As soon as the production
companies appear, the
voice over starts. Its clear
from the production
company “USA film” and
the accent of the man on
the voice over that this an
American film. This
insinuates that it is likely
to be a gritty crime film
set in a suburban are.
The Cannes award shows
that the film was well
received and the
audiences expectations of
the film will be high.
3. The main setting is shown in the
exposition and it shows that the
main protagonist is a barber.
Through the voice over of the
description of the different cuts, the
audience gets the idea that the
protagonist is an experienced
barber. It also shows the passing of
time.
4. This is the point at which the audience know the
voice over is of the man they are seeing in this
medium shot. Its shown because the sound they're
hearing is matching what they're seeing; A man
looking thoughtful. The audience feel like they're
gaining insight into his mind. The quote “I don't
talk much, I just cut the hair” implies that the
protagonist may be aware of criminal activity or
hears a lot of private information about a lot of
people. It portrays him as an innocent character
who would be likeable to the audience.

5. Through out the trailer, the font use
is the same. The layout is also the
same with the bottom line of text
being larger than the text above it.

with them appearing on the screen.

6. The idea of criminal activity is further enforced
through the mise-en-scene and the second use of
voice over. The voice over sounds like some sort
of court interrogation between a lawyer and a
suspect.

Did anyone else know
about it? Probably not
you don’t know.”
7. Transitions
Transitions are
frequently used
in the trailer.
Many clips fade
into the next one
suggesting that
they’re related in
some fashion
although the
audience may not
fully understand.
For example the
hands above
could be the
hands of the
murderer.
8. The Rising Action

Leading up to and during the
climax, the non-diegetic music
