2. Preference feedback
For this feedback I simply showed a series of photographs which I was considering to use for my my
advert I then recorded this in a form of a tally. I asked 20 people to chose the one
they liked best.
||| (3)
||||| (5)
|||||||||| (10)
|| (2)
Half of the people I asked; 10 out of 20 of them went for
picture number 3 and a quarter went for picture number
2. This gave me a strong indication which one my
audience and other people preferred therefore gave me
a choice to either go with this feedback and pick the
photo that the majority went for or to go against this and
choose another photo to use. However I stuck with the
photo that everyone else had chose as I personally
prefer this to the rest of them.
I have found/learnt that doing this type of feedback is
good because it allows me to see what my audience like
so I can pick accordingly. When making a product it is
very important you get an idea of your target audience
because ultimately they are the ones buying the product
3. However there are also limitations of using this particular form of feedback because it doesn’t give you very much
information. It is quantitate data which means you’re only getting a number; in this case the number represents how
many people like the particular advert but that’s all it tells you it doesn’t tell you why they like it compared to the
others it doesn’t tell you that they don’t really like it but it was the best out of the others it simply tells you which one
is the most popular. So in order to overcome this I asked the same group of people why they went for the image
they did.
Here are some of the results I got:
Picture number 1:
I chose picture number one because…
The sun coming through the trees looks nice
The effect the sun has on the hair
Picture number 2:
I chose picture number 2 because…
The Setting
The photos of the family on the piano
positioning
4. Picture number 3:
I chose picture number 3 because…
Image is well taken
The formal qualities: tones and colours, positioning
Natural looking
Links to music video
Picture number 4:
I chose picture number 4 because…
Not typical/unique
Links to genre and style of artist
Good image
Bike is in music video
5. From turning my quantitate data into qualitative data I have learnt that It is best to find out more
Information when it comes to feedback as it is best to have more information that you need because you
Can work around the feedback to see why people like particular things so that you can develop your
Ideas around it. For this particular feedback I have learnt that just gathering quantitate data Is not best
Because it could be that the audience don’t really like the images but are having to chose one of them
Therefore all I know is the one with the most votes in the most popular. Finding out more about why the
People I had asked liked the image they chose was more beneficial to me and I could see the reasons people
Liked it. However to make this feedback even more beneficial I could have asked them if there was anything they
disliked about the images they had chosen so that I could either take the images again with their
Criticism is mind or edit them in a way which would look a lot better and please my audience more.
The final image I chose to
yours after gaining the
feedback
6. Hot desk: class feedback
For this feedback in our class we put our music video on our computers and moved around the class looking
at other peoples work and giving them some feedback. This was done on a word document with a couple of
heading for them to consider such as what do you like about my music video, what do you think needs
improving, what do you think about the editing as well as a box where they could write extra comments if
they wish.
This is some of the feedback I received:
What do you like about my music video?
The black and white
The visuals linking to the lyrics
The beginning(turning the camera on)
What do you think needs improving?
It jumps at times so this needs to be edited so that it doesn’t
Some parts are too long
Some parts are too dark
Could add lip syncing
Add more editing techniques
7. What do you think about the editing?
Not enough editing techniques: could add some pull shots or dissolves to resolve the jumps
Speed some of the footage up to make it shorter
some of the piano is out of time with the music
Editing has been done well
Good order
Any more comments to add?
Maybe add some more shots so you have more footage and make other parts shorter and quicker
From doing this feedback I have learnt a lot about my product such as my music video, it has enabled me to see
which things needed improving which I didn’t necessary see before or didn’t think other people would notice. It has
also gave me ideas that I wouldn’t have thought about doing and has showed me things people expect to see in a
music video such as the lip syncing. This type of feedback is much better than the tally feedback as it has gave me
a lot more information for me to take on board whether that is good feedback about what people liked or whether is
bad feedback about what people thought needed improving. I also think that this type of feedback is good because
it is anonymous so that means I wont know who wrote the comment therefore they can be completely honest
without me knowing who is was this is good because some people feel bad for criticising peoples work or will just
say its good whereas with this they can write anything and give positive criticism without feeling bad for it.
8. Focus group:
For this feedback I gathered some people from college that fitted into my target audience of females
aged 18-25. I then showed them all three of my products for them to get feedback on.
9. I recorded some of this feedback by video so that I could ask questions, and record their answers to then listen back
to and analyse and write down what they said
Here is some of the feedback I got:
It clear who it is and where its coming from.
I like the bit where the artist is spinning around and it kind of matches the lyrics of the
song.
On the advert where you have all the places you can buy it from and the twitter and
Facebook (common convention)
It looks very similar to Birdys music videos
The bit right at the start when she hits down on the piano is slightly out
The bedroom scenes the camera is a bit shakey
On the digipak I like the light the way it looks like you’ve reversed it so that the sun is
hitting the other side.
10. From using a focus group to gather feedback I feel I have learnt that it is a good idea to record people
answers to your questions because it means you can listen to what they are saying and have a conversation
to get more information out of your target audience similar to an interview you can prompt the person and
help them out if they are struggling to think of something an example of this happening in my focus group was
when I asked if they thought my music video looks like anyone elses they have seen on YouTube or music
channels and one of the people in my focus group couldn’t think of an artists name so I helped her if this was
written feedback she probably would have said no or missed the question out. I have also learnt that it is
good to get feedback from the people you are aiming your product as because they are the ones you’re trying
to sell your product to so if they offer improvements then it is important to pay attention to them as they could
determine whether they buy the product or not. However the way I conducted the focus group could have
been a lot more effective if I had planned better and had a structured set of questions to ask my target
audience this would have saved me time trying to think of questions on the spot. Also it would have been
much better if the sample was larger as then I could have had more feedback from a variety of people. I
found that in my focus group there was only one main person who spoke therefore I was not getting much
feedback off those who didn’t speak as much this was a negative towards a focus group as I means that shy
people are less likely to voice their opinion to a group of people so they will say very little if anything at all
which means their valid feedback is not aware to the person asking questions and needing to make
appropriate improvements. In order to over come this I could have gathered small groups of people that knew
each other well so they felt more comfortable speaking. Or by making it a voluntary sample so the people
who are involved have chose to be involved this could be done by advertising that females aged 18-25 who
listen to indie/instrumental/popular music are needed for feedback on a music video. Or finally another way
of doing is also giving the participants a sheet of paper with similar questions on for them to fill in
anonymously.
