Answer: There were two opinions about Thomasin’s marriage. In the opinion of one of the members of the
crowd, a pretty girl like Thomasin was a fool to desire to marry a man like Wildeve, but in the opinion of
another, a hundred maidens would agree to marry that man.
3. Describe the character of Wildeve.
Answer: Wildeve, a good looking, clever and learned fellow, who was brought up to do better things than
running the Quiet Woman inn. He was a kind of engineer before he adopted his present profession.
4. Who is Eustacia Vye?
Answer: Eustacia is the granddaughter of Captain Vye. She is an attractive girl who wears showy gowns. She
was very strange in her ways, and kept aloof from people.
5. What do you know about Mrs. Yeobright?
Answer: Mrs. Yeobright was a woman of middle age, with well-formed features of the type usually found
where intelligence is the chief quality crowned within. Although her husband had been a small farmer, she
herself was a curate's daughter. She was a matron who carried a certain atmosphere with her and who brought
her own tone into a company. Her normal manner among the rustic folk was somewhat restrained, the result of
her consciousness of a superior communicative power.
6. Why did the crowd on the barrow decide to go to the inn?
Answer: The crowd decided to go to the inn to sing a song to congratulate Wildeve on his marriage which was
believed to have taken place.
