inches. Today he was wearing a slate–blue trenchcoat over his clothes,
and had the most dumbfounded look on his face. He took Yuri's hand, and Yuri helped pull him up.
"I'm so sorry about that sir! Is there anything I could do to make it up?" Yuri said in his most
innocent voice ever, and Victor shook his head. "No, no it's fine. It was just an accident." He said,
but before he could walk away, Yuri grabbed him by the wrist. Victor looked at him confused. "No, I
insist. Just a cup of coffee or something? What would you like?" He asked in a insisting, more
demanding, voice. Victor sighed in defeat, and smiled again. "Alright, coffee sounds great." He said,
and Yuri smiled brightly and led the man to the nearby cafe.
As they sat down, across from each other, Yuri couldn't help but stare at the man. He was definitely
the type of boy he used to stalk when he was in school, but that was a different story for another
time. His gaze met the eyes of the other man,

Conspiracy Theories Have Caused People To Question Everything
Conspiracy theories have caused people to question everything the government tells them for
hundreds of years. A conspiracy theory is an explanation of an event or situation that invokes a
conspiracy without warrant. Conspiracy theories generally involve an illegal or harmful act carried
out by the government or other powerful actors. The Moon landing is still one of the biggest
conspiracy theories in the world. After forty–eight years it is still being debated and discussed in
many laboratories, and classrooms across the globe. On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts by

Some people have reason to believe that the dark interior of the space shuttle looked like the
darkness of space, and the circular window gave the circular shape of the earth. The film also states
that one of the astronauts used a crescent shape to alter the shape of the earth as they drifted farther
into space. The consistency of the video was also at question. The film shows decent quality color
video inside of the spaceship, but the film on the moon was black and white. Many conspiracy
theorists claim that the video footage was leaked from NASA by accident. When the video footage
was leaked conspiracy theorist dissected the footage and made a hypothesis of how the footage was
produced. NASA says that every theory is false and they stand behind their statements firm.
What motivated the moon landing?
The moon landing was highly motivated by the space race between the United States, and the Soviet
Union. The space race caused a very tense tone in each country, as they both were trying to be the
first to make it into space. The Soviet Union made the first milestone by launching Sputnik into the

The Historical Background Of Yuri Gagarin

  • 1. The Historical Background Of Yuri Gagarin Intro. Yuri Gagarin is still a hero and national icon in the Russia today. His achievement can be argued as having one of the greatest effects on Soviet culture. The young man who on April 12, 1961 became the first person in space and to circle the Earth in the Vostok rocket. When he returned to Earth, he was "born twice, there was his original, physical birth in 1934, and his second birth as a public figure in 1961." This event is also a prime example of how technology has played a crucial role in modern life. To understand the significance of the Gagarin's accomplishment, it is important to look at historical background in the Soviet Space program and supporting individuals such as Sergei Korolev that helped in culminating Gagarin's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soviet rocket development can be credited to Korolev's. His contribution of the R–7 rocket is arguably the most important innovation of the entire Soviet Space program. Gagarin would not have flown into space without Korolev; "a genius, unmatched by the engineers at NASA." After the successful launching of Sputnik, the Soviets began to consider using the R–7 to launch the first live organism in space; a dog named Layka. It "required Korolev to modify the structure of the R–7 to encompass a small cylinder." The successful first test of the combination of capsule and rocket cemented opinions that Korolev's R–7 was the only method to get a human into space. It also demonstrated what the Soviets eventually wanted which was launch a man in space. And in 1960, Korolev submitted his proposal for a human to fly in Space. When Sergei Korolev was promoted to Chief Designer of the Soviet Space program, he became colleagues with Gagarin because "Gagarin made a good impression by asking pertinent questions." Korolev's relationship with Gagarin was very close, initially taking him under his wing calling him "my little eagle." Interestingly, Korolev was unsure that Gagarin could ... • 2. Russia And The Soviet Union Russia had many complications before Mikhail Gorbachev came into power for the Soviet Union. During 1939 through 1945, Russian took part in World War II heavily and were led by Dictator Joseph Stalin. Following the war, Russia was in a nuclear arms race with America, riding on everyone's fear of there being a World War III and a nuclear war. Post World War II Russia and the rest of the Soviet Union had very poor living conditions due to the mass of poverty. In 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis took place, which was also known as the October Crisis. This was when American President John F. Kennedy was informed that there were Soviet nuclear–tipped missiles in Cuba where he then made a deal with Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev where America would not invade Cuba as long as the Soviet Union withdrew its missiles. Following this was the Brezhnev Era, Soviet Union circa 1964 through 1982, in the Soviet Union. The Brezhnev Era is the time in the Soviet Union that Leonid Brezhnev was in power of Russia and the Soviet Union from October 1964 through November 1982. During this era, the Soviet Union began with a high economic growth and prosperity but then it ended in a weaker Soviet Union with a social, political and economic lack of progress. Nikita Khrushchev was President before Brezhnev but he was kicked out of office due to his lack of accomplishing his set goals. During the Brezhnev Era, the leadership style was known as "collective leadership" which would continue through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Aspects And Effects Of The Space Race Brooks Brumby Mr. Hubbard November 17, 2017 The Space Race: Aspects and Effects The Space Race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States to see which nation could achieve spaceflight dominance before the other. The Race began on August 2, 1955 and ended nearly 40 years later in December of 1991. The Space Race began because of two major factors that would carry it until its end. The Soviet Union's announcement that they were going to began building and using satellites to use in space days before the United States planned to announce the same thing helped fuel the fire for the competition. The Cold War also played a very influential role in the competitiveness between the countries and would inspire them to be better and work harder than their rival. The general public also played a key role in the race. Reinforcing your country's involvement in the race gave them the all clear to spend money to build these space crafts, satellites and other technology in order to not only win, but to please the people. If a country has the support of its people they can accomplish anything. Propaganda like posters became a great way of encouraging the people to get involved and stay involved. Posters depicted great spaceships only seen in movies, engrained a hatred for the opposing country, the influence the race had on the future, and astronauts as real life superheroes like Superman. Most importantly the Space Race was a time of great inventions that carry on to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The world watching these counties as they threaten one another with missile treats like the Cuba Missile Crises or the missiles that the US had in Turkey. There was also the Space Race where US and USSR tried to be the first to the moon. During the 1950's the countries first raced to see who can develop the technology to send an artificial satellite into the earth orbit. Then they tried to go further and send a human into orbit and later on to have them land and actually be able to walk on the moon. With both countries getting close ... • 5. The United States And Soviet Union Essay The 1980's were a dynamic time in the life cycle of the Cold War. The early portion of this decade, which saw massive shifts in the administrations of the United States and Soviet Union, maintained an atmosphere of suspicion, wariness, and skepticism. This theme of uncertainty and caution was the logical product of decades of both American and Soviet duplicity, confrontation, and militarization. Yet, despite this mistrust between the polar Cold War belligerents, and contrary to the early rhetoric of the Reagan administration, the United States and Soviet Union modified their perceptions of each other's intentions following 1985's Reykjavik Summit, which, despite producing no tangible results, established common desire for arms reduction and a conclusion of the Cold War. This warming of relations, however, increased at a gradual rate and encountered significant hurdles as the two nations attempted to limit the potential for thermonuclear war. Ultimately, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev's "dialogue of the eyes" transitioned from one administration to the next, while also weathering significant domestic pressures as the United Soviet Socialist Republic disintegrated. Doubt and insecurity largely characterized the Cold War in the late–1970s and early stages of the Reagan presidency. Following the rise and fall of détente, the collapse of the Nixon administration, and the expansion of alarmist groups such as the Committee on the Present Danger, the Soviet Union and ... • 6. The Creation Of Sputnik On October 4, 1957 the Soviet Union launched a satellite called Sputnik 1 into space. This marked the start of the space race. Americans were terrified of the chance of the Soviet's sending missiles from space. However Dwight. D. Eisenhower was not scared and did not do much. About a month later on November 3, 1957 the Soviets launched a new spacecraft called Sputnik 2. Sputnik 2 sent the first animal into space, it was named Laika. Lakia did not survive, but the Russians were in the lead. America decided to do something so they attempted to send Vanguard, ( satellite, nobody was in it) on December 6th 1957 into earth's orbit. At that time there was no NASA, the project was under the Naval Research Laboratory and National Science Foundation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They were working on an even bigger rocket than Saturn 5. It was called N–1 and it was intended for a lunar launch. Unfortunately (fortunate for America) 5 months later the N–1 rocket exploded at a launch pad. Although half the nation doubted the launch on May 16th 1 million people came to watch the launch of Apollo 11 with Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins as the crew. They were going to watch the launch of a spacecraft that was going to land on the moon. After the journey to get near the moon at 1:46 p.m. July 20th Armstrong and Aldrin pulled away from the command module in the landing module named Eagle. Meanwhile Michael Collins was orbiting the moon alone. At 4:18 on July 20th the Eagle had landed. At 10:56 P.M. July 20th Neil Armstrong took his first step onto the moon. They had done it they had landed! Buzz Aldrin soon came and they collected moon samples. At 1:54 p.m. July 20th the Eagle is lifted in the air. • 7. The Beatles And Their Music An entire generation in Cold War Soviet Russia was born to a nuclear bomb, raised under the constant threat of war, and seemed doomed to suffocate by their own government, until they were emancipated by a life force that was as formidable as unlikely a savior. This paper discusses the role of the Beatles and their music in the cultural, political and social revolutions that took place Cold War Russia. Drawing upon various conversations and anecdotes that Leslie Woodhead discusses in his 2013 book 'How The Beatles Rocked the Kremlin', this paper attempts to also understand how contemporary Russia has evolved to carry with herself the revolutionary spirit of the Beatles. As reiterated upon by various interviewees in different capacities, it is important that one must preface any discussion of the Beatles in the Soviet Union with a historical context of the country in the 1960s. It is indeed impossible to guess whether the Beatles would have had the impact they made on another historical generation, but the Soviet population in the mid–sixties certainly lived in a time that was "fertile ground" for the arrival of the Beatles (Woodhead, 23). In those early years of the Cold War, Nikita Khrushchev and his efforts in spearheading Russia in the international space race, along with his "thawing" of political, economic and cultural restrictions were a source of a nationwide zeal and pride. Nevertheless, the rapid events leading to his ousting in 1965, and the hastily implemented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Negative Effects Of Zero Earthquavity On Humans Zero gravity can be something fun to experience, but it can also have some bad effects on humans. Zero gravity or weightlessness happens when the effects of gravity are not experienced. Humans have been experiencing zero gravity since the year 1961 when Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel to space. Zero gravity has became something humans experience for fun. For example there is a company called Zero G and they they allow people to pay money to go up in a plane and experience zero gravity. Even though some people find Zero gravity as a experience of a lifetime, it can also have some bad effects on humans. The International Space Station is in constant freefall above Earth. It's forward motion is just about equal to the speed it falls to earth. This allows the astronauts inside to experience zero gravity. One function of The International Space Station is to test the long term effects that zero gravity has on the human body. It was a huge focus for the first one year long mission where astronauts were in zero gravity for one year straight. (space.com) NASA uses astronauts to determine the effects of zero gravity on humans. They send them to the International Space Station for long period at a time. Just recently Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko were the first humans to spend one consecutive year in space. NASA used them to test the effects of zero gravity on humans. They used that information to help determine how humans would react to zero ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Differences and Similarities Between Reagan and Gorbachev The Cold War, which started sometime in the 1940's, was a large quarrel between the United States and the Soviet Union. This dispute involved a lot of propaganda and threats of nuclear warfare. Despite all of the trouble though, after over forty years of fighting, the two leaders of these countries (Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev) would finally work out a solution. However, although they did reach an agreement, there were many differences between these two men. One way in which these men were dissimilar is that they were leaders of different countries, each with their own ideas and opinions on how things should be dealt with. For example, Ronald Reagan was the president ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is especially true for Gorbachev because he knew that The Cold War needed to end. However, in taking the steps to do this, Gorbachev eventually caused the collapse of The Soviet Union. However, in the end, he was ending the war for the greater good. This is a respectable and admirable trait of Gorbachev that is known globally. Another characteristic that Reagan and Gorbachev shared was how popular they were with the American people. Ronald Reagan was a popular president by the end of his time, and most Americans liked and respected him. Mikhail Gorbachev was also well respected by the Americans because he allowed the destruction of the Berlin wall and was eventually to blame for the fall of the Soviet Union. The United States saw Gorbachev as both an ally and a friend. The Soviets on the other hand had mixed opinions on him. This makes him dissimilar to Reagan because he was not popular with his own people. In addition to this similarity, Reagan and Gorbachev also shared yet another attribute. This trait was that these two men worked immensely to put an end to The Cold War. They were able to do this in many ways. For example, Reagan and Gorbachev swapped letters multiple times on business. These letters show that these two men worked together and eventually became acquaintances. These men showed diligence in their dealings with one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Brezhnev spent huge amount of money in the defense sector and according to Blanchard & Froot et al. The Evolution Of The Spacecraft The Evolution of the Spacecraft "When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the Moon, I cried." explained Alan Shepard when asked about his experience on the moon in February 1971 (8). Space travel had humble beginnings with the first object reaching space orbit in the late 1950s. Technology improved such that a rocket could be sent to the moon. Studying space teaches us about our universe and our own planet. The space craft that scientist predict in the future will travel further into the unknowns of space. In this research paper I will outline the history, the benefits, the present state, and the future of space travel. The construction of the first spacecraft was in a chaotic period known as the Cold War. The Cold War was a war that started after of World War 2 with high tensions between the capitalist United States and the communist Soviet Union. There were no shots fired between the two countries, however threats of nuclear warfare still lingered (3). During the Cold War science and technology grew into a major source of national pride. The Soviet Union made incredible advances during the "Space Race". The Soviet Union made their first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1. Sputnik 1 orbited the Earth for 21 days before burning up in the atmosphere in October 1957. The United States quickly fired a satellite about one fourth of the size of the Sputnik 1, the Navy Vanguard, up into the atmosphere. Before they go deeper into their exploration they need to do more research about it and they go out there to see what is really going on. What are they going to find? Is there a danger here? The influence of how many European explorers wanted to explore the world have an impact on the modern world explorers. For example, Christopher Columbus who had the desire to explore eastern of India but unfortunately, his plan did not work. Alternately, he landed in the Caribbean islands. In the same way, today's explorers in our modern world are eager to explore space. But instead of that, they always discover something new and they put all their attention in this new discovery.Humans have always dreamed of visiting space, to know what is really happening outside our planet. What is it in space? The exploration of space, sometimes called the conquest of space, consists of the physical exploration of space, that is to say of all the objects external to space. Earth. The exploration of the solar system is the first step, one of the major scientific events of the second half of the twentieth century, but also more broadly for our societies, by the prodigious expansion of this new frontier. Although no actual fighting between both countries took place, it was a war of fear. Both countries were worried they would be bombed by an atomic bomb, creating a Nuclear War. NASA's high key points were during the Space Race. The first key point was taken by the USSR. On October 4, 1957, the USSR launched the "Sputnik." Sputnik was a series of artificial satellites, which were the first to ever be placed into space, and the first to orbit the world. In 1958, the U.S. launched their own satellite, the Explorer I. In 1959, The Soviets launched Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the moon. In April 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first person to orbit the earth. Yet again, Gagarin was from the Soviet Union. May of 1961 John F. Kennedy made an abundant promise, that a man would hit the moon before the end of the decade. John Glenn became the first person to orbit the earth, from America. On July 16,1969, America won the space race by landing on the moon. Neil Armstrong became very famous for his words "One small step for man,one giant leap for mankind." • 15. The Space Race : Soviet Union And The United States The Space Race There are a few things that little boys love more than anything else and among those are dinosaurs, racecars, and rocket ships. Plenty of kids have dreams of being an astronaut when they grow up, and are influenced by cartoon characters like Gru trying to steal the moon in Despicable Me, or the Octonauts on Disney Junior. However, these ideas and images had to have a beginning somewhere within history, and those origins are known as the space race. This technological rivalry took place between the no–longer–existent Soviet Union and the United States. It began in the late 1950s, when Russia was in the midst of the Cold War. The space race pushed mankind to reach for new heights in astronomical endeavors, to discover incredible celestial wonders, and to accomplish what no man had done before. Nikita Khrushchev was the primary leader of the Soviets during this time. While he attempted to maintain peace with the Western powers, he was the one responsible for initiating the dreaded Cuban Missile Crisis, a foreign conflict under Kennedy's presidency. He introduced a policy called "de–Stalinization" in the Soviet Union, an effort to remove the influence of the previous potentate (History.com Staff 1). The United States believed that the Soviet Union wanted to spread communism and the United States wanted to stop the Soviet Union from doing so. The resulting conflicts between the United States and Soviet Union became known as the Cold War. The two countries clashed over communism, nuclear arms and "other policy matters" for several decades. One outgrowth of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was the "Space Race." The Space Race was a competition between the United States and The Soviet Union to become the first world superpower to have the best technology in space. After World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union understood how important experimentation with rockets would be to their military strength going forward. Recognizing their own limitations, both countries enlisted the world's foremost rocket scientists from Germany to help with their research. Not long after, both the United States and the Soviet Union were making great strides in rocket technology. By 1955, both countries announced that they were close to launching satellites into orbit. Many people do not know who the major people involved in the space race were, what the race was trying to accomplish, why it happened, and when this historical event took place in American history. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the president who founded the space program, also known as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration.) The whole goal of NASA was to gain information and fix the problems with flight within our atmosphere and outside of our atmosphere (https://history.nasa.gov/factsheet.mht). There was also another reason why NASA was created, for military and defense against enemies (https://history.nasa.gov/factsheet.mht). Therefore, I will provide a small amount of context about the Cold War and the situation leading up to Kennedy's "We choose to go to the moon" speech on September 12, 1962. (Citation). After the Second World War, the United States and the Soviet Union became embroiled in what is now known as the Cold War, this was both an international competition between two countries, and an ideological confrontation between capitalism and communism. This led to direct and indirect competition on many fronts, such as proxy wars and police actions, the Olympics, the Nuclear Arms Race, and the Space Race. (Citation). Although there is disagreement on the precise date that the Space Race began, the moment that it became an important competition that was in the forefront of the minds of everyday Americans is on April 12, 1961 when Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin orbited the earth in Vostok 1. (citation). This event created a feeling amongst the American public that the Russians were further ahead in science and technology than the United States, as well as the fear that the Soviets could use their superior technology to be better able to attack the USA from a distance. • 19. Sputnik And The Space Race On October 4, 1957, the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union commenced in a sudden, explosive fashion. The Soviet Union launched 'Sputnik', humanity's very first artificial satellite, into outer space. Sputnik, meaning 'fellow traveler' in Russian, is now synonymous with the Cold War and the Space Race. Sputnik's purpose was twofold – the first reason was purely to beat the U.S. to outer space. However, Sputnik had scientific reasons to be in space as well. The Soviet Union determined five objectives for Sputnik to accomplish during her time in space: 1. Test the method of placing an artificial satellite into Earth's orbit, 2. Provide information on the density of the atmosphere by calculating its lifetime in orbit, 3. Test radio and optical methods of orbital tracking, 4. Determine the effects of radio wave propagation through the atmosphere, and 5. Check principles of pressurization used on satellites. When the Soviet Union beat the United States by launching something into space first, the U.S. reaction was palpable. Public fear and anxiety spread throughout the nation, along with a sense of nationalism and pride. The United States must answer with a launch, or face humiliation and defeat. October 4, 1957, was one of those days. It was the day of the Sputnik launch. Sputnik was a Soviet satellite that orbited in the earth's rotation 584 miles above the earth and traveling at about 18,000 mph. It took approximately 98 minutes for it to rotate the earth which meant it passed the United States seven times a day. The sputnik had a diameter of 22 inches and 184 pounds. It's visible with binoculars before and after sunrise, sputnik transmitted radio signals back to earth strong enough to be picked up by amateurs radio operators. The Sputnik changed many things in the world like the view on the Soviets and their ability to produce technology. After the October Revolution, the CPSU adopted Leninism as the main party ideology, and moved swiftly to adopt socialist changes. However, as Lenin's health declined, his main supporters, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, began fighting amongst themselves. Brezhnev also supported weakening animosities with the West in order to improve relations, attempting to improve the social and economic condition within the Soviet Union. However, due to health problems, much of the actual implementation was carried out by others within the CPSU leadership. Being on average older than the general population, the CPSU leadership was mostly conservative, which hindered the progress. Overall, through trying to combine the conservative and relatively outdated ideologies of Stalinism with failing economic reforms, Brezhnev was credited with the Era of Stagnation in the Soviet Union, being unable to deal with both internal and international affairs. The Impact Of The Space Race The Space Race, occurring between 1957 and 1975, allowed both the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and The United States of America to develop technology and spread their respective communist and capitalist ideologies. The Space Race allowed the two nations to compete for superiority in a non–lethal arena. Unlike other confrontations, the Space Race also gave both parties the platform to prove their superiority to their own nations through frequent propaganda use in the form of film, television, paintings, cartoons, posters, ect. Propaganda allowed both nations to influence people's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours by injecting their own political ideology. • 26. Taking a Look at the Space Race The Space Race was a 20th century competition between the former Soviet Union and United States for dominion in spaceflight capability and is still an event that generates controversy. Historians and contemporary analysts who claim the United States won the space race frequently cite "the landing of Apollo 11 on the moon" as the sole reason why the nation won. However, while this event was indeed a triumph, it was stimulated by a series of consecutive feats by the former Soviet Union. The U.S.S.R. was the victor of the space race because it successfully launched the world's first artificial satellite, the Sputnik 1, leading directly to the launch of the first living creature into space with the Sputnik 2. Later, the U.S.S.R launched the first human into orbit inducing future endeavors like the launch of the first woman in space and the first–ever spacewalk. The U.S.S.R. then "kicked off the era of manned space stations with its Salyut series of orbital outposts" as the series fostered the development of the Mir space station. In essence, although these events were paralleled with the prompted creations and developments from the United States, the former Soviet Union's space accomplishments paved the way for future innovations in space. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (also known as the USSR or Soviet Union) survived and advanced through a century that consisted of revolutions, changes in leadership figures and policies, and events such as World War II and the Cold War. As this union experienced a period of so much change, there is no doubt that these events had a variety of large impacts on the history and culture of the Soviet Union. However, a certain series of events and explorations that also reached a peak during this era often took a more subtle route of impact on Soviet society and culture. Space exploration in the Soviet Union and across the world took a huge leap forward toward the end of the 20th century. Namely, the Space Race between the Soviet Union and the United States of America lasted from the 1950's to the 1970's and engaged the country in an intense competition to the moon. While the Space Race did focus on achieving greatness in space, a deeper analysis showed that it revolved around the desire to obtain supremacy in not only the spaceflight sector of the world, but also as a powerhouse nation in general. • 30. The Soviet War : The Cold War Essay COLD WAR TERMINATION Most historians and foreign policy analysts in 1981 did not anticipate that within a decade the Cold War would be over and that it would end with relatively little violence and the end of the Soviet Union. Structural forces have received considerably less attention than the players in assessments on the end of the Cold War. There is widespread recognition that a stagnating Soviet economy definitely shaped Gorbachev 's policy of perestroika to revive a command economy dominated by the Soviet Communist Party and state. Although Gorbachev struggled to transform the Soviet economy, the American economy revived after a severe recession in 1982 and took off into sustained growth, offering a striking contrast to the Soviet scene. Cultural forces had less immediate impact on Soviet and American policymakers and remain more elusive with respect to demonstrating their impact on the endgame of the Cold War. The Russians had long since lost out with respect to influence around the globe in areas such as the media, consumer products, and lifestyle. The Soviet Union also had lost the ideological competition, a central feature of the Cold War since its origins. Although Gorbachev launched glasnost to open the door to new ideas and to reduce the remaining repression in the Soviet system as it struggled with the legacies of Stalinist totalitarianism, the Soviet leader faced a difficult challenge to overcome both the resistance inherent in the Soviet system as well as ... • 31. What Really Happened To Yuri Gagarin On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. He received many awards and medals from that day forward. He was born in Klushino in Smolensk, Russia. His father was carpenter and his mother was a milkmaid. According to Sarah Pruitt in the article What Really Happened to Yuri Gagarin the First Man in Space states "At 16, he moved to Moscow to apprentice as a foundry man in a metal works, but soon transferred to a technical school in Saratov. There, Gagarin joined a flying club and took to the skies for the first time. He graduated from the Soviet Air Force cadet school in 1957, and began serving as a fighter pilot." Or that the cabin pressure valve failed making them died from lack of Oxygen. The soviet launched investigation said the death could be a bird strike or that attempted to swerve a object but failed. Sarah Pruitt says "After running various computer simulations, the report concluded that the only viable explanation for the crash was that the Su–15 flew too close to Gagarin's plane that day, flipping it and forcing it into an unrecoverable spiral dive towards the ground." and she also states "In 2013, Leonov announced on the Russia Today TV network that another report on the crash, recently declassified, confirmed the real story: A second plane being tested that day, an Su–15 jet, mistakenly flew far lower than its planned altitude of 33,000 feet, instead passing close to where Gagarin's plane had been flying, around 2,000 feet. Such a large aircraft would be able to roll over a smaller one (like the MiG–15) in its wake if the two planes came too close to each other." This evidence supports that a large aircraft with a large enough wind turbulence flew close to his causing him to be forced into a tailspin causing his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Space Race Essay The years after World War II was a time of great scientific and technological advancements. With these advancements came great tension and rivalry between the United States and the former Union of Soviet Socialists Republic (USSR). The biggest rivalry between the two superpowers was the advancement in space technology. In 1952, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) was established in which scientists stated that in the time between July 1, 1957 and December 31, 1958, solar activity would be at a high point. The IGY made it so that both the US and the USSR became determined to be the first to reach space, and so the space race was born. During the space race, the USSR made many launches that were very advanced and superior to the US. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This launch was extraordinary because it put the first living mammal into space. "This satellite was much heavier than Sputnik 1, having two cabins, one for the equipment and controls and another for Laika, the dog. Laika's cabin provided her with oxygen, food, water and allowed the dog enough room to lie down and stand"(Siddiqi). It was predicted that Laika would live for ten days, but due to thermal problems inside the satellite she only survived for about two. At the time of Sputnik 2, there was no mention of the US even trying to send any living organism into space because they were still having trouble with regular satellite launches. This launch not only further emphasized the Soviet Union's superiority to the United States, but it also provided scientists with the first data of a living organism in space and foreshadowed the future in human space travel. By the anniversary of Sputnik 1, it seemed like the United States were catching up to the Soviet Union in terms of satellites launched. The US had now launched three Explorers and one Vanguard while the USSR had launched three Sputniks. Although the US had launched more satellite than the USSR, Sputnik 1 weighed more than all four of the US satellites combined and Sputnik 3 weighed and astonishing 2,950 pounds. The three US launches couldn't compare to the Soviet Union's launches because the Sputnik launches were so much more technologically advanced, once ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Yuri Knorozov : A Difficult Student Yuri Knorozov was born in 1922 in Kharkiv, Russia. Although Yuri's parents were Russian intellectuals, he spent a majority of his younger life as a delinquent. Yuri has been described as "a difficult student" and was even on the boarder of being expelled from education for misbehavior when it suddenly became clear that his inquisitive temperament and extreme accuracy with attention to detail became outstandingly noticeable. In 1940, at the age of 17, Yuri left his home in Kharkiv for one in Moscow. His travel to Moscow eventually got him enrolled in Moscow State University where he studied under the newly created Department of Ethnology. The major of his study was Egyptology, and later he came to specialize in that field. However, his undergrad study was cut short as WWII came to Russia and Yuri was drafted into war in 1943. From 1943 until 1945, Yuri fought for the Red Army of Russia as an artillery spotter (a person in war who is responsible for directing artillery or mortar fire into enemy lines). In the autumn of 1945, he returned to his studies at Moscow State University in order to complete his courses. At the time, he displayed particular interest in the study of ancient writing systems. During his duration at Moscow State University, he spent a great deal of time devoted to the studying of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. This interest led him to one of his more preferred professors. This professor then helped turn Yuri's attention from Egyptian Hieroglyphics to Mayan ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... NASA: Nasa was a very important part to the Space race as it was the U.S. organisation that helped build an aircraft that could launch human beings into space; hence 'the first man on the moon'. The term 'NASA' stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. As a part of the U.S. government, it was initiated in 1958. Nasa does many important things, the man one being, that they make satellites, which are then used for scientists to learn more about space. It is overall in charge of U.S. science and technology that is based about looking and finding out more to do with airplanes as well as space. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated: "We will safely send and return an American to the moon before the end of the decade". This worked out exceptionally well as NASA helped quite well through the usage of the research and the Apollo program. With the use of this exceptional program, for the first time in man–kind history, people had left Earth, orbited it as well as, to a great surprise, had also landed on the moon. Overall these trips, especially the ones involving human beings travelling in space, continue to help NASA and scientists investigate further. When did it occur? When the Space Race occurred, it was first led on by Soviet Union on October 1957 (the time of which the space race first started). This was when Soviet Union successfully launched the first satellite, Sputnik 1, into orbit around Earth. On October 5th, 1957, New ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. A Short Story : A Story? A Yuri stood outside the shop, watching his prey with an evil grin. He had waited long enough. The prey walked out of the store, and Yuri purposely bumped into him, knocking the man over. Yuri studied the man discreetly, a kind smile forming on his face as he offered the man a hand up. His platinum hair fell over his left eye, which was a beautiful shade of blue green. His pale skin looked beautiful in the sunlight, and his lips looked very smooth and soft. He was exactly 180 centimeters tall, or five feet and eleven inches. Today he was wearing a slate–blue trenchcoat over his clothes, and had the most dumbfounded look on his face. He took Yuri's hand, and Yuri helped pull him up. "I'm so sorry about that sir! Is there anything I could do to make it up?" Yuri said in his most innocent voice ever, and Victor shook his head. "No, no it's fine. It was just an accident." He said, but before he could walk away, Yuri grabbed him by the wrist. Victor looked at him confused. "No, I insist. Just a cup of coffee or something? What would you like?" He asked in a insisting, more demanding, voice. Victor sighed in defeat, and smiled again. "Alright, coffee sounds great." He said, and Yuri smiled brightly and led the man to the nearby cafe. As they sat down, across from each other, Yuri couldn't help but stare at the man. He was definitely the type of boy he used to stalk when he was in school, but that was a different story for another time. His gaze met the eyes of the other man, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A conspiracy theory is an explanation of an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy without warrant. Conspiracy theories generally involve an illegal or harmful act carried out by the government or other powerful actors. The Moon landing is still one of the biggest conspiracy theories in the world. After forty–eight years it is still being debated and discussed in many laboratories, and classrooms across the globe. On July 20, 1969, two American astronauts by the name of Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin allegedly, landed safely on the moon. Some people have reason to believe that the dark interior of the space shuttle looked like the darkness of space, and the circular window gave the circular shape of the earth. The film also states that one of the astronauts used a crescent shape to alter the shape of the earth as they drifted farther into space. The consistency of the video was also at question. The film shows decent quality color video inside of the spaceship, but the film on the moon was black and white. Many conspiracy theorists claim that the video footage was leaked from NASA by accident. When the video footage was leaked conspiracy theorist dissected the footage and made a hypothesis of how the footage was produced. NASA says that every theory is false and they stand behind their statements firm. What motivated the moon landing? The moon landing was highly motivated by the space race between the United States, and the Soviet Union. The space race caused a very tense tone in each country, as they both were trying to be the first to make it into space. The Soviet Union made the first milestone by launching Sputnik into the earth's orbit on October 4, 1957. Sputnik was the world 's first manmade satellite to make it into outer space.
