AUTISM
In infant and toddler
What is autism?
 Autism is a complex developmental
disability that typically appears during
the first three (3) years of life due to a
neurological disorder that affects the
functioning of the brain.
 Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
appears in infancy and early
childhood, causing delays in many
basic areas of development.
• Speech and
language (verbal
communications).
• Non verbal
communications.
• Relating to others
and the world
around them (social
communications).
Some
children with
autism have
only mild
impairments,
while others
have more
obstacles to
overcome in
the following
three areas:.
Discussion about
Autism are
Increasing Lately
WHY?
Statistic on Autism
 A feasibility study on the use of
Modified Checklist For Autism in
Toddlers (MCHAT) screening among
children of 18 to 36 months of age
in child health clinics by Ministry of
Health Malaysia, the prevalence of
ASD in Malaysia was approximately
1.6 in 1000.
 In USA, the overall prevalence of
ASD is 14.7 per 1000 (1 in 68)
children aged 8 years and the
prevalence shows an increasing
trend over the years.
 A study of a 0-17 year olds resident
in Stockholm between 2001-2007
found a prevalence rate of 11.5 in
1,000.

Autism is Treatable.

Each child or adult with autism is unique and, so,
each autism intervention plan should be tailored to
address specific needs.
Parents, teachers and therapists will all work
together to integrate their approaches across the
child’s daily life
Speech
language
therapy (SLT)
Occupational
therapy (OT)
Sensory
integration
therapy (SIT)
Physical
therapy (PT)
Social skills
therapy (SST)

and self-care
skills.
(SIT)

touch, smell,
sight and
sound.
Focuses on :
“Available”
mode for
learning and
social
interactions
(PT)
Motor skills
such as
sitting,
walking,
running and
jumping.
Focuses on :
Improve poor
muscle tone,
balance and
coordination
(SST)
Designed to
teach social
interactions
skills, from
simple to
difficult skills.
Focuses on :
eye contact,
sharing toys,

to a playdate
As a parent, you
never want to
believe that your
precious bundle
has a problem.
But when it comes
to autism,
catching it early—
ideally by the age
of eighteen (18)
months—makes a
huge difference.
But no matter your child's age, don't lose hope. Treatment can reduce the
disorder's effects and help your child learn, grow, and thrive.
