  and help you access funds such as the Student
  Enterprise Fund and the SPEED(WM)

Background & Objectives

• ½ way through a longitudinal study to measure impact

• Aiming to understand Ent. Intent prior to exposure to CU/IAE

• Aiming to measure impact of CU/IAE

• Improve our understanding of the needs of our students

• Building on Enterprise UK study's and expansion of FE Enterprise
  initiatives
Methodology

• Focus on high return rate / representative sample size

• Stage 1 involves all students responding to 6 key questions
  during their induction

• Very short data collection window = quick tool required

• Total sample size is c. 4,000 students / year
Methodology
Questions
1. Have you ever run your own business or been self employed?

2. Do you currently run your own business or are you self-employed?

3. Would you like to start your own business one day?

4. Do you have a business idea that you would like some help
   developing?

5. Do you have a business idea that you would like some help funding?

6. Would you like to develop your entrepreneurial skills to improve your
   employability?




Terminology and range of Q’s developed with input form students
Results
• 3 Years of entry data now collected:

   – 2010/11 = 1,680 usable responses

   – 2011/12 = 2,163 usable responses

   – 2012/13 = 1,868 usable responses


• Assuming a 3 year (UG) pathway, 5,711 students of 14,620 =
  ~40% response rate.

Q3 – Would you like to start your own business
                                     one day?
Q4 – Do you have a business idea that you
        would like some help developing?
Q5 – Do you have a business idea that you

Q6 – Would you like to develop your entrepreneurial
              skills to improve your employability?
Implications & Value

• Provides us with a greater understanding of our students
  Ent Intent
• Allows us to tailor support for demand

• Allows for justification and support of our business plan

• Direct marketing opportunities for support

• Data is currency in internal politics
What next?

• v2 of the survey includes faculty details for added break down

• Gender study is possible within our data

• Exit data needed for stage 2 of this study to measure the impact of
  CU / IAE
• Appeal to partner HEI’s to collaborate on study for deeper
  understanding

  • 3. What is IAE? • The IAE provide a range of support to student entrepreneurs and local businesses. • The IAE can offer you mentoring, resources and help you access funds such as the Student Enterprise Fund and the SPEED(WM) Programme www.coventry.ac.uk/iae 02476 15 2029
  • 4. Background & Objectives • ½ way through a longitudinal study to measure impact • Aiming to understand Ent. Intent prior to exposure to CU/IAE • Aiming to measure impact of CU/IAE • Improve our understanding of the needs of our students • Building on Enterprise UK study's and expansion of FE Enterprise initiatives
  • 5. Methodology • Focus on high return rate / representative sample size • Stage 1 involves all students responding to 6 key questions during their induction • Very short data collection window = quick tool required • Total sample size is c. 4,000 students / year
  • 7. Questions 1. Have you ever run your own business or been self employed? 2. Do you currently run your own business or are you self-employed? 3. Would you like to start your own business one day? 4. Do you have a business idea that you would like some help developing? 5. Do you have a business idea that you would like some help funding? 6. Would you like to develop your entrepreneurial skills to improve your employability? Terminology and range of Q’s developed with input form students
  • 8. Results • 3 Years of entry data now collected: – 2010/11 = 1,680 usable responses – 2011/12 = 2,163 usable responses – 2012/13 = 1,868 usable responses • Assuming a 3 year (UG) pathway, 5,711 students of 14,620 = ~40% response rate.

  • 15. Implications & Value • Provides us with a greater understanding of our students Ent Intent • Allows us to tailor support for demand • Allows for justification and support of our business plan • Direct marketing opportunities for support • Data is currency in internal politics
  • 16. What next? • v2 of the survey includes faculty details for added break down • Gender study is possible within our data • Exit data needed for stage 2 of this study to measure the impact of CU / IAE • Appeal to partner HEI’s to collaborate on study for deeper understanding
