2. CAMERAWORK…
• In comparison to the preliminary task, the variety
and range of shots that we used increased
dramatically in the final product that we had filmed.
The number of camera movements that we used
also increased.
• In the preliminary task we used simple shots for
example; medium shots, point of view shots, and
over the shoulder the shots.
• However, in the final product we used close up
shots, high angle shots, and also low angle shots.
We did this because we realised that we could
connote the characters facial expression and
emotions through these specific shots.
• The use of high angle shots in the hallway
emphasised the characters vulnerability when she
enters the house. Therefore, this helped to engage
the audience in the film.
3. CAMERAWORK…
• The point of view/over the shoulder shot
of Kristela playing with the Ouija board,
was to show things from certain
characters’ perspectives which helped
the audience to connect with them.
• Wide shots of the living room whilst
Kristela was playing with the Ouija board
also emphasised the location to the
audience.
• However, when planning out our final
product, we ensured to utilise a wide
variety of shots knowing that they would
help us to engage and excite the
audience and create something that was
visually dynamic.
4. CAMERAWORK…
• There were no camera movements in our preliminary task,
meaning that it was all just camera shots of different views.
In the final product, we made use of a few camera
movements which helped to increase or decrease the pace
where necessary.
• We used a low angle movement of when Alannah locked the
door, and slowly moved the camera from her hand to her
facial expression.
• In terms of composition of our shots, we definitely improved
from the preliminary task. Whilst in the preliminary task the
shots were framed very simply and were often too wide.
• In the final product, the framing improved however we
could have done better with the focus of the room.
5. EDITING…
• The editing in our final product was a lot more sophisticated
in comparison to the preliminary task. In the preliminary
the events occur in a chronological order which implies a
linear narrative. As not much happens, (plot-wise) the
preliminary seems quite boring.
• In our final product, we used a lot of jump cuts between
Alannah coming through the door and Kristela in the living
room.
• We used “several cameras” and named them “camera 1”
“camera 2” etc. therefore, we couldn’t really use many
editing techniques in our production.
6. EDITING…
• Similarly in our preliminary task, jump cuts were also used
to transition from the different scenes. We used this editing
technique in our final production as well, however we used
better transitions between the scenes.
• We felt that the jump cuts created a fast pace, just like in
out preliminary task between the different scenes.
• Additionally, we used many different sound effects as there
wasn’t much dialogue between the characters. As a group,
we learnt how important sound effects were in our final
production compared to our preliminary task.
• The sound effects made our final production more
successful, because it created a tense and frightening
atmosphere for the audience.
7. 180 DEGREE RULE…
• In our preliminary task, we ensured
that we didn’t break the 180 degree
rule. In our final production, we were
extra careful that we incorporated the
180 degree rule and did not break it.
• As a group we came to an
understanding that it was not easy to
follow the 180 degree rule because
we filmed a lot of over the shoulder
and point of view shots.
• Therefore we made sure that the
point of view and over the shoulder
shots were filmed carefully, not
breaking the 180 degree rule.
8. MATCH ON ACTION…
• The match on action used in the preliminary task was very
fast pace – the action does not flow smoothly, as a result of
the editing.
• Whereas in our final product the match on action is much
smoother. We also use a wider variety of shots for match on
action e.g. the sequence where Kristela is in the living room
and Alannah walks in the house. The camera cuts between
Kristela standing still next to the Ouija board, then back to
Alannah. When she enters the room Kristela has
disappeared from the room.
9. OVERALL REVIEW…
• Overall, we learnt a lot from our preliminary task. We
ensured that we didn’t make the same mistakes we did in
our final production.
• The editing in our final sequence took much more time and
effort rather than our preliminary task.
• The most important thing we learnt from our preliminary
task was to make sure that we use a wide variety of shots
for our final film and use different editing techniques.
• The thing we found hard whilst filming our final opening
sequence was keeping the camera in focus at all times, as
well as the background and the characters facial espression
in close up shots.
