Building Research Success by Building a Librarian Into Your Online Course: 5/30/2016, 10-11AM, Room 415A, 4th Floor (subject to change), ID: 91
You embed the best information sources in your online courses, but have you considered embedding a librarian? What words come to mind? What do your students picture?
Whether this is the first image or not, librarians are usually pictured with books, inside walls, associated with the physical building that is the library.
But librarians are not confined to that physical library building anymore. Just as you’ve found new ways to incorporate digital resources into your online courses, it is often possible to similarly incorporate a human library presence—in the form of an embedded librarian—to guide your online students through the research process. This presentation will go over how the College of Southern Nevada accomplished this, how you might implement a similar partnership at your institution, and the benefits of such a program.

Online courses and degrees hold many perceived benefits for community college students including flexible scheduling, no transportation or child care requirements for the students and 24/7 access to course materials and assignments. Provides opportunities for students with disabilities…
Brief mention of CSN size and population. Over 620,000 residents
In Fall 2015 CSN’s enrollment was 33,867 unduplicated individuals. Of this population, about 30% attended using Pell Grants which support low income students. We know that approximately 33% of our students are the first in their families to pursue education beyond high school which places them at risk of completing a college degree. Our online student population is CSN’s second largest campus out of four locations. In Fall of 2015, CSN offered 1,224 classes online, approximately 25% of all class sections taught.
The only population of the college with increased enrollment over the past two years. In a Fall 2014 survey by CSN’s Institutional Research regarding learning preferences, 61.23% felt it was Very Important for CSN students to have access to online and hybrid courses.
eLearning Librarian applied for grant to do a Needs Assessment of our online students, online faculty, and local online high school students

CSN Official Instructor/Course Evaluations at the end of the semester
The teacher is very helpful and she requires you to use an online librarian
Librarian could become a part of your department meetings and help develop the library’s collection in those subject areas. Can also assist faculty with other projects and facilitate communication between the library and other departments across your institution.
Find out if your library can work with your course in other ways.
-Is your course online, hybrid, or heavily utilizes your LMS?
-Do you assign a research paper/project?
-Does the research require sources outside of required readings?
-Is writing or spoken debate emphasized in this course?
-Is increasing students’ information literacy skills a goal?
-Have you spoken to a librarian about possible options?
-See if your library can realistically handle the program or already has one started. Does your college have an eLearning or DE librarian?
-Set up a meeting to establish shared goals and outcomes
-Set deadlines with enough time for library involvement
-Communicate to students that library collaboration is not optional
