COMPUTER ANIMATION
WHAT IS ANIMATION?
• Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of 2D or 3D
artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of
motion or life
• It’s an optical illusion of motion due to persistence of vision
• Name derived from “Anime” that means life
ROOTS
As early as the 1940s and 50s, experiments in computer
graphics were beginning, most notably by John Whitney—
but it was only by the early 1960s when digital computers
had become widely established, that new avenues for
innovative computer graphics blossomed.
John Whitney
IMAGE GENERATION
• All characters and movements are
generated using computer
animation software
• Can also be very time consuming
as they get very complicated in
movements and effects
• All characters are fully animated
with no still pictures
EFFECTS
• Since computer animation was invented, people use
computers instead of sketch pads to animate movies.
• Many of the technologies we use today revolve around
computer animation, including TV, video games, phones,
computers, and movies.
• Computer animation has improved the way things are
animated and has cut the time it takes to make movies by
a lot time.
GREATEST IMPACT ON SOCIETY?
• Animation is NOT just for kids
• It has become mainstream for kids, teenagers,
adults and seniors.
• Now adults take their kids to the movies and
watch with them and there are often “inside
jokes” for adults too.
APPlications
• Video games
• Music videos
• TV Programs (e.g. Weather, News)
• Simulation (Science & Engineering)
• Virtual reality
• Special effects(Movies, TV)
• Training, Military
• Robotics

TECHNIQUES
• 2D Animation
• 3D Animation
• Character animation
• Chuckimation
• Multi-sketching
• Special effects animation
• Animatronics
• Stop motion
Mainly this 2 types of techniques
used
I. 2D animation
II. 3D animation
2D ANIMATION
• 2D animation figures are created and edited on the
computer using 2D bitmap graphics or created and edited
using 2D Vector graphics.
• This technique tends to focus on image manipulation and
the usage of traditional methods such as tweening , onion
skinning , rotoscoping etc.
3D ANIMATION
• It is digitally modeled and manipulated by an animator
• Other techniques can be applied such as mathematical
functions , fur or hair, fire/water effect and the use of
Motion Capture
• Many 3D animations create images (actions too) that
seem very realistic and are commonly used as Visual
Effects for recent movies
• Usually build virtual worlds characters and objects
move and interact.
ANIMATRONICS
Animatronics is the use of mechatronics to create
machines which seem animate rather than robotic.
Animatronic creations include animals (including
dinosaurs), plants and even mythical creatures. A robot
designed to be convincing imitation of a human is
specifically known as an android. Animatronics is mainly
used in movie making.
Animation terms: FRAME RATE
• Frame rate is the measurement of the frequency (rate) at which an
imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames.
• Brain can recognize images as separate images if they are viewed at 12
or fewer images per second.
• Frame rate for animation, movie or video is 24-30 fps
• If we used less fps, animation produces would stuck human eyes from
one image to another image. Thus, for better smooth transition we
must have higher frame rate.
MORPHING
• Transformation of object shape from one form to
another is called Morphing (Metamorphosis)
• Three frames form a morph from George W.Bush
into Barack Obama
Animation terms: TWEENING
• The relationship between keyframe and tweening?
• “Tween ” is actually short for “in-between”, and
refers to the creation of successive frames of
animation between key frames.
Animation terms: TWEENING
• The process of generating intermediate frames between two
images to give the appearance that the first image evolves
smoothly into the second image.
Animation terms: ONION SKINNING
Onion skinning is a term for a technique used
in creating animated cartoons and editing
movies to see several frames at once.
Animation terms: ONION SKINNING
• This way, the animator can take decisions on
how to create or change an image based on
the previous image in this sequence.
SoftwareS
• FlipBook (DigiCel)
• Flash (Adobe)
• Blender (The Blender
Foundation)
• Poser (Smith Micro Software)
• 3ds Max (Autodesk)
• Maya (Autodesk)
• Cinema 4D (Maxon)
• Houdini
• Messiah
• Adobe Photoshop
• iClone
MAYA
• The most popular 3D
animation software, and
by far the most
powerful available, is
MAYA.
• Used for special effects
as well as animation,
MAYA is the software
most in demand in
Hollywood.
