This session was led by Rachayita Shah and Ariane Hoy at the Bonner Fall Directors Meeting. This session previewed and gained feedback on aspects of the series designed to help upper class students (specifically juniors) understand the sectors (especially nonprofit) and how they might engage in building the capacity of an organization. This series also focuses on student career development, helping them identify future pathways.

Federal, state and local transportation guidelines strongly encourage or even require that transportation officials conduct “meaningful” public engagement as part of their planning and decision-making processes. But the most well-intentioned efforts can fail to reach low-income and minority communities that are often still not at the table when important decisions are being made. In order for marginalized communities to participate effectively in public process, government agencies and private funders must invest in their time, skills and capacity to engage in time-consuming and complex discussions such as those around transportation, planning and funding decisions. Attendees will discuss what capacity-building is and why it is important, and learn from recent capacity-building efforts in health, community planning and transportation.

A discussion of the unique components will highlight the pioneering journey that the organisation embarked upon towards achieving its goals of attracting, engaging and retaining high-performing employees. It is a well-researched fact that the opportunity for career development and progression is a key driver of employee attraction and engagement. Capacity must be built internally and externally through short-term and long-term plans, on a system as well as localised basis. Value propositions must inspire and endear in order to attract and engage. Actions must speak louder than words. All of these concepts come visibly and vibrantly alive in the novel and leading-edge Code Career program – establishing the organisation firmly as an innovative leader committed to building employee capacity and enhancing employee engagement.

Hear from two states that embarked on a path to collaboration through the Shared Youth Vision project. Learn how New Hampshire and Rhode Island have embraced a journey to effect change to provide an array of services to youth and young adults. In New Hampshire, the process has created one state team, a pilot project team, and twelve local teams focused on collaboration, partnering and resolving gaps in serving multiple state agencies’ neediest young people. In Rhode Island, the partnership has expanded services through the 16 Youth Centers in the state, where partner agencies are collaborating to avail young people opportunities through multiple pathways to education and employment. State Team representatives will share their experiences for bringing together partners to make this partnership a true collaborative and systematic approach for a cross delivery system for young people.

NAF developed a next-generation assessment system designed to model real-world demands, including the integrated application of academic, career-technical and workforce readiness skills. Designed to bridge the gap among high school career-technical programs, post-secondary course articulation, admission policies and workforce readiness, Student Certification Assessment System (SCAS) assesses a broad range of content and skills through rigorous end-of-course exams and evidence-based portfolios combined with supervisor and teacher feedback. This open and interactive panel session will explore benefits and opportunities while providing a problem-oriented approach to implementing and supporting SCAS. Panelists will represent different perspectives, and will be able to offer unique solutions and share practical ideas.
