1. Mariah Carey
Mariah Carey is 43 years old, female artist who was born in America
but has a mix of Irish, African and Venezuelan in her. In 1990 Mariah
was signed to a major record label, Universal music group. From the
start of Mariah’s career she idolized Marilyn Monroe. This is very
much seen in the way she acts and dresses. She wears a lot of make-
up and dress in bright, high fashion clothing. Her clothing reveals a
lot of her body.
2. We Belong Together
We Belong Together is from Mariah Carey’s tenth album, The Emancipation of Mimi. The
content of this song is a love song. Watching the music video you gain to learn a lot about
an artist, by the way they look and dress and the idea that is put into the music video.
There were quite a few editing techniques used in this music video. Straight cuts were used
to show different scenes. At the beginning of the music video merging shots and fades. A
shot is used relating to the lyrics “I can’t sleep at night, when you are on my mind.” where it
is in black and white showing a memory from a previous music video. This shows that the
songs on the album if you have seen all the music videos is linked.

The locations used in the music video is mansion, this already represents the wealth that
the artists is in. The artist is seen in rooms within the mansion such as the bedroom,
corridor and bathroom shower. The Lighting in the video is very bright especially on the
artists face. The artist wears quite revealing clothes which show off a lot of her body, this
makes her seem more sexy along with wearing a lot of make-up which makes her look
glamorous. There are a lot of shots used which are mainly for the artists face and body,
close-ups and extreme close-ups on the artists face. Wide shots showing what the artist is
wearing and her figure. The main characters that are in the video are both well known
actors, the young male being ‘Wentworth Miller’ from a popular TV show called Prison
Break. The older male being Oscar winner ‘Eric Roberts ‘ from. This shows that there has
been a lot of money put into this music video.
This music video is professional and very high standard, which shows that the artist wants
her video to be high quality. The video is almost as though it is a movie, which is interesting
because this video is directed by film director Brett Ratner. Ratner is famous for directing
films such as Rush Hour 1,2&3, X-Men: Last Stand, Tower Heist and many more. This
suggests that this music video is important.
3. Adele
Adele is a 24 year old female artist who was born in the UK. In 2006 she was signed to an
independent record label XL Recordings. Adele has always idolized Elle Fitzgerald. Her image
is simple she has big hair and wears dark colours which is suitable.
4. Someone Like You
Someone Like You is from Adele’s second album 21. The content of
this song is a love song. This music video enhances the artists
personality. Throughout the video until 3:50 minutes there is no
editing used. Although towards the end of the video you being to see
straight cuts which takes you from one scene to another. Merging of
two shots are used of the artists eyes and the shot of London.
There were only two locations used in this video which was central
London, which tells you more about where the artist is from and a
shop. The lighting is quite dim in this music video and continues to
get darker in parts towards the end. Costume was casual nothing
glamorous just ordinary clothing that would be worn when you would
leave your home. This shows that this artist is not looking for a surreal
type of video, but natural. There was only one other person which is
in this music video which is male, although you do not see his
face, it’s as though he is just a figure. This music video has been set in
black and white, this really enhances the mood of the song and it’s
lyrics. The camera shots used were close-ups and extreme close-ups
to show the expression on the artists face whilst she’s singing.
Tracking is also used as the artist is walking so the camera is following
her.
Adele’s star development was gained by her vocals and the way that
the songs were written.
