The document summarizes the June 2016 issue of Harrow People, a magazine published by Harrow Council. It introduces the new Leader of Harrow Council, Cllr Sachin Shah, and covers his first day visiting various local services. It also announces the selection of Cllr Rekha Shah as the new Mayor of Harrow and her choice of charities. Additionally, it provides an update on housing improvements and regeneration projects in the borough and promotes a local business called Made by Lo.

Council as part of keeping local people informed. It
is distributed to every home in Harrow and all local
libraries. Comments, products and services published
do not necessarily carry the council’s endorsement.
Cllr Sachin Shah
Leader of the Council
Thankfully I’m a morning
person and am normally up
and working by 6am. However,
instead of my usual work on
Friday, 20 May – my first day
as Leader of the Council – I
joined our bin crews on their
morning rounds.
Harrow Council runs so many
local services that residents
rely on, including many that
people don’t always think
of, and I think it is important
to spend my first few weeks
as Leader seeing how they
work. You can read more
about the amazing places
and people I visited on day
one, on pages 6 and 7.
As a local Harrow boy, born
in Northwick Park Hospital,
I want to end on a personal
note. For me, as Leader of the
Council, I will always make
sure that those who cannot
stand up for themselves
are heard. At the end of
my time as Leader, if I can
say that Harrow Council
has used its powers to deal
with inequalities across the
borough, I will be really proud.
I hope you can all join me in
sharing this vision.

It can be a problem, especially
where schools neighbour small
residential streets that were
never designed to take school-
run traffic.
We’re working with these
schools to encourage parents
to leave the car at home
and we’re helping to make
walking and cycling to school
a practical and safe option.
Schools offer free advice to
families on the safest and
healthiest ways to get about
and have plans in place to
change travel behaviour and
get people out of their cars.
Our parking enforcement team
use CCTV cars to stop parents
parking dangerously outside
schools and can issue fines
when they see the rules being
flouted. If you have to drive
your child to school, please
drive safely and considerately.
If your child’s school is a

The Start Here project helps Harrow people to
jump-start their business plans by utilising vacant
shop space. Lots of budding entrepreneurs have
already benefitted from using our pop-up shop on
The Bridge, Wealdstone. Its success has helped us
to extend the scheme to the former Rayners Lane
Library, which will also become a testing ground for
new commercial ventures. If you have a
start-up business that needs a helping hand and

... STANMORE LIBRARY
Pretty disgusting, right? And what
about urinating in public? Also
pretty horrible, we think. That’s
why we’d like to use new powers
to fine people who commit these
and other ‘environmental crimes’.
We already issue fines to people
we see dropping litter – would you
like us to be able to tackle these
other problems in the same way?
Before doing so, we’re obliged
to consult the people of Harrow,
and so would really appreciate
your views on these issues. To
take part in the consultation go
to www.harrow.gov.uk/pspo - the
survey takes about five minutes
to complete and, as well as the
above issues, also covers dog
fouling, smoking in play areas and
inconsiderate parking.
What’s
happening
with...?
Once upon a time there was
a library that was dull, boring
and in need of some love
and attention. Happily the
story has a happy ending,
because after its recent
refurbishment, Stanmore
Library is now a bright and
attractive place to relax,
learn, work and study. And
it’s also now more than just a
place to borrow books – the
new gallery and studio space
can be hired for meetings,
workshops and exhibitions;
there’s new work and study
areas; lovely furniture, fresh
décor and digital resources
befitting a 21st century
learning environment.

Harrow one of the safest boroughs in London!
Our new Mayor is Cllr
Rekha Shah, who has
represented Wealdstone
on the Council since 2002.
Born in Mumbai, Cllr Shah
came to Harrow in 1977,
where she worked as a
social worker for many
years. Cllr Shah is the
country’s first woman of
Jain faith to hold the title of
mayor. Talking about her
nominated charities, the
Mayor said: “It’s important
that we look out for one
another in times of need,
that’s why I’ve chosen to
support Parkinson’s UK
and Harrow Bereavement
Care. Both do amazing
work to help people
through life-changing
experiences”.
The Mayor also wants
to encourage more
people, especially
those of Asian origin, to
pledge to donate their
organs after they die. On
average, patients from
black, Asian and minority
ethnic communities wait
a year longer for a kidney
transplant than white
patients. Got to www.

find out more.

Cllr Shah met local businesses at
the council’s Start Here pop-up
shop in Rayners Lane. Waverley
George, who sells her Waverley G

“It’s such a fantastic scheme for
local businesses and entrepreneurs.
The local feedback has been great.”

hat would you do with
£1million? Around the
world this would get
you a ski chalet in Verbier, a villa
in Barbados or a semi-detached
house in Pinner.
We have an extra £1million to
spend on our 5,000 tenants’
homes thanks to getting the very
best from our contracts.
Our housing maintenance
programme is our biggest ever.
It runs until 2020 and in its first
year saw more than 130,000
tiles laid in 578 new kitchens
and bathrooms; and more than
35 miles of electrical wiring for
92 Council homes – enough to
connect Harrow to Sevenoaks!
Councillor Glen Hearnden, who
oversees our housing budget, said
the saving was good news.
“This proves the council can
do more for less, deliver great
services for our residents and use
taxpayers’ money efficiently,”
he said.
“It’s our biggest ever programme
of improvements – and at a
cheaper price.”
Old leaking roofs were replaced
with energy-efficient ones;
draughty windows given double-
glazing; and 250 A+ rated
boilers were installed to replace
old, inefficient ones.
Some estates will even get a
makeover – with eco wall insulation
and a sleek new look.
More than 100 residents of
Grange Farm in South Harrow
gathered to share their views
on the estate’s £100 million
redevelopment, the largest in
the borough. The regeneration
will take place over the next
four years and will see the
282 outdated, poorly insulated
homes replaced with 568 new
homes. A steering group of 16
residents formed to help shape
the new project. They led their
first meeting in April to hear
the views of everyone who
lives at Grange Farm.
The group’s chairman, Ken
Woods, told us they were
‘overjoyed’ with the great
turnout and added: “It’s
a testament to the power of
door-knocking and speaking
directly with people.”
Overall, residents at the
meeting said they were happy
with the planned upgrade to
their homes and were positive
about the steering group’s
work with the regeneration
project team and architects
HawkinsBrown.
A planning application will
be submitted this month.

In Harrow we consume too much sugar and fatty
food. This means higher levels of obesity, tooth
decay and Type 2 diabetes.
Our young people are particularly at risk – by the
age of 10 over a third of Harrow children are obese.
But with a few simple steps this can change...

park life
n The playing of cricket here
predates both the housing that now
borders the park and indeed the park
itself, which was established in the
1930s. In 1888 Harrow Town Cricket

become West Harrow Recreation

in the early 20th century. Our picture

The main event was, as always, Ye

This year 16 teams competed,
sampling beer along the way in time-
honoured fashion.
Well done to winners Daniel Carney

reat news for Queensbury
residents! Last month, the new
wetlands at Queensbury Park
officially opened following two years of
transformation.
The disused, fly-tipped and overgrown
park was once an eyesore. Thanks to joint
work between the council, waterway charity
Thames 21 and the Environment Agency,
we’ve restored the local river – Kenton
Brook – and improved flood defences.
Your new wetland now has better water,
vegetation, wildlife and biodiversity. So
whether you want to relax in beautiful
scenery, discover wildlife or enjoy a walk –
there is something for everyone.
Thames 21, which works with
communities in London to improve rivers,
canals, ponds and lakes, will be delivering
activities including riverside clear-ups for
schools and families.
Vicky D’Souza, project officer at the
charity, told us: “This new wetland in
Harrow is a big win for London’s
wildlife and communities.
“Wetlands provide a
much-needed home
for wildlife such
as dragonflies,
aquatic life and
birds, yet they
are also a vital
part of the urban
landscape.”

iresh Satkunarajah is a
street magician with a
growing reputation. At 13
he was a pretty typical teenager,
but a chance encounter with a
book set him on a new course.
Now known professionally as Nio,
magic has opened up a whole
new world of possibility for this
Harrow star.
Nio told us: “I was revising in
Roxeth Library when I came
across David Blaine’s
autobiography –
everything else
stems from that
moment.
“I was
academically
okay at school, but a bit lazy –
magic became my passion and
I’ve never looked back.
“I used to practise at the back of
the class and the reactions I got
from friends really spurred me on.
Like any performer, I thrive on the
energy that a crowd creates.
“I love performing and I
love seeing people’s reactions
when I do something
apparently impossible
right in front of them
– those few minutes
of wonder make them feel alive –
I really think it’s that positive.”
Magic has propelled Nio on
an improbable career from his
Harrow home to his new part-time
base in Dubai, where his expert
card manipulation at corporate
events has gained both celebrity
admirers and financial backing:
“Never in a million years did I
think that 52 pieces of paper
could change my life – those plus
a lot of practice, self-belief and
perseverance”.
Next step? Maybe his own TV
show? Nio has already made
a pilot and clearly believes that

arrow may be 5,000 miles away from
Brazil, but the difference for one
young athlete is just 16cm. That’s
the distance Harrow triple jumper Nathan
Fox says he needed to make up when he
set his sights on qualifying for this year’s
Olympic Games in Rio.
The British indoor champion is now
closer to realising his dream thanks to
sponsorship from Harrow Leisure Centre,
allowing him to focus fully on training. The
25-year-old regularly trains at the centre and
Vale Farm Sports Centre.
Nathan, who grew up in Harrow, said: “Having free
access to the Everyone Active centres is a huge help for
my training. I regularly use the strength gym to help with my
power.”
Nathan has also been preparing for the South American
climate at camps in South Africa and Florida. He said: “The
training environment definitely keeps you on your toes.
Training away from home is a great experience but I do start
to miss my friends and family after a while.”
Duncan Jefford, regional director at
Everyone Active, which runs Harrow
Leisure Centre in partnership with
Harrow Council, said: “Nathan is
a hugely promising and talented
young athlete and we are delighted
to be able to support him on his
journey to Rio”.
l Olympic selection takes place
on June 25 in Birmingham.
