LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU
HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO FULL PRODUCTION?
EVALUATION QUESTION 7
• In our preliminary task on the left, we had not put the character in centre frame, the camera also shook
during the shot. Thus the action is not really the focal point for the audience. We learnt from this and
made sure to use a tripod and position the camera correctly in Blank Canvas. This meant that the scene
had a greater impact on the audience.
USE OF CAMERA: FRAMING
• In our preliminary task, there was a problem with our continuity editing. My hands moved between
two shots (Circled in red). In Blank Canvas we made sure that whenever we took shots of the same
movement from different angles that everything looked the same (Circled in Green).
EDITING AND CONTINUITY
• In our preliminary task we didn’t use any type of effects which made the film seem bland and have no
texture. In Blank Canvas we used a slight blue tint on each frame, and then we also used a CCTV effect
on other shots. This gave the piece a distinctive feel and added character to the shots.
EFFECTS
• Our preliminary task was meant to be a comedy and this was shown by the use of mise-en-scene. You
can see the character in frame holding a fake rabbit and smoking a pipe. We found that showing the
genre through mise-en-scene was important so we carried this over to Blank Canvas. The character is in
bandages which sets it up for the thriller genre. The colour of the scene is abnormal and there are many
unidentifiable items in the scene creating mystery.
MISE-EN-SCENE
• In the preliminary task we only used diegetic sound, the only sound we had was the sound characters could
hear such as their voices and doors opening. In Blank Canvas we decided to add Non-diegetic sound into the
mix as well, this added atmosphere to the piece. The characters could hear each other but the music we had
overlaying the video was non-diegetic so only the audience knew it was there.
SOUND
• In the preliminary task the only specific lighting used was natural light which meant we didn’t get the
lighting we wanted for all the shots. In Blank Canvas we used a studio light so all of the shots looked the
same. We were also more careful to abide by the 180 degree rule in Blank Canvas as we had the light by
the wall we needed to make sure that wasn’t in shot. In our preliminary task we weren’t as strict about
the 180 degree rule so some of our shots look a bit weird.
LIGHTING, SET, AND THE 180 DEGREEE RULE
• In Blank Canvas we decided to have our titles superimposed over our film so that the action was not
interrupted by a different screen with a title on it such as in our preliminary task. This made the film run
more smoothly and keep the atmosphere throughout.
