   o How did they grade a project versus a written report?


One rule: standardized assessment tools like ISTEP are
  not an option, since those are mandatory, and not
  something that the teacher can choose

  2. It is important to inform the students that both summative and formative assessments are an integral part of information gathering. Summative Assessments are given periodically to determine at a particular point in time what students know and do not know. It can be given at class, school, district, state and national levels. The key is to think of summative assessment as a means to gauge, at a particular point in time, student learning relative to content standards. They can be used to help evaluate the effectiveness of programs, school improvement goals, alignment of curriculum, or student placement in specific programs. Formative Assessment is part of the instructional process. When integrated into the instructional process, it can inform the teachers on necessary adjustments related to the teaching process, like the content, instructional strategies, etc. while they are happening. We can think of formative assessment as "practice. ” You can also use the example of the driving practice and driver ’s license test to illustrate the difference of these two kinds of assessments.
