Editor's Notes
Your pitch is your opportunity to engage me into your company value and connect me to what you are offering. The shorter you can make your pitch and pique my interest the more likely I will want to know more and ask questions. Think of your pitch as a way to hook someone into wanting to know more. In this presentation I will share with you the keys to presenting a memorable pitch in two minutes.
It is important to introduce yourself and your company name and what business the company is in. Think of this as a 10 second introduction. Start off strong.
What is your product and service you are offering for sale? Be clear and to the point. No need to ramble on. Think about how you can share your product or service in 20 seconds or less.
Why should anyone care about your product or service? What problem are you solving? What pain are relieving? What is the reason I am going to want to purchase your product or service? This is where you need to “hook” your audience. If your value is not clearly articulated your audience will start losing interest. Think about how you can communicate your value in 20 – 30 seconds.
You will want to be very clear about your market, the size of your market, and your target customer when making this element of your pitch. The more precise you can get the more you will show your audience you understand your market and customer. Keep in mind the world is not your market and your customer is needs to be defined clearly. Example: Our main market is the commercial construction industry and our target customer are electricians that service the commercial construction industry. Again, think about how to communicate in 20 seconds.
It is very important to understand how you are gong to reach your customer. Is it through direct marketing? Targeted social media campaign through the Internet? Strategic partnerships that promote your product or service? What is the channel that will allow your customer to know about your product or service?
What are your main revenue streams? How are you going to make money? Be realistic and focus in on how much revenue you project you will make from your product or service in the first year. It is important for me to understand you have thought through how you are going to generate revenue for your business.
Do you need money? If so how much? Remember to think about how LITTLE money you need instead of thinking about how MUCH money you need. You don’t always need money. What other resources do you require to advance your business? Marketing person? Connections to manufacturing? A programmer? Think beyond money and focus on explaining what resources you need to advance your business into the marketplace.
Make sure to have a clear ask as the final point with which to end your pitch. What are you asking for to advance your business? Is it introductions to customers who would buy your product or service? Is it connections to a specific person or talent set that can accelerate your businesses? Is there a specific person that has critical information your business needs? Is it seed funding to help accelerate your revenue generation? Think creatively about your ask. It does not have to be about funding as much as the it is about the main thing you need right now to advance your business forward.
Direct entrepreneurs to assemble with their teams and start working on the development of their two minute pitch. Let them know they have 20 minutes to work on their pitch and then will give it live in front of the mentors and entrepreneurs present. Make sure to encourage startup teams to choose one person to make the pitch (Their best and most passionate sales person) as “team” pitches have a great potential to be a train wreck;-)
