  • Petersberg Phase II ProcessJointly supported by the Government of Germany and the World Bank"Petersberg Round Tables on Transboundary Waters," was launched in 1998 andhighlighted water as an opportunity for close regional cooperation from a globalperspective through a series of Round Tables.Phase II focuses on specific challenges, such as furthering transboundary /development and conservation programmes in smaller catchmentbasins of Southeastern Europe. Athens Declaration ProcessJointly supported by the Government of Greece and the World Bank • International Conference on “Sustainable Development for Lasting Peace: World Bank Shared Water, Shared Future, Shared Knowledge”, organized in May 2003, at Jointly supported by GEF Vouliagmeni / Athens, Greece IW:LEARN is supporting synergies • “Athens Declaration” concerning Shared Water, Shared Future and Shared GWP-Med technical / administrative support Knowledge: a long-term process to support cooperative activities for IWRM of shared water resources in the SEE and Mediterranean regions1/12

  • Concrete outcomes in two broad fields : a. Raising the capacity of key SEE stakeholders at regional, national and local levels regarding TWRM, promoting dialogue, enhancing networking and communication; b. Enhancing synergies among key regional processes and promoting action on the ground.Activities +a range of a Regional Dialogue on policy and technical issues regardinginformal TWRM assisting in bringing up the benefits stemming frombilateral and transboundary cooperation as well as from the involvementmultilateral of the stakeholders in the management of shared basins.interventionsformed : Overall, representatives of more than 150 stakeholder organizations, governments and other entities were engaged in activities, creating a wide and active human network valuable for the development of any form of cooperation at regional, national and local levels11/12
  • Main tangible results:• Towards on the ground cooperation in the Drin- Ministerial Declaration regarding the management of the Drin (Ohrid,April 2011)- Signing of a MoU, a “Strategic Shared Vision”, by the Ministers of theDrin Riparians for the management of the Drin including concreted stepstowards the preparation of an IWRM plan (UNECE, Swedish EPA) for themanagement of the basin- Establishment of the Drin Core Group (joint coordination body)• Towards structured Stakeholders Involvement in the Sava River Basin-Stakeholders Analysis and Public Participation Plan (on-going)- (possible) establishment of a Sava Partnership• Coordination of actors (Sweden, Switzerland, Slovenia, UNDP, UNESCO)on selected basins in the field of TWRM – Strategic Partnership withUNECE and GEF12/12
