‘TOP TOWN PLANNER INVESTS £32M IN THE QUAYS’
2014 the year of redeveloping the community, top town planner Michael McGorton has decided to invest £32
million to reconstruct Salford Quays into a more accessible place for people to come. These areas have been
the most attractive architectural designs for many tourists to take photographs published from BBC news due
to the best viewpoints and good landscapes becoming one of the greatest landmarks across many different
parts of the UK such as the heart of London, Edinburgh and Ireland.
A number of striking Salford buildings such as THE LOWRY have been voted as having the one of the best
architectural design in the UK. Originally designed and developed by James Stirling and Michael Wilford in
1986. In 1991, both of these architects were voted as the most impressive architects where they also designed
the Staatsgalerie in London voted as number one in the City of London. In addition to this, MEDIACITY UK has
been voted as the best architectural design in an international competition built and managed by The Peel
Group that is also one of the leading infrastructure, real estate and investments in the UK.
Michael McGorton believes that the heart of Manchester Town is becoming more crowded and crammed for
people to shop. For these people, the Media City UK and The Lowry can be the alternative for these people to
come to. He wants to expand this to make this more suitable for young adults as the place only targets older
people and for those who earn higher incomes. This would be done by introducing new retailer franchises such
as TOPSHOP, Selfridges, H&M, and many more retailers that are suitable for younger consumers as well as
fast-food restaurants such as Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and many more exciting shops that can be found in
Manchester. We managed to interview McGorton and asked him about his ideas about the redevelopment of
Salford Quays:
“Salford Quays will be the most important project that I will be focusing on”
He did not give full details about the new planning as they are still in the process of brainstorming their ideas.
Although he only said this, we know that this may be one of the greatestchallengesthat he will have to face out
of all the projects that he had conducted before. Although there is a rumour about building a train station that
leads from Edinburgh to Portsmouth for people who live outside Manchester.
However, some people believe that this will ruin the brand image of the quays, especially for high-income
consumers who often shops in this area.Interviewing one of the shoppers we came across Margaret who lived
at one of the LOWRY’s apartments and worked for the local council in Swinton: ‘Would this area stay in peace
for the residents? Oodles of sounds would be everywhere; I’ve had enough of the sound of the tram and water
skies already.’
But in spite of that, more people believe that this would be a great opportunity to enhance the population
area, especially to promote the apartments from the opposite sides of the docks with the benefit of this is that
these people living in the area would give them a great viewpoint everyday morning with the eccentric lights
appearing at night. This would also promote the private residential houses nearby beside the quays where
includes from 1-4 bedroom houses and a garage as well as a private park for the children residents and an
indoor swimming pool to spend their quality time with their family, friends and neighbours.
Daughter protects sister from mum
36-year-old mother Shirley has been found dead at the Divan residential home at 37 Meadows Road. It has
been reported that she was repeatedly stabbed to death about five times. Daughter Natalie Divan admits she
stabbed her own mother with a kitchen knife as she was not mentally herself and attempted to kill her
blameless 6-year-old sister Amy. Natalie now prisoned and waiting for her trial next week believes that she

had no choice but to commit this crime. Auntie Meg takes the same side and claimed that Shirley had brutally
abused her own daughters after her dreadful divorce with her ex-husband who had an affair with her
childhood best friend. Shirley had no one to physically blame but her daughters who had nothing to do with
their parents’ divorce. Natalie who spoke about why she did it ‘I had a choice, either had to kill mum or lose
my sister who hasn’t done anything wrong, calling the police would’ve been too late.’ A social worker of these
two children who talked about this issue ‘I think Natalie is a very good child, she wasn’t sure what to do at that
moment. After what happened, this is the cause of abusing children who hadn’t done anything wrong or had
nothing to do with their parent’s experience. Child helpline should have done something right away, if they
were aware this situation wouldn’t have gotten any bigger. We know most of the children here cannot face
them as they might be embarrassed to do so.’ An estimate of 15% children in the UK is experiencing the same
situation as these two children. Any relatives or friends that have a suspicion on these events happening, they
should call child helpline such as NSPCC which fully supports them.
