  • 1. America Compared Immigrants and Cities By: Kyle Pollitt
  • 2. The Great Transatlantic Migrations
    • Europeans had established a pattern of migrating within their continent in search of new jobs.
    • Vast open territory acquired in small, affordable pieces and new freedoms made the US a desired destination.
    • Some Europeans who migrated to South America left after a few years and came to the US and Canada or returned to Europe.
  • 3. The City in the Land of the Dollar
    • The fastest growing city in the US in the late 19 th century was Chicago where the skyscraper was invented and steel frame construction was first used.
    • After the famous Chicago fire, the city was once again a blank slate to be rebuilt using these technologies.
    • With Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, a kind of world fair brought to the city in 1893, architects used neoclassic European design to “b e autify ” the city.
