half of the semester this writing class will cover writing descriptive,
comparison, cause-effect and classification paragraphs. In the second half
of the semester we will transition to writing essays, and we will study
descriptive, comparison, cause-effect and classification essays.

• Attendance
As this class only meets once a week it is important to attend every class.
If you miss a class make sure to find out what you have missed, and any
assignments you need to do before the next class.
• Plagiarism
Plagiarism, in the context of this class, is submitting any writing which you
did not write. If you copy a sentence or paragraph from Wikipedia, or the
Korea Herald, or any online or offline news site, magazine, book etc. and
use it in your essay it will be regarded as plagiarism and you will receive
0% for that paragraph or essay.
All the writing you submit must be YOUR writing.
6.
7. Writing requirements
• Most of your weekly writing will be done in a
notebook that is only for this class.
• When I ask you to submit homework, it must
be typed and printed on computer. It must be
on A4 paper or 8.5X11.
• All work should have
– Name
– Student Number
8. Other Rules for Class
Homework and attendance policy:
• Absent = -1%
• 05 – 30 minutes late = -.50%
• 30+ minutes late = Absent (-1%)
• Please provide a document if you think your absence was unavoidable (i.e.
note from doctor, letter from your department, etc)
• All homework must be done and turned in on time in order to receive full
credit. No homework= no points. Late homework = -.50%
• Homework will usually be collected at the very beginning of class. If you
are not ready to give it to me, it will be marked as late. This includes
writing your name, stapling, or organizing your work. Homework should
be ready before you walk in the door.
• If you are absent, you are still responsible for homework assigned on the
day you are absent. You must contact the teacher or a classmate to get
the homework assignment. No exceptions.
• Students who copy other students' work or copy from the Internet will
receive O points for their work.
9. • Students who sleep, do other class work, use cell phones or other non
class-related tasks in class will receive a reduced participation score. I do
take regular notes on which students actively participate and which do
not. This directly affects your final grade.
• Bringing your own book is also part of participation. If you bring no book
or if you borrow a friend's book which has the work completed in it, you
will receive a reduced participation score.
• Bringing pen and paper or notebook is part of your participation. You will
need something to write on and write with in each class. You must bring it.
If you have to borrow from other students you can receive reduced points.
• NOTE: Due to the size of the classes, I will not be grading or returning all
homework.
• No cheating on tests. Automatic F for cheating.
• Food and gum are not allowed. It’s hard to focus on the assignment and
speak with food in your mouth. Drinks will be allowed but do not leave a
mess.
• Drinks will be banned if students leave empty containers in the room after
class.
• Bathroom: Please go to the bathroom quietly if you need to. Do not ask
me. But if you stay too long I will reduce your participation points.
10. Writing Sample
• Please use the paper I give you to write a
short paragraph about what you did over
winter vacation.
• Don’t forget your name and student number.
