This document summarizes a workshop on getting to know care-experienced learners. It provides instructions for participating in a poll using Poll Everywhere. It then introduces a care-experienced student who discusses her background and pathway to college. Statistics on care-experienced students at various institutions are presented. Small group activities have participants discuss how to gather more information from students and what barriers exist to asking more questions. The workshop aims to help educators understand care-experienced students and better support them.

18. Curiosity: Macro and Micro levels
• Universities and colleges should be working together to develop ways to capture more
information about who their care-experienced population is, where they are coming from.
Thiswould allow us to:
• Measure progress on student recruitment
• Target outreach and other support to reach those groups who are still under-represented.
• In individual conversations, askinga bit more about type of care experience might be one
way to open up more meaningful conversations – enable you to support students more
effectively.

20. Group Discussion
• In small groups, discuss curiosityin educational
settings. You might cover:
• How much do you ask students about
their personal lives or circumstances in
your currentpractice?
• Could you bemorecurious?
• What would feel like a barrierto this?
• How might you overcome these
barriers?

24. Learning Outcomes Revisited
• Understanding of the range and complexity of approaches to student support across
different institutions.
• Discussion of how to overcome institutionalbarriers that prevent staff askingquestions.
• Awareness of what care-experienced students consider best practice.
• Reflection on how to apply this to your own work.
