Matthew Caldwell, Graduate Assistant, Admissions Development, Crummer Graduate School of Business, Rollins College
This workshop will explain many of the ways in which service and the work students do in the Bonner Program not only translate but are needed in the world of business. This session will also include tips on how to succeed professionally with the power of service.
2. Businesses Can Change the World
The power of spreading awareness and using previously established Ethos
Businesses can dramatically change public policy and use their size and
stamina to influence political leaders and communities
Businesses are impacted by community issues and are major stakeholders
in the social justice fights
Example: Partial Proceeds events at Chipotle
1+1=11
3. The Law of Large Numbers
In 2012 McDonalds sold 75
hamburgers per second
270,000 during this presentation
Think about the positive impact
that could be had on the world if
each of those burgers came with
an encouraging note
4. Businesses Defy Property Lines
All social justice causes can be advanced
through the power of influential leadership
Bonner doesn’t just impact the lives of
people directly involved but, involves and
positively impacts ALL on college campuses
through the power of YOU!
5. Graduation may be the end of classes, but it is not the end of
service!
Your community needs you more than ever, your causes
need graduate level experts leading the cause of change
Use your talents to do even more than before. Pro-Bono
Work applies to so much more than just law!
6. Service is Multifaceted in Business
A business cannot perform with providing a service,
Employers must provide services to their employees
Business is made up of stakeholders not STOCKHOLDERS:
A business is not successful because of finance, it is
successful because of PEOPLE
Businesses are continually innovating to become better
providers of service
Knowledge and understanding of service will only
increase your success
8. Identifying Business Values
Mission Statement and Vision
Target
Mission: “To make Target the preferred shopping
destination for our guests by delivering outstanding value,
continuous innovation and an exceptional guest
experience by consistently fulfilling our Expect More. Pay
Less. Brand Promise.”
Vision: “Guided commitments to great value, the
community, diversity, and the environment.”
9. All Businesses Provide a Service
Businesses do make money, but they do so by providing a service, even if that
service is a product. If a business didn’t provide some type of service they
wouldn’t be in business
Airlines: Get you from A to B
Grocery stores: Sell food
UPS and FedEx: Deliver packages
All companies serve and are served by people
10. Giving Back helps Employees
Succeed and Companies Recruit
Great Talent
Companies that give back
increase employee productivity
and empowerment

fairness, impartiality, and equity in
addressing systemic social and
environmental issues
Businesses have the power to
change the world
Social Justice impacts both on and
off company property
12. Bonner Values
are Needed in
Business
Corporate Social Responsibility is
important, but companies must do
more than just a few days a
year…Companies should be actively
fighting for social justice every day
Corporate policies shape our society
and have major influence, think of the
domino impact magnified
13. Serve those at your own
level
BE THERE FOR THAT COWORKER THAT NEEDS IT, WHEN THEY
NEED IT!
14. Giving Back as an intern or entry level

Why will someone listen to me?
21. How can I find a
Business that
aligns with my
service values?
Speak
candidly in
your
interview
Research Reach out
directly to
businesses
22. Bonner + MBA = Social
Change
You will be more equipped to
enter the business world and
make change
Adding an MBA will empower you
to make large scale decisions
quickly within organization and
YOU can be the person to start
the impact
23. Leadership + MBA
Research the leadership component of the program in
addition to the academic
Ask questions about specific leadership events and projects
Reach out to student leadership within graduate schools and
ask to hear stories or to connect with real students
24. Power, Pressure and Responsibility
The higher you climb on the corporate ladder, the greater
your responsibility
Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing donated his $3million bonus in 2012 to
10,000 of the company’s lowest level employees
25. Review Business, service and leadership are all
closely related. When leveraged
effectively, all lead to both internal and
external success for organizations and
individuals.

If graduate school is for you, identify a program that allows you to continue to
increase your leadership skills!
As you enter the workforce, select a company that shares your values of service and
continue to serve!

your influence and impact on your organization and community!
