Crime Story- Burglary
Headline: ‘Runaway Robber Named and Shamed’
Violent, vicious and vindictive Arran Cartwright arrested following a day time break in at a
newsagents in Salford. Police hunted for Cartwright after a disturbing video was uploaded to
the social network site Facebook of the 32 year old man filming himself running from the
scene of the crime laughing and using abusive language.
Serial thief Cartwright, who has 9 previous convictions, initially said he was not responsible
for the break in, and claimed that another person must have planted the video on to his
Facebook page in order to seek revenge. But he later admitted to the burglary in attempt to
cause criminal damage, and was jailed for a minimum of 6 years.
Shop owner, Ann Turner, 56, said afterwards “ I was knelt down behind the till point sorting
through a delivery of newspapers when I heard the shop door burst open and a male voice
shout “Get on the floor or I will kill you”. “I was terrified, I did as he said, nothing like this
has ever happened to me before”.
The burglary happened at a local newsagentin Salford at around 12:30 pm on Monday 6th
January 2014. Cartwright entered the premises armed with a gun. Panicked customers and
shop owner Ann followed his demands to get down on the floor and watched in fear as he
made his way towards the till. Cartwright emptied the till of £250 and left with 300 pounds
worth of cigarettes and alcohol. Before fleeing the scene, Cartwright made a shot at the
shop counter in a last attempt to scare the customers. It has been described that the
expression on his face was demonising and disturbing.
Jailing Cartwright, from Salford, Judge Philip Henry said that it was “a planned, professional
and determined attack.”

Headline: Library’s Future Secured By Locals
Salford’s longest standing library threatened with closure after recent Government cuts.
The Height Library, on King Street Irlamso’th Height, has been open continuously since 1947,
but faced closure next year as part of council budget savings. The popular local landmark
has been providing internet and drop in services over recent years in addition to its
traditional book lending activities, and has become a treasured hub for the local community.
When plans were announced to close the library, local residents and users were in uproar
and decided to take action in order to challenge the council decision. Locals, and regular
library users, lobbied local counsellors and organised a 3,000 signature petition against the
threatened closure announced by Salford council.
This week it was announced that as a result of their campaign, Salford council have decided
not only to keep the library open but to undertake a programme of renovation to the
building in order to secure its future.
A spokesman for the local residents group said “This is a great decision and a real victory for
people power”, while the Chairman of the Council’s Cultural Services Committee, Counsellor
Joe Martin said “The council acknowledged the strength of local opinion regarding the
decision and as a result have decided to change its mind with regard to the proposed
closure.”

Headline: Blake’s On The Ball
Young Mancunion boy tells us of his recent triumph that could change his life forever.
Local school boy Blake Anderson aged 14, who has been playing competitive football since
the age of 6 for local club Beachfield United was ecstatic after being called in by his team
coach for a surprise meeting on Monday.
Blake was told that Manchester United had been watching his progress over recent months
and were so impressed with his performances that they wanted to invite him to join the
club’s youth team and begin regular training with them at their Carrington complex.
Blake told us “I was gobsmacked when I heard the news, this is something boys my age can
only dream of, but my dream has actually come true. It’s even better because I’m not only
mad about football, but I’ve supported United since I was a boy. Maybe one day it
mightbemy turn to run out on the pitch at Old Trafford.”Blake is set to start training with
United in the close season, starting in July.
