● Since 2003 Central Northern Regional Library has been putting together a website for the Country Women’s Association of NSW to assist members in finding information for their country of study.
Who are they? ● CWA of NSW began in 1922 ● 11,000 members in 430 local branches across NSW, both country (90%) and metropolitan (10%) ● Part of the largest voluntary women’s organisation in Australia (CWA of Australia). ● An integral part of country life. Members are often very active women in their communities eg local councillors –in that sense they are a good ally to have. Members of Bundarra CWA run our small branch there ● Their main aim is to improve the lives of women and families, particularly those from rural areas. ● Involved in : providing education grants, charity support including material aid to Asia Pacific (raised about $1.25m in last 3 years), support medical research , lobby government at all levels (health, education, transport, social services, environment, land use - definitely not just ‘tea and scones’
Country of Study ● as a member of the ACWW (Associated Country Women of the World) CWA promotes an appreciation and understanding among its members of other cultures ● A different country each year since 1938. ● Activities include International Days, competitions, involvement of local schools, UNE Weekend Study School (we sometimes send a representative)
Our site ● We have been providing info to members since 1992 but found print resources weren’t meeting needs ● We have been putting a website together since 2003 – very basic site at first with about 25 links, now around 160 ● Appreciated especially by those without easy access to a library – remote , still true ● Who is it for? CWA members, schools, other libraries
● The CWA website lists the particular areas that members should cover so that is what we base the structure of our site on. ● We look for sites that are authoritative, up-to-date, appropriate level (kids as well). Try to avoid sites that are too commercial, take too long to load (conscious of varying levels of net speeds). As well as what we know they need for their various activities we now have a good idea of other things they like to see – recipes, history, crafts, women. ● Our IT staff upload pages to our library website. ● also make sure we have sufficient print resources, DVDs, CDs
Promotion of the site ● we go out to CWA branches in our region – branch libraries, CWA halls, sometimes schools are invited ● demonstrate the site, show a DVD, have morning tea/lunch, display books etc, sometimes have some sort of performance or speaker –in Tamworth a Maltese woman talked about her childhood, Scottish drummer and bag pipes in Tamworth, Egyptian belly dancing at Bellata and Narrabri, sometimes there is the opportunity for members to investigate the site themselves, give them a bookmark with our URL ● other ways we promote the site include: local newspapers sometimes turn up, CWA put link on their website, CWA conference this year in Nowra, PLN, Facebook. ● Recently started Tamworth Library Facebook page to promote author talks, storytime etc. ● Also CWA Country of Study Facebook page – still very early days ● Member for staff has a Google alert set up. Chooses the most interesting sites to include plus any others that we come across. There has been an increase in people who ‘like’ us after we have shown the website and explained they can receive updates using Facebook. Try to emphasise that Facebook is another way for them to interact with us and with each other to find info about their Country of Study
Where to now? ● Statistics of use – started using Google Analytics, Spydus LMS doesn’t allow us to monitor usage, about 50 visits/week so far this year, up on last year, about 6 public libraries link to the site, CWA site ● Facebook – will keep adding new country to page each year rather than having a new page for each country so that we build up a group who ‘like’ us ● CWA is looking at ways to stay relevant to members, conscious that like a lot of organisations their membership is declining, looking for ways to attract younger members, hopefully our site helps them to do this.
