5. Some questions about Trade
AssociationsWhy do businesses like the trade association models so much? What is their
most basic ideology?
At its most basic level a trade association’s premise is that more can be achieved
as a group than can be handled alone. By pooling resources and knowledge,
many businesses can work together as one unit to support, research and
represent issues that are related to the specific industry that the business are
involved in.
6. Some questions about Trade
AssociationsWhat does a trade association do that a business cannot do for itself?
What will our association do for us, now and in the future?
Trade associations have traditionally engaged in lobbying and guiding
governmental regulation of their industries; in developing standards and best
practices; in providing education and professional development for those
employed in their industry; in promoting the products of their industry to the public;
and in acting as a watchdog for negative impressions of their industries.
7. Some questions about Trade
AssociationsWhat will our association do for us, now and in the future?
One traditional function of an association is to aggregate knowledge for stakeholders across a relatively
narrow band of interest. The American Beekeeping Federation, for example, provides access to a wide
variety of publications on beekeeping, links to beekeeping supplies, and training classes on beekeeping.
Of course, the internet has made much of this aggregation function less challenging, but people still want
to meet folks with experience and interest in their fields, to gather together to work for the common good,
to get updated on news and trends in their fields, and to share knowledge and ideas.
8. What is the difference between a trade
association and a trade union?
A trade Union provides help,
support and representation to
people who work for companies
in a particular trade.
A trade association is a group of
companies, etc who all provide the
same or similar services and the
aim of the association would be to
represent the interests of that
trade, or to lobby on its behalf.
