3. • Mannose is obtained from softwood by acid
hydrolysis, and use in food products and chemicals
• Mannose production compete with glucose, but
glucose is available from lignocellulose
• Mannose is a source of Mannitol, which is used in
sweetening agents, carrier for medicine, resins
plasticizers, emulsifiers
• Production of arabitol from sugar beet pulp via
reduction of arabinose
• Mannose also act as hexose supplier for fermentation
to ethanol or yeast products
• Mannose hydrogenation to the sugar alcohol Mannitol
and further catalytic hydrogenation to glycols and
polyglycols for polymer synthesis e.g. polyurethane
