2. WRITING PROMPT OVERVIEW
• Quick overview: Writing prompts should be one page written or half a
page typed, 12-point font and double spaced. The more you write the
more prompts you get credit for.
– I.E. if you type a one page double spaced prompt, you will earn TWO writing
prompts
• You need to have 15 writing prompts at the end of the quarter. If you
complete your writing prompts after week 7 let’s say, you are done and
do not need to do any more for the remaining weeks.
3. WEEK 1: YOU WILL COMPLETE AT LEAST 2 WRITING
PROMPTS EVERY WEEK
• Week one writing prompt type: Free Write (This week you are free to write about what you want to. I would like to get a feel for
your writing in this first week. Each of the following weeks I will give you a type of writing prompt to complete, such as
argumentative, informative, etc. )If you have ANY questions please ask!
Week 1: Free Write
When you wake up from dreams, they become real.
What is your life like now?
If you could go back in time and change one thing in
history what would it be?
Write a note to your 12 year old self.
The saying goes “Money can’t buy happiness.” Do you
agree or disagree?
You have 3 wishes. You can’t wish for money or more
wishes, what do you wish for?
You wake up and you are one of ten people left on
earth. What do you do?
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it
be and why?
If you could study one subject not offered in school what
would it be and why?

4. WEEK 2: WRITING PROMPTS 3 & 4
This week you will be completing two argumentative writing prompts.
An argumentative essay is a type of writing that requires a writer to defend a position on a
topic using evidence from personal experience, literature, historical examples, and research
to support his or her viewpoint.
Answer the writing prompt by stating and defending your side on each argument

Do shows like ‘16 and Pregnant’ promote or

5. WEEK 3: WRITING PROMPTS 5 & 6
This week you will be completing two cause and effect writing prompts. Cause and effect
writing is a type of expository writing. Expository writing is just writing meant to inform or
explain.
Cause and effect writing is where the author analyzes the reasons for--and/or the
consequences of--an action, event, or decision.
Answer the writing prompt by answering or explaining one of the prompt ideas below.
Week 3: Cause and Effect
What is the impact of technology on religion?
What causes kids to try drugs for the first time?
Explain the causes of the popularity of some fast
food chains.
What are some problems that city life creates for
people and the environment?
What were the causes of the American Civil War?
How well do you think standardized testing
measures your abilities?
How big is bullying or cyber bullying in your
school or community?
What are the effects on children who grow up
without a male role model in the home?
What would happen to crime rates if our 2nd
amendment right was abolished?
6. WEEK 4: WRITING PROMPTS 7 & 8
This week you will write a “How To” manual on something you consider yourself an expert on or at least something you could
teach others how to do.
Explain step by step how to do one of the following things. You may either make your manual a page, in order to count for

7. WEEK 5: WRITING PROMPTS 9 & 10
This week you will be completing two persuasive writing prompts.
Persuasive writing utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts
to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action.
Pick a side and persuade me. Remember to convince me…give me reasons why I should side with you.
Week 5: Persuasive Writing
Should students have to pass a basic skills test to
graduate?
Should boys and girls be in separate classes?
Should there be more than just a “boys” and
“girls” bathroom?
Should girls be allowed to play on boys sports
teams? And visa versa?
Should abortion be legal?
Should the government censor internet
information they deem inappropriate?
Should the driving age be raised to 21?
Should the drinking age be lowered?
Should celebrities have more privacy rights?
Do professional athletes get paid too much?
Should teachers be allowed to have a concealed
weapon at school?
Should public schools teach world religions?
Should product testing be allowed or animals,
humans, neither, or both?
8. WEEK 6: WRITING PROMPTS 11 & 12
This week you will be completing two free writing prompts.
You may write about one of the topics below or something else if you run it by me first. You may find ideas on my

Pick a person you admire and write “The Official

Write about a time that you were most
disappointed.
The first one way spaceship to mars leaves. We
find out the next day that one of the men on
board killed his wife before he left. What do we
do?
You have the key to repel aliens should they
You are 9 years old. Everyone in the world above
the age of 10 dies suddenly. What does the world
look like 10 years later when you are 19?
What would you change if you could travel to the
past? You get 24 hours in the past, you can go to
as many years/days as you want…but you only get
24 hours.

If you were forced to be turned into an animal
which would you pick, why?, what would you do
as that animal?

9. WEEK 7: WRITING PROMPTS 13 & 14
Prompt number one: This week you will be writing your maid of honor/best
man speech for one of your two writing prompts. Your best friend is getting
married to the man/woman of their dreams. If your best friend is not with the
person you see them marrying…pretend it is 10 years from now and you can
make up that person. Remember this is about your best friend and their
significant other, not YOU and them.
Prompt number two: for the week is a definition prompt. You are to define
something.
You may use one of the following examples or something you come up with.
• The definition of a best friend is…
• The definition of a teacher is…
• The definition of a twitter flexer is…
• The definition of a sneak diss is….
10. WEEK 8: WRITING PROMPTS 15 & 16
This week you will be completing two descriptive writing prompts.
A descriptive essay is when you describe something to your reader by painting a picture for your reader. You will do
this by describing something in thorough detail. Let the reader know how it would look, smell, make you feel, etc.

Describe how a toddler sees the world.
Describe an event that happened in your life.
Describe a time you went to the doctor/ER.
Describe how it feels to be someone’s
daughter/son or brother/sister.
Describe something you are obsessed with/really
enjoy.

If you do not want to use one of these descriptive
essays describe one of the following of your
choosing.

This week you will be completing two narrative writing prompts.
A narrative essay is when you tell a story about an experience or event whether it be true or fictitious in nature.
