The preliminary task gave the author experience using different software like InDesign and Photoshop. It allowed them to practice layout techniques for a magazine, including mastheads, columns, images, text, coverlines and captions. This helped the author become familiar with typical magazine formatting. The preliminary task also helped the author learn how to edit and warp text in InDesign to achieve their desired design for the final music magazine. Having not used Photoshop before, the preliminary task provided an opportunity to test out its functions and tools.

2. Effectiveness of preliminary task
- I feel as though the preliminary task gave me a great opportunity to actually try out the different
software's and improve my technique, application and editing.
- In the preliminary task I was able to get used to the different, typical aspects of a magazine -
such as: mastheads, use of columns, images, text, coverlines and photo captions.
- The preliminary task also allowed me to get used to InDesign, which I used to create my final
music magazine also. For example: I learnt how to edit and warp my text, to fit the design I was
looking to achieve in the end.
- As I had not used it before, I felt as though
the preliminary task gave me a good
opportunity to test out Photoshop properly.
Having not used it before, I was able to test out
each of the different functions and learn how
to use the different tools effectively.
