Comminities and activism - Presentation Transcript

    1. Communities & Activism David Phillips
    2. Learning Outcomes
      • To understand how individuals seek change and react to attempts by organisations to prevent certain activities online
      • To provide examples of differences in motivations to participate in online communities.
    3. Activism comes in many forms
      • Small groups (blogs, usenet, Virtual environments)
      • Hackers (malware, viruses, image hacks, single/multiple activities)
      • File sharing (MP3 etc)
      • Enthusiasts (copy images, Internet Agency, Open Source movement)
      • Organised groups (McSpotlight)
      • Activist portals
      • NGA's (FoE)
      • Corporations
    4. Why people get involved
      • Instrumentality (change social & political environments),
      • Identity (actor's identification with a group) and
      • Participation (expression of actor's views/values)
      • Klandermans, B. (2004)
    5. New Social Movements Theory
      • Emerged in Europe as a response to identity and culture-driven social movements, new social movement theory focuses on ‘the content of movement ideology, the concerns motivating activists, and the arena in which collective action was focused – that is, cultural understandings, norms, and identities rather than material interests and economic distribution’ (Williams 2004, 92).
    6. The Framing Perspective
      • The Framing Perspective is influenced by new social movement theory (group identity, lifestyle e.g. Feminism, environmental, non-consumer but grow into Chelsea tractor ownership), the ‘framing’ perspective is the most well-known culturalist approach in Northern American social movement studies (Williams 2004, 93).
    7. Social networks
      • The Social Networks Approach aims ‘to explore in greater detail the web of multiple ties that make up a movement’ (Diani 2004, 339), the social networks approach is a recent development in social movement theory and the only strand dealing explicitly with all three motives for social movement participation (Instrumentality, Identity and Participation)
