Terms Surface, investment, inland water, Ocean, artificial shipping, speediest, cargoes. 
Facts 1. The modes of transport are brought under three divisions. They are Land Transport, 
water transport, Air transport
2. Land transport refers to the carriage of men and materials through the surface of the 
earth. 
3. Road transport is used for short distances and carrying light valuable goods. 
4. Rail transport is the cheapest and quickest means of transport for bulky goods over 
long distances. 
5. Water is the oldest and cheapest means of transport inland water transport and ocean 
transport are water transport. 
6. Inland water ways include rivers and canals. 
7. Ocean transport is also called shipping as the ship is the carrier in this form of transport 
8. Air transport is very recent origin and ha made rapid progress especially after the II 
world war.

Major Modes of transport 
Minor 1. Road transport is superior to other means of transport in the sense that it can serve even 
the interior part of the nation 
2. Water is used as a mode of transport , it is known as “water transport”. It is much 
suitable for bulky and cheaper goods. 
3. Air Transport is very recent origin and has made rapid progress especially after the II 
world war.
Pre-requisites Students may have knowledge about the meaning of transport.

3. pictures are showing the transportation 
Classroom Interaction Procedure Pupil’s responses 
The teacher presents the topic ‘modes of transport’. By testing the entry behaviour, 
What do you mean Transport? 
What are the importance of transport? 
By hearing the answer of the students, teacher divides the students into groups.
Activity 
Then Teacher supplies a handout 
Classify and arrange the Modes of Transport

Coastal 
Overseas 
Water

After few minutes teacher asks the group leader to come forward and read answers. 
After hering the answer of the student, teacher displays the first slide.

Land Transport refers to the carriage of men and materials

road transport and rail transport. 
Then teacher explains the meaning and then teacher displays second slide

Road Transport used for short distances and carrying light valuable 
goods. It is the oldest and simplest form of Transport. 
Teacher explain the first type of land transport is road transport. 
Then teacher displays the next slide.

Water transport is the oldest and cheapest means of transport. It is much 
suitable for bulky and cheaper goods. 
Inland Water Transport 
Inland water ways include rivers and canals. Rivers are the gift of nature 
for the use of mankind. But canals are artificial water ways

Transport by sea is ocean transport .It is also called shipping as the ship is 
the carrier in this form of transport .Ocean transport is coastal shipping and 
overseas shipping.

Air Transport 
Air Transport is the speediest and most costly means of transport. It is of 
very recent origin and has made rapid progress. It is used to carry passengers and 
articles of high value.
