Rafiki is an open source package that exposes a comprehensive set of Interledger APIs. It's intended to be run by wallet providers, allowing them to offer Interledger functionality to their users. Rafiki is made up of several components including an Interledger connector, a high-throughput accounting database, and an API which can be accessed directly by users to implement Interledger applications. Rafiki also allows for delegated access, offering OAuth-based flows to grant third-party applications access to Interledger functionality on a user's account. Applications are deployed across the edge, hybrid, and multi-cloud architectures. Traditional middleware such as MQ, ETL, ESB does not scale well enough or only processes data in batch instead of real-time. This presentation explores why Apache Kafka is the new black for integration projects, how Kafka fits into the discussion around cloud-native iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) solutions, and why event streaming is a new software category. This talk begins with a short recap of how we created systems over the past 20 years, up to the current idea of building systems, using a Microservices architecture. What is a Microservices architecture and how does it differ from a Service-Oriented Architecture? Should you use traditional REST APIs to integrate services with each eachother in a Microservices Architecture? Or is it better to use a more loosely-coupled protocol? Answers to these and many other questions are provided. The talk will show how a distributed log (event hub) can help to create a central, persistent history of events and what benefits we achieve from doing so. Apache Kafka is a perfect match for building such an asynchronous, loosely-coupled event-driven backbone. Events trigger processing logic, which can be implemented in a more traditional as well as in a stream processing fashion. The talk shows the difference between a request-driven and event-driven communication and answers when to use which. It highlights how a modern stream processing systems can be used to hold state both internally as well as in a database and how this state can be used to further increase independence of other services, the primary goal of a Microservices architecture.

But as these systems grow so does the number of services in them. And this brings many challenges when we want to introduce new functionality. For a simple feature, engineers may need to spend a lot of time designing the end to end flow, changing code in multiple services and setting up complex test scenarios. During this talk, we’ll explore how to evolve a microservice architecture to be easily extensible based on some lessons learned from running 5000 microservices in production. We’ll go over different architectural patterns and open source tools that we can use to make it easy for all engineers to understand, extend and be more and more productive in such big complex systems.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.
