1. EVALUATION ACTIVITY 7
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU
HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO FULL PRODUCT?
2. CAMERA WORK
• We have used a lot more shots in our main production compared to the shots we used in our preliminary task. We also have used more camera
movement in our final production in comparison to the preliminary task.
• In our preliminary task we used a few shots and angles, we used mostly eye level angle we also used over the shoulder shot and a low angle shot. For
camera movement we only used tilting other than that we haven't used any other type of movements. However in our final production we used a wide
range of shots and angles to really make our video stand out. We used extreme close up of the charters face to really show the characters emotions and
face expressions so that way the audience are able to empathise with the character. We also used POV ( point of view) shot. This was used when John
was on the floor and he looking at Raven coming closer and closer to John. John was looking at Raven from a low angle to show John is hopeless and he
has no powder over Raven as Raven is the stronger and superiors character at that moment. We also used I establishing shot to show the audience
where the scene is set and also to show the state that John is in as he is in need of help, but there is no one that can help him as he is all by him self
alone. This gives a clear idea and helps the audience to see what John is really going through and what's his current situation.
• In terms of shots there wasn’t as many shots that we used in the preliminary task we mostly used: wide shots, mediums shots and close ups.
• When planning for our final production we made sure that we use a wide range of shots and a wider verity of shots so that it can create excitement for
the audience and also get them more engaged.
• For example we used a point of view shot to show the view from John's perspective so that the audience can really connect with the character and be in
the characters shoes. Also we used the wide shot to show where John is at and to show that there is no hope left for John as he is all alone by him self.
• Finally there was not much of camera movement in the preliminary task other than tilting, besides that everything else was very static and lacklustre.
We had to make sure that we use more movement in our final production such as panning and tilting when it was necessary and this would create
something engaging.
• We used a tiling movement slowly tilting up so that it builds tension as to show what Raven looks like. Also this helped the audience to see what Raven
was wearing and the weapon he was holding in his hand which was the broken glass bottle.
• In terms of composition, the composition of our shots has improved significantly from our preliminary task. The shots that we used in our preliminary
task were really simple and basic they were often wide shot or a close up most of the time.
• The framing also improved significantly as we knew how to frame everything better from trying again and again we have learnt how to frame better so
that everything comes with in the frame s that we don’t miss out on any crucial bits.
3. EDITING
• In terms of editing we have used a lot more editing techniques in comparison to our preliminary task. In the preliminary task we only used straight cuts and we
used basic techniques because we didn’t have much experience on what editing techniques to use.
• For our final production we used a lot more editing techniques such as jump cuts, fading in and many more… the use of more complex editing helped to intrigue
the audience. We had to make it clear for the audience between the two timelines, we had to make it clear that the first scene is the current place and time that
the character John is at, the second scene is a flash back that John is having. This was only achieved through good editing of the film.
As you can see there are 2 different scenes, there is a clear difference between the two scenes. The first scene you can see that John is in the present time, in the
second scene you can see that it’s a flashback. This has been achieved through the use of editing; changing the colouring of the footage, lighting and costume that
John is wearing.
Lighting
We used high key lighting for the flash back. The high key lighting is very bright and connotes a flash back. Compared to the second scene we used low key lighting to
show he is in the present, the low key lighting is very dim and dark. This is a huge contrast in comparison to the high key lighting which really differentiate between
the flash back and the present.
Costume
In the flash back John is wearing a clean white top with blue jeans, this goes to show that john is an average teenager. In the flash back his cloths are nice and clean
and he is well presented. However this is way different to the present as he’s in a sate of mess, his cloths are all dirty, there is a lot of blood on him and his hands are
covered with blood. There is a big contrast between the way he is dressed in both scene, which really shows the audience that one scene John is in the present, and
the other scene John is having a flash back.
Colouring
They’re also a big contrast in colouring, which really shows separation between the flash back and the present. In the present the colouring is really dark and dim, you
are able to see the natural colours of the environment clearly. This however contrast the flash back as every thing is very bright and you can see this glowing light
surrounding John which really makes it look like that John is having a flash back. In this scene you are unable to see the natural colouring the environment that John is
in and this really shows a big difference between the flash back and he present.
4. EDITING
• In our preliminary, the transition from one shot to another was very basic and simple. We only used
straight cuts because we did not know/ had experience in using other type of transition from one scene to
another. How ever straight cuts way very effective as it showed a continuity from one shot to another but
we could have used other transition method, which would have made things slightly more interesting.
• However in our final production we used a variety of transitions methods, which really made a huge
difference to our final production. We used transition methods such as fades this really created a more
dark sinister effect. We used this right at the start so that way the audience know that it’s a horror film.
• We also used straight cuts and jump cuts; this gave a nice follow from one to scene to another so that the
audience is able to understand the story line. We cloud also control the pace by using straight cuts and
jump cuts. We used slow pace to really build the tension bit by bit.
• Furthermore we also used sound much more affectively in our final production. In the our preliminary task
we only used one sound track and the rest it was diegetic sound and dialogue , we didn’t have much of
sound effects. In our final production we used a lot of sound effects not much of dialogue. We used a lot of
sound effects because we really empathises every sound there was. We empathised on every sound effect
because we wanted to build a tense atmosphere so everything in our final product is quiet and every
sound that we used led to the final scene.
5. 180 DEGREE RULE
In our preliminary task, we broke the 180 degree a few times without realising it, so we had to go back and
change it by re doing the scenes in which we broke the 180 degree rule.
When we were filming our final production we did not break the 180 degree as we understood the 180 degree
rule a lot better and we were more familiar with it. The reason this rule is used is because if the rule is broken
it may confuse the audience, and may also lose focus and will lead them to miss out on vital scene of the film,
which is the opening sequence in our case.
MATCH ON ACTION
We also used match on action, for our preliminary task we were not that experienced with match on action
and we were unable to use it properly. In our final production we were more experience on using match on
action and we used a variety of shots. The smother the match on action the more believable our production
will look and achieve a higher quality.
