• Autism is a developmental disorder that
causes impaired social interaction and
communication and bad, repetitive
behavior.
• Children with Autism may go to regular
high schools or they may have to take
special classes.
• Born with it and can have it through
adulthood.
• It is also known as the spectrum disorder.
3. Causes of the Disorders
• No one knows for sure
how a child gets
autism.
• May be caused by
differences in their
brain chemicals from
something in their
genes.
• Results from a
combination of the
genes and not just
one affected gene.
4. Incident Rates and Risk Factors
• About 1 in 150 or, 6 in 1000, children are
affected by autism
• 4 times as many boys than girls will get the
disorder
• Twins are more likely to get it and identical
twins are highly likely to get the disorder
• Usually runs in the family
• If older parents give birth that increases the
risk
• Having another genetic disorder can also
increase the risk of the disorder such as
epilepsy or if there were problems during
pregnancy.
5. Symptoms
• Not all children have the same symptoms and
some may have severe or only mild autism.
• They rather be alone and don’t seem to want
to make friends
• Find it hard to communicate, use gestures
when talking, and wont make eye contact
• Sounds are louder, lights are brighter, and
smells are stronger
• Some will have mental retardation but others
may be very intelligent
• Wont react to different “social cues” like
smiling

Possibly seizures or gastrointestinal issues

• Autism is diagnosed at a younger
age(under four years old)
• No actual way to determine if a child has
autism
• Will run other test to eliminate other
diseases
• Specialists will compare the child with
others to determine if they have autism
• Can not be treated by a surgery

• Medicine will help lessen
the anger and attention
problems
• They can take therapy
to help them learn
simple basics such as
learning to talk and
interact with other kids
• Different therapy-
speech, physical, music,
occupational, and/or
hearing vision.
